'Offensive' Tui billboard takes a hasty flight

Why doesn't somebody start a thread about birdsong? I've got a great tui anecdote.

Okay: So the simple souls who dwell in the Dream of Maui (may they never awaken!) exclaim "Yeah, right!" without feeling or sounding fed up. So the connection between the pious sentiment and the ad-biz tag is adventitious at most. Hey, if it sells beer, it works.

I doubt that sign would backfire even up here in Puritan country; plenny too muss 'Melicans have had it with the Chrrrristianz and their spoilsport ways. If they can't take a joke, fokker 'em.

No worries. My shout. Tuis all round?

Uh mate? You do realize that Maui is in Hawaii and not New Zealand right? A looong way from New Zealand even.

Perhaps you are confusing Maui with Maori? However one is an island and the other a people.

Maui is a Polynesian hero-god of trans-Pacific provenance. He turns up every bleedin' where. When it comes to NZ, I wish he'd just stayed home, him and Tasman and Cook. I wish that archepelago had only been discovered a month ago. By me. I'd keep it a deep, deep secret.

How do they brew Tui? Is it top-fermented?

Maui is also a Maori god as well as a place in Hawaii. The god-figure Maui actually caught a giant fish which turned out to be the North Island, while the South Island is his canoe.

To prove the Maui story's correctness, here is a picture of the fishhook still in the NI:

He's just jealous. It's winter in Detroit, and in NZ they are drinking ice-cold beer in the warm sun. :D

Is the beer any good ?
That's a question only an extended comparative taste-test can answer.

;)

PS. I liked it well enough when I was there a few weeks ago. Considerably better than some of the rather ordinary stuff available.

Maui in Hawai'i is very similar to the Maui in Maori myth, however here he is a demi-god (human birth). He is locally credited with fishing up the islands, slowing down the sun to create the current length of day, and bringing fire to the people (previously only known to mudhens, don't ask me why).

Maui the island may or may not be named for Maui the demi-god. It is still up for debate.

Typical mass-produced rubbish.

NZ makes some lovely beers, but none of them are produced in giant breweries for the swilling market as Tui and other "name" brands are.

A nothing beer.
Yeah.. Spending a lot of money on advertising, is usually a good tip off, that the quality of the product itself is probably somewhat lacking.

Close...

Many of us are perhaps thinking beer, but not ice-cold... that's an Aussie thing that mitigates the risk of actually tasting stuff like Resch's and XXXX

And the days ain't consistently warm... yet...

Yes, Maori and Hawaiians share lots of things. As do most Polynesians. The mythical Maori homeland was "Hawaiiki" which isn't all that different from your place.

That and packing it out at 50,000 litres a day.

Only if you live in:

Te Tau Ihu o te Waka o Maui

Those of us a bit further north on te ika a Maui are sweltering. Hottest early summer ever, I believe.

All Polynesian mythologies are essentially the same, with minor local variations.

Maui (or alternatively, Māui) appears in Maori mythology, Hawaiian mythology, Mangarevan mythology, Tahitian mythology, and Tongan mythology, where he is consistently credited with:

Fishing up the relevant islands
Slowing the sun's passage through the sky
Bringing fire to mankind

In Samoan mythology there is instead a Ti'iti'i who only seems to be credited with stealing fire.

The island of Maui in the Hawaiian Archipelago was named, according to folklore, after the son of the man who discovered the islands. The son was, in turn, named after Māui.

I believe it is called 'pale ale' but wikipedia says it is a larger. Not sure how that works.

What do you recommend? I like just about anything from Speights and we are working through a case of Monteith's Original that my father in law won, it's pretty good.

What, they don't even have a coopers type name brand?

For those who don't know, Coopers is a large South Australian brewer that makes traditional English style ale, complete with in-bottle carbonation, not the forced-gas style carbonation of the major swilling brands.

Drink Speights and lose your mates! :p

Nope. The market for beer here has never been big and its getting smaller, due in part to fashion, a growing wine industry and an increased awareness that healthy living does not include drinking 5 litres of gnats piss in a cavernous barn with a supermarket-sized car park outside

Although the number of superb 'boutique breweries' is steadily growing, one of the prerequisites for superbiosity seems to be non-great-big-enormormousness... although the Goliaths seem to disagree as they - like Google and Microsoft et al - are in the habit of buying out the rising stars

Last Friday I went to a mini beer-fest where there at least two dozen* local(ish) brews were on tap...

*For some peculiar reason, I can't remember exactly how many ;)

Yes, their stuff is good. Mac's is another one which makes some good, dark brews.

What, they don't even have a coopers type name brand?

Not that I know of.

Must track down a bottle of it.

Fixed that for you :)

Last drop to flow from famous brewery
By SIMON BLOOMBERG - The Nelson Mail | Saturday, 17 May 2008

The birthplace of craft beer brewing in New Zealand, Mac's Brewery in Stoke, is closing at the end of this month.

Production will be transferred to parent company Lion Nathan's plants in Christchurch and Wellington.

Terry McCashin opened the brewery in 1981, when the New Zealand beer industry was dominated by brewing giants DB and Lion. Mac's Brewery sparked a craft brewing revolution, and continued to make innovative beers after being sold to Lion Nathan in 1999.

Lion Nathan corporate affairs director Liz Read said on Thursday the Main Rd Stoke brewery was closing because it was too small to keep up with the demand for Mac's beers.
