Lt Sulu is Getting Married

One has to, when dealing with real-life scenarios.

So where do you draw the line? How much would gay marrage have to cost before you considered it unfeasible? Of couse due to spending on weddings there are some economic advantages but it is questionable if they offset inheritance tax issues.

Oops, I kinda feel stupid now. I'm a Star Trek fan since like forever, and I didn't even know that Takei was gay. Anyway, good that they can do what they want and marry now!

Nowhere. No line. Every couple who meets certain non-arbitrary and principled criteria should have the equal right to be married, no matter how much more expensive it would be than the current discriminatory regime.

If it costs "too much" to allow everyone equal marriage rights, then there are a number of things that can be done instead of having unequal marriage rights. E.g.:

* Take away certain marriage rights from all married couples.
* Make up the revenue by raising taxes somewhere else.
* Make up the revenue by reducing spending somewhere else.

We have no idea how much revenue will be lost. But here's the upper bound: among all homosexual couples who would have been married at the time the first member of the couple died if it were legal, look at all the wealth subject to estate tax passed at those people's deaths, and calculate the estate tax paid by those people.

It's actually a very easy number to calculate for California. California has no estate tax. Are you now ready to celebrate Takei's upcoming gay marriage?

I've been following Star Trek since the rerun boom of the 70's, and I don't recall ever hearing anything like this, or even speculation on it (except maybe for the Sulu/Chekov jokes).

Whatever an actor's personal life is or isn't, it's not the character he or she portrays... unless their stature is such that they have morphed the character into their lives, as John Wayne managed to do.
Whatever Takei is off-screen, I could care even less than what his character was on-screen.
I find fan worship of any media star to be demeaning to the fan who apparently has no life, apparently unable to comprehend the screen character is merely the invention of the script writer(s).

I've seen no better example of that than with Wil Wheaton. Reading his blog has been very enlightening. There certainly was a lot of hatred directed at him for his character, I agree one of the worst written I've ever seen. Unfortunately, some fans can't make that distinction between the character and the person.

You know, this just dawned on me: Geni, you've been milking the wrong cow. If I understand you correctly, you say you're against gay marriage because some gays or lesbians are poor, or at least less wealthy than many heterosexual couples. You say this means that they shouldn't be allowed to marry.

But... if the problem is that they're low-income, why not just say that those of low income can't marry? If you think it's a bad thing for two women below the poverty limit to be allowed to marry due to financial losses... why is it OK for two whites with an equal annual income to marry, even though they have the same economical effect? Why target only gays, or blacks, or Mexican immigrants, or refugees, or any other group known for their lower-than-average income?

If your problem is really that low-income couples will end up marrying... you should work to revoke the marriage privilege of low-income couples.
