Well one part of the theory works: you can trip out by drinking the urine of a creature that ate magic mushrooms. Northern shamans used to get all shamanic by drinking the urine of reindeer that had eaten fly agaric mushrooms. The reindeer filtering system probably diluted the chemicals in the mushroom so they were less toxic-- I think those 'shrooms are pretty toxic if you just eat them.

So, using reindeer to 'get high' and 'take a trip'... :sleigh

Fly agaric only grows on the tundra, so I guess the next thing for Lauras to research is how many trippy mushrooms grew in the ancient Middle East and what religious uses the locals put them to.

And Lauras-- friendly advice: Use punctuation. ;)

I think that the common consensus is that this idea is completely kooky. Yes, psychidelics do feature in a number of shamanic and other religions. I've even encountered a Christian who advocated using psychidelics as sacraments. But I don't think the idea that religion itself is derived from drugs is a very popular one.

Now, to everyone else.

It appears to me that a number of posters have seen lauras' writing style and automatically assumed that she is a kook on that basis alone. This is unfair. Sure, a course in basic English grammar would help, but it is not true that all people with poor grammar are kooks. So far from what I've seen, lauras has been asking a variety of questions out of genuine curiosity, and I think that the treatment she has received from some posters (apparently on the basis of her grammar alone) has been deplorable.

Lauras, I hope you have a thick skin and a good sense of humour, because you're not getting the treatment that I have come to expect from posters on this board. Please do not let this discourage you. There is an "ignore" facility which you can use if someone really annoys you. You can read up about that in the forum help as well. Please keep asking questions - it is the height of hypocracy for a skeptic to discourage you from asking questions.

because you didn't watch or appreciate the aforementioned 2 hr video on Jeeebus throwing up mushrooms (or whatever).

People here are always welcoming unless you were being sarcastic its hard to tell without a little smiley face haha lol your questions don't make any sense is why you didn't get the answers you wanted.

Or to put it another way, you need to accept that the first impression you create in a forum like this is determined by the manner in which you express yourself. Like it or not, your educational level is going to be judged by your ability to use English, and the responses you receive will tend to be directed towards that level of education.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with coming across as a semi-educated teenager, as long as that's actually what one is, but it's asking a bit much of people to believe you're going to produce anything revelatory of christian history when you haven't even mastered your native tongue yet.

If you are, as you stated above, interested in finding answers, then first you need to learn how to frame the proper questions.

i am willing to admit that my education may not be to the standerds you are all used to but does that mean i am not allow on this site?
Lots of uneducated people have questions to ask and yes i am not very good at putting my questions across but i feel it is highly unfair for some of you to ridacule me for my lack of education.
I mean by all means correct me constructively but dont make me feel like an idiot just because you have a bigger IQ than i do. its not big and its not smart to make other people feel small to boost you egos
I may have been a bit harsh as some of you have been really nice but i just thought i would let some of you know how i feel now.

By no means (though some might argue that). What it does mean, though, is that your posts are hard to read and even more difficult to understand correctly. Some do not have the patience or the time to decipher them, and so either wander off or get angry. If this is a problem for you, then it is, indeed, your problem, and up to you to fix.

Time spent doing that will pay off handsomely in the long run, I assure you. It is also difficult and time consuming, so start as soon as you can. The fact that you may be "uneducated" will only make the improvement more gratifying to those who watch and note it.

I'm especially inclined to apologize because this post shows that you're willing to meet us halfway. You're taking your readers into account by moderating your tone and writing style.

(Ok, by now, you can probably tell I'm a former English teacher, right? ;))

Yes, you're allowed here. Everyone is, as long as they play nice. And your educational level doesn't really matter. If your ideas are worth considering, people are willing to ignore the occasional typo or misspelling -- tho you will get nitpickers here and there, just like anywhere.

But it is a skeptics' board. So understanding the standards of the skeptical community do matter. You can't just waltz in with some off-the-wall point of view and expect people to jump at it because it blows your mind.

I mean, if I went onto a medical board and started raving about a video on psychic surgery in a tone that sounds like a casual cell phone conversation about personal gossip, I'm gonna get blown off. Simple as that.

When you post here, you're not going to get a chorus of "Kewl!". You're going to be asked to cough up evidence for your claims.

That's what skepticism is.

Now, if you can do that, and you're willing to have your ideas challenged, and you meet those challenges with evidence when you have it, and are willing to modify or abandon your notions when others have stronger arguments, then you'll do fine.

Just some friendly advice from someone who's been spanked here from time to time, and thoroughly enjoyed it. ;)
