How To Be A Global Warming Sceptic

More likely he's been listening to Lord Munchkin, to whom he's related by marriage. It seems he's spouting exactly the same ignorant nonsense, and sees no need to check whether his prejudices accord with the facts. The arrogance of both men is beyond measure.

We'll no doubt here much more about this crock of crap. GWSceptic beggars can't be choosers.

You referring to the 23rd best selling book in the UK?

Most people in the UK know yer "Green" taxes are just a ruse to steal more money from the people, and have nothing to do with saving the planet.

You don't.

Not much sign of suppression there. But whingeing paranoia is the hallmark of the climate-change denier. How else can they explain the world's mockery of their belief that Earth is not warming and that most climate scientists are wrong? Someone must be to blame.
What really grates is Lawson's conviction that most of the world's climatologists, meteorologists, atmospheric physicists, Arctic experts, and biologists, as well several Nobel Prize winners, are all stupid, misguided and wrong in thinking manmade global warming is real. By contrast, Lawson, ensconced in his Gascogny house, where, incidentally, he found conditions 'perfectly tolerable' during the 2005 French heatwave that killed 15,000 old people, is virtually the only one with the brains to work out the Truth.

It is breathtaking arrogance, to say the least, although Lawson is not alone in displaying it. Several other individuals, usually male, elderly, and right wing, still deny climate change is happening, mainly because they cannot stand the thought that greenies may be right and that we will have to curtail our use of big cars, international flights and other carbon-boosting luxuries. These Grumpy Old Deniers feel their lifestyles are threatened by greenies and so reject the entire concept of global warming. 'With the collapse of Marxism, those who dislike capitalism have been obliged to find a new creed,' says Lawson. 'For many of them, green is the new red.' In short, global warming is a commie plot.
Could've written this myself. :)

Could've written this myself. :)

As could I. McKie hits the high-spots very well in this review.

Lawson's arrogance is legendary, even when he was still in the newspaper business. It's the sort of mindset he shares with Munchkin, an unquestioned sense of superiority based on education, social reinforcement, and (of course) sound breeding.

Given this there is clearly no need for them to look outside their clique for the facts. The facts are what the clique wants them to be. If most people with experience think otherwise, that's because they're intellectually (and probably morally, certainly socially) inferior.

Notice how Lawson comes up with the hockey-stick having been dropped by the IPCC, a common but erroneous belief that bounces around in the GWSceptic clique. You can see exactly where he goes looking for input, and it's where he'll find the input that he wants.

History is not going to be kind to these people. Or at least no kinder than it is to people who declared heavier-than-air flight impossible, or that Hitler had no further territorial demands in Europe.

You're easily impressed, aren't you? Delia Smith's a lot higher. And how many actual copies does 23rd place amount to?

Most people in the UK know yer "Green" taxes are just a ruse to steal more money from the people, and have nothing to do with saving the planet.

This prompts a few questions. Why do you think you know anything about what most Brits think they know? How could it matter what the proles think they know if all the leading parties compete over how seriously they take AGW? Most proles don't vote anyway. And what "Green" taxes are you referring to?

You don't.

I'm not a paranoid libertarian who thinks he's beset by imaginary green taxes. I'm educated, intelligent, and very aware of what's going on around me. I've got a better idea of what most Brits think than you or Lawson.

Most Brits have forgotten Lawson, but when he was Chancellor most Brits thought he was a bumptious <Rule8> who ducked out on a "point of principle" shortly before the ordure hit the air-conditioning.

Tell me more about these green taxes you see buzzing about over my head. It sounds very much like the DT's to me, or possibly a flashback.

Finally mhaze contributes with something interesting...

Slightly off-topic but, nevertheless, even minor steps in the right direction should be appreciated.

One word. Antibiotics.
Do you think just maybe the industrial revolution had a smidgen to do with it?

As your bad attempt at comparing cholesterol levels to global warming (and was wrong BTW) was, this too is just as simplistically idiotic.

