In synch with the new Indiana Jones movie, Sci-Fi is presenting a two-hour long show on the "Mystery of the Crystal Skulls" tonight.
Hosted by NBC anchor Lester Holt, the blurbs contain juicy tidbits like "an artifact that could not be produced by humans!" and grainy photos of a UFO....

I might force myself to watch the last 15 minutes just to see if they come up with any conclusions.

I've seen chunks of it and the pieces I saw were pretty balanced - they showed a Smithsonian anthropologist pointing out that whatshisname bought one of them at a Sotheby's or Christie's auction, and that under an electron microscope tracks of a diamond drill can be seen. But that was only a few minutes.

This is by far the ********* thing scifi has ever done.

If I'm not mistaken, Richard Hoagland is featured in this show. I saw him Sunday on a show regarding crystal skulls anyways, assuming it's the same show. Changed the channel the moment I saw him. Just couldn't force myself to watch.

Hopefully people will realize that this channel is called "SciFi" for a reason.

I watched it. I kept reminding myself this was on the 'science fiction' channel for a reason. I don't think even the History channel would have played this one (though I could be wrong...)

Though they did mention a few critiques against the given theories of the skulls, the driving message really seemed to be in favor of the paranormal or extraterrestrial origins and purposes for them.

One thing that impressed me: they didn't mention quantum physics once!

Ah, but rather than coming to the conclusion that the skull was made more recently with modern tools they came to the conclusion that ancient people had technology from aliens. At times I almost thought this was a parody of documentaries. The "let's search for skulls for ten minutes, then give up and feel disappointed" moments were laughable as was the token gesture of giving a replica to that guide so they would "always be connected."

They also said the skull was made out of the same thing computer chips were made from!! And that if we could store tons of data in a computer chip then think of how much data this huge skull could hold!!! They even mentioned something like "the quartz chips in the computer" like there are actual crystals in the memory chips.

I liked the guy who claimed they found the head of a robot on the moon and that it was related to the skulls somehow. Then, to top himself, he claimed they got the head to talk at area 51.

Anyway, if this was supposed to be serious it has to be the worst documentary ever made, if it was supposed to be parody then they should have added more comedy, like have that guy's tupee blow off or something.

I can take it on SciFi. I mean, look at the name of the channel.

Where I sound like I have tourette's syndrom is when this goes on the Science Channel, or the History Channel. And likely it will.

Several years ago, a woman who had one of those said her father was an archeologist, yada yada, had found the crystal skull in a site (in S. America, I think) on her 16th birthday and gave it to her. She may have been on the SciFi channel, I didn't watch it.

Anyway, microscopic examination showed diamond drills.

Why the woman lied, I have no idea, but I could be convinced that she actually believed the story she made up.

I could only last 5 minutes, and I raced to change the channel. I saw the part where Bikewer mentions in the first post. Laughable, and would have been a waste of my time to watch.

I was too busy trying to get back on the internet since Thursday, anyway. :(

That was Anna Mitchell-Hedges. Her father was a writer and adventurer called FA Mitchell-Hedges. He wasn't an archeologist but claimed to be interested in ancient history and civilisations; he did travel and explore, but he was also a fantasist and tall-story teller who wrote books and had a weekly radio show detailing his thrilling adventures.
He invented the whole "Crystal Skulls" schtick, claiming that Anna had found the "Skull of Doom" while she was accompanying him on an exploration trip in Belize. There is no evidence that she was ever on any of his trips, and Joe Nickell has dug up convincing evidence that Mitchell-Hedges bought the Skull at a Sothebys auction in 1944.
Anna died last year, but for a couple of years she had a website where she was bigging up not just the Skull of Doom, but also a "miraculous icon" that she just happened to possess. The current Mitchell-Hedges website has a section on it.
As to why Anna lied - I can only guess is that it's something to do with the fact that she was adopted.

I'd have bought that they DID find a REAL artifact, ancient in age, made by beings with ability that the men of that time didn't poses...IF they have found another similiar skull in another location.

I mean that's what scientific archaeology does. It finds an artifact, studies it, its placement, its surroundings, and then tries to predict where they'll find another similiar artifact.

Had they found another, or even several 'other skulls', then I'd have swallowed ther whole myth hook, line, and sinker.

For now, I will suspend judgement.

MY QUESTIONS:

When did this skull 'appear', in the hands of its owner?

What kind of technology existed around that time, 'diamond cutters', to sahpe and form this shape?

&

Was the formation of the crystal itself 'suspect', meaning was it actually formed in zero G, or does it share similiarities with terresterial formations?

This program also now has me looking forward to the 12/21/2012 predictions.

In the show, they said the purpose of the skulls was to save the earth from the destruction that 2012 would bring. I expect in 2013, we'll be hearing how we now have proof of the skulls power, since after all, nothing happened on 12/21/2012...

This show was truly horrible.

The funniest part was when they saw the "energy" on a thermal imaging camera (NOT HEAT ACCORDING TO THEM LOL) that only appeared if you touch the skull. Look ma! We touched the skull and it gives off ENERGY!

Are these people for real?

Adopted people can and often do tell the truth. :)
Yes, I know. My apologies to adoptees. I was was in a hurry and worded this wrongly.
What I meant was that being adopted could have given her a very strong psychological reason to think that the man who "rescued" her and gave her a home was a wonderful person who could do no wrong.

If you google "crystal skull skeptic" you'll find plenty of info - Skeptoid for one.
Anyway, there is nothing unusual about any of the crystal skulls - they are just carved rock crystal.
