New Age religions don't make you happy

I apologize for this response, because it is out of place in this thread. However, since this site is giving away a million dollars to someone who can reliably do just what you are asking for, I'll give you a few tips on how you can experience a legitimate act of magick. First of all, to manifest something into reality you need to picture it clearly in your mind (if you can not picture something clearly and vividly, you can not manifest it); you need to think of it often; and while thinking about it you need to feel excited. There's a lot more to it than this, but that's the simple method. Picture a grande starbucks caramel latte in your mind, hold the image there as clearly as you can for as long as you can while maintaining as powerful an experience of joy and excitement as you can over your tasty beverage. Tell no one about your vision of this latte, and wait to see how long before one falls into your lap. Your result will depend upon your ability to focus. Typical results for a beginner who gives it a humble, legitimate sliver-of-a-doubt chance to actually work = 2 weeks. With further practice, time will decrease, but you must get over your doubt.

Right, I think it's time for "guess the woo". This person has not stated exactly what kind of woo they're into, unless they did so in one of the ramblings above and I missed it due to losing my will to live.

Due to the nature of the above claim and previously tossing words about shamanism around, I call OTO/Golden Dawn on this. It's crawling with Crowleyisms and Crowleyists usually mix, not only their metaphores but also, their brands. With shamanism being a particular favourite. Any takers?

ETA: Oops, kept reading and Crowley is openly mentioned further down to where I threw this in. No secret anymore. I'd claim clairvoyance, but I can't prove I wrote the above before reading the whole thread. Oh, and you don't really get clairvo-points for discovering teh 0bvious.

Thoth has declared himself to be a Shamanic Taoist who studies Theosophy. Classic new-age mix and match.

Shamanism is a set of techniques, not a religion. Taoism was written by shamans, so the two go hand in hand. Theosophy is not a religion, it is the comparative study of the highest teachings of all religions emphasizing the truths common to them all.

Why I respond to your posts is beyond me. Let me ask you this, Zen master Dan, would you be willing to accept what I'm saying is TRUE if it was proven to you beyond a doubt, or would you still desperately cling to your current world-view? You're comfortable with what you know, and that's why you cling to it, and any psychologist would tell you the same thing - change is difficult; especially a change of world-view. You should examine if you are brave enough to accept that reality is not what you have been taught to believe it is, and then question me about my beliefs.

What's this thread about, anyways ????!!!!

And where do you think the Golden Dawn received their information from? I'll take a guess that most of you think they made it up, and that it's all make believe - wishful thinking. Does that make sense to a critical thinker, though, that intelligent people (Crowley was a genius), would devote their lives to practicing something that bore them no fruit at all? If they made it all up, why did they devote their entire lives to a fiction? Why can the same techniques be found in the magickal texts of all languages from around the world? If it's all made up, why isn't there a variety of different techniques, why do they all share common threads? I've already explored the history of magick as a critical, skeptic thinker (that's what Theosophy is), and found that it's just a lost science. It's not really magick, it's the science of working with forces (like gravity) that you can't see with the untrained eye. In that respect compare it to electricity; before anyone knew of electricity that was "magick" as well.

This was my point about there being a lot of religions that recognize magick throughout history and on every continent. If so many people have claimed to have seen it, experienced it, worked with it, and even wrote libraries of books about their findings (all of which share common elements), then how can a critical thinker completely deny the possibility of magick? You deny it because you have not experienced it, and you are here, reading my posts and arguing with me because deep inside you passionately want me to prove it to you. (If that last part were'nt true you would feel indifferent to me). So what is the purpose of this site, and the million dollar challenge, if your founder Mr. Randi isn't saying, "There's a chance that this might be real." ??

For the record I have read Crowley's work, and the Golden Dawn publications. They're nice, but they're not the best. Most of it has been tampered with by them so that no one can make sense of it or use it effectively. My brand of woo is MY OWN. I started with books, but I have received much of what I know from a higher consciousness; I understand that you don't believe in, "the voices in your head," and that you'll declare me to be insane, but who cares. I live life without the questions that you all have about reality, and without the doubt of knowing what's really going on here. To put it in the Buddhist's sense, I AM AWAKE.

