If you are so naive of how the music industry functions then perhaps you should read up on it and find out how the majority of what is played in heavy rotation and declared "popular" comes from a very small group of people.

So people look at the top 50 charts, which are controlled by corporations, then buy a lot of the music, thus placing the music in the top 50...? Vicious cycle there.

No. With gangster rap, or any other kind of new musical trend...it starts on the street. In the clubs, etc. People start playing the music. It attracts crowds. It attracts attention. People in the music industry, see a buzz being created in a local "scene" and sign a few bands. Then they bleed that trend dry, and then they can move onto the next trend.
