North Carolina's Camp Lickalotta

I hope this is not too risque for this subforum...

Two unabashed environmentalist-Christians-lesbians have been shopping around a summer camp for adults idea in North Carolina. The concept is to create a friendly environment for all types of people: straight, gay, bi-sexual, lesbian or transgender. The name they insist be used for the camp: Camp Lickalotta.

Why that name?
Leedy said the name was chosen for three reasons. She said the goal of the camp is to: Lickalotta prejudice. Lickalotta pollutants. Lickalotta pessimism.

On the calendar last weekend was "Bushstock 08"

They had plans to open this Spring in Rutherford County, sharing space at an existing campground while they hunted for their own facilities. But, they and the campground owners received enough threatening calls and e-mails that they recently backed off that plan. Camp Lickalotta has a new home as of a few weeks ago in Northern Georgia, but they still say their plans are for a permanent home in Western NC.

OK, on the surface I find most of this hilarious. Lickalotta? Bushstock? Its like a Cinemax movie plot. But, there are some underlying issues that might be interesting to explore. Such as, why do people get so worked up about LGBTs that they feel they need to threaten and vandalize and scare them back into the closet? Also, why would any sane LGBT expect to publicize with no public backlash (deep in the bible belt no less) an alternate-lifestyle camp with a name that even children could associate with sex? The stupidity on both sides is amazing.

So, what do you think? Would "Camp Lickalotta" make it in your neck of the woods, or would they be run out of town as happened in Western NC?
 
While I wish you were correct, I must sadly inform you that you are not. French Lick is a fairly conservative town in fairly conservative Indiana. So conservative that they opened a casino nearly two years ago...

Them durn lesb'ns wouldn't get so much run out of town as pestered with a mob of real men who'd re-larn 'em to be straight.

Not a problem here in this part of NC. We have a huge gay population. The mayor of a small town nearby is gay. They should have held the camp near Asheville in Buncome county. Huge and moneyed GLBT population. Boone is pretty gay friendly too.

Cleveland-Rutherford County and environs is a bit weird and backwards. I don't like any of those little towns orbiting Charlotte, even if it is the "queen city".

And don't forget to mention that French Lick is home to the Kimball Upright Organ plant. Surly Camp Lickalotta would fit right in in French Lick.:)

We must be neighbors - I live just NW of that small town. The owners of the camp are from the Rutherford county area and one of them graduated from UNC-A so they should have known where to locate the camp to make it work. Part of me thinks they wanted the controversy (not the death threats - just the controversy). The other alternative is that they are naive in the extreme.

Don't I know it. I spent a year in Lincolnton in the 80s - I'm still not sure I've fully recovered. It was a friend from Lincoln county who originally told me about this camp.

Don't I know it. I spent a year in Lincolnton in the 80s - I'm still not sure I've fully recovered. It was a friend from Lincoln county who originally told me about this camp.

I lived near Gastonia in the early 80s, left after one year and have not been back since. It's pretty well known that whole area tends to be ultra-conservative with several groups of very odd religious fundamentalists thrown into the mix. I agree with the controversy theory. Surely, no one is that clueless.

Hey now! I got folk in Mooresville and they have no problem with gays. (Granted some of them still feel that lesbians are for their entertainment but then they watch waaaaaay to much porn...)

I'm from Reidsville btw. They were backwards when I was there but I haven't lived there in 9-10 years. Having said that, Dad ripped into his sister when her daughter came out and she (my aunt) disowned her. When my cousin and her partner adopted their son, Dad insisted that they come down to visit him and stay in his house. (My aunt lived next door.) It took about 3 days but my aunt finally broke and came over and one look at the little foots and it was all good. Staci (cuz's partner) said it was down right cute how Dad would obviously have no idea what to say but would constantly try to engage her in conversation to make her feel welcome.

Any (very, very, veryveryveryvery slight) doubts that I won the jackpot in the adoption lottery were gone that day.:)

:confused: Never heard that Charlotte had a high gay population, assuming that's what you mean...and got the impression the outlying areas were pretty/very conservative. In fact, the same for most of NC, Asheville area notwithstanding.

Charlotte was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg thus "the Queen City" or QC.
 
Since it is FOR ADULTS, I think it is a great name! And, you know, there is some pleasure in pissing off stupid people intentionally...