Now isn’t this interesting. Despite ridicule from the warmers here, antagonists such as Tamino, Eli Rabbet and the rest of the Hansen sycophants defending the GISS infinite “adjustments”/ “estimations”, the attacks on Anthony Watts have now been rendered impotent. His efforts at http://www.surfacestations.org were not in vain. Sorry to break the bad news :D

Road Trip Update: What I’m doing Wednesday and Thursday

Tomorrow, by an invitation sent almost two months ago, I am meeting with Dr. Thomas Karl and many of the principal scientists at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, NC. I will also be giving a presentation that will include many of the things presented here on this blog, and some that haven’t been.

Road trip Update: Day 1 at NCDC

Quote of the day from Dr. Thomas Karl: “You and your volunteers have surveyed almost half of the network on a zero budget. If we had undertaken this, it would have meant preparing several proposals and allocating thousands of dollars”.

Day 2 at NCDC and Press Release: NOAA to modernize USHCN

But the big news came with Dr. Baker providing me with a press release (new today) to post here for you all to see. CRN is getting completed and USHCN modernization is starting:

NOAA today announced it will install the last nine of the 114 stations as part of its new, high-tech climate monitoring network. The stations track national average changes in temperature and precipitation trends. The U.S. Climate Reference Network (CRN) is on schedule to activate these final stationsby the end of the summer.
NOAA also is modernizing 1,000 stations in the Historical Climatology Network (HCN), a regional system of ground-based observing sites that collect climate, weather and water measurements. NOAA’s goal is to have both networks work in tandem to feed consistently accurate, high-quality data to scientists studying climate trends.

See the full press release here:

What this means: No more adjusted data, the raw data from CRN and from HCN-M is the real data and will be pristine, assuming the network is maintained. No more torturous gyrations of FILNET, SHAP, and TOBS. The downside is that a track record needs to be built up, the older data is also going to be revised with USHCN2 algorithms soon, and I’ll touch on that later.

One thing that Debra Braun said to me today in the meeting hit home: “our funding had been cut for the last two years, and we were unable to move forward until this year”. This made me think that perhaps some of the focus the surfacestations.org project brought to illuminating the deplorable condition of the network may have helped a little bit in convincing some legislators that it was time to get serious about allocating funding to complete the CRN and fix the USHCN. A little public embarrassment of the USHCN provided by all of us that have contributed to surfacestations.org may have helped. I’d sure like to think so.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Baker, Debra Braun, Grant Goodge, and the entire CRN science team, plus Jeff Arnfield, and Steven Del Greco for answering all my questions and taking such careful time with me. Additionally I wish to thank Dr. Karl, and Assistant Director Sharon LeDuc for hearing my concerns and offering ideas.

Everyone there at NCDC made me feel welcome and appreciated.
Most importantly, I want to thank you, my loyal readers and volunteers, because without your help, the trip and presentation I made would not be possible.

Do you care to discuss why? Just find me one doctor that will have to individually statistically show for each patient that cholesterol levels are causing their morbidity before prescribing lipitor.

What is the best practice. Measure cholesterol. If its high, lower it.

Uhhh...

Does Gavin Schmidt still have a job?

Watts statistical analysis has magically become skillful? D'Aleos? Has he updated his blog with new posts that point out how misguided his earlier attempts were?

Oh, he hasn't?

No offense, but your ignorance (no insult intended) on this subject is more than obvious. Do you really think all doctors (and researchers) think the same with regard to cholesterol levels and statin drugs? You are very sadly mistaken.

I don’t wish to go into a protracted discussion on this matter, but will suggest doing some serious research into the matter. Try looking into infection, inflammation, insulin/leptin resistance, homocysteine and CRP levels for starters.

Good luck relying on Lipitor to keep you healthy.

Been there, done that.

Actually though, I'm more interested in your comments on Anthony Watts being recognized by NCDC and invited to give a presentation. It seems to me they have much respect for Anthony Watts to request his presence, wouldn't you agree?