The original topic on this thread was whether new age religions make their followers happy. I am one of those who is happy. The rest of this ever expanding thread has been collective curiousity on all your parts about my beliefs and abilities. If you want to know for sure if it's real, then try the meditation that I gave in a previous post. If you want to display your intolerance for people whose ideas contradict your own, then by all means keep typing. You don't offend or bother me in the least.

would you be willing to accept what I'm saying is TRUE if it was proven to you beyond a doubt

Sure! That's why I call myself a sceptic

or would you still desperately cling to your current world-view?

Desperately?

Why do use the word 'desperately'?

Is this an example of projection on your part?

You're comfortable with what you know

Why do you assume this?

and that's why you cling to it

How do you know this?

and any psychologist would tell you the same thing

You know a lot about psychology huh?

From which perspective?

change is difficult; especially a change of world-view

Difficult for you perhaps

Many people find it easy, simply by having an often-changing world-view, one that adapts to and accommodates new evidence... it's called 'learning'... you should try it sometime... it's quite easy and doesn't hurt - unless you're insecure

Sceptics are here on this forum fully aware that, although highly improbable, woos like you might, just might, one day provide some evidence that merits a significant change in world-view

The prospect is fascinating, not scary

You should examine if you are brave enough to accept that reality is not what you have been taught to believe it is

Maybe you should quit with the projecting

and then question me about my beliefs.

Sorry, but that ain't how it works - out there in the real world and, even more so, here on this sceptics forum

If you don't want your extra-ordinary beliefs subjected to scrutiny, don't expose them before sceptics

I claim to see reality for what it is.

Thoth108:

I've been trying to follow but must have missed it - what is it exactly you claim you can do?

I think what you critical thinkers are looking for is Harry Potter. Here is what I claim:

When you look at the world through your eyes, you don't see the whole picture. The world is not what you believe it to be, and it does not work the way you think it does. To put it bluntly, your mind is playing tricks on you in a very complicated way that erases the magickal "energy" from the equation and makes you think that everything happens through a series of physical cause-and-effect. The physical side is an illusion (remember your Buddhist teachings kids, life is an illusion). The magickal energy is what's holding the illusion together - without it, everything is just dust.

To manipulate the magickal energy directly takes (as my meditation suggests): mental concentration, and emotional excitement (energy). With enough of those two things you can do whatever you want to your physical reality. You're doing it subconcsiously right now and you don't realize it; and you're getting the results of it in your life every day.

And, no I won't be claiming the million dollar prize! I'm not interested. Why should I be? They give away more than that each week in the lottery, and all I have to do to win that is look into the future and get the numbers. Randi has nothing to offer anyone with real power in this field, because we already have what we want - we're happy! Life is about recieving Joy, and that's what you learn when you get to be where I am. Money is something for people who believe they are at the mercy of physical cause and effect; people whose lives cannot be changed simply becuase they "will" it to be.:D

Has anyone from the Golden Dawn, or any similar organization applied for the million dollar contest?! Doesn't that strike you as ODD?

I've played Mage: the Ascension as well... loved it, btw (still do in some ways, although I haven't had the opportunity/desire to play for years).

Since when were intellect and logic mutually inclusive?

If they made it all up, why did they devote their entire lives to a fiction?

Why do you pose so many incredulous questions?

You would be much more credible if you came here saying something like:

It isn't all made up.

There is a distinct variety in the techniques; vis:
  • abc
  • xyz
  • etc
Although it may seem that they all share common threads, there are the following variations:
  • aaaaaaaaa
  • bbbbbbbb
  • cccccccccc
  • etc

I've already explored the history of magick as a critical, skeptic thinker (that's what Theosophy is), and found that it's just a lost science.

OK... describe your findings

Perhaps you’ve just teleported this board into World of Warcraft?

How did you learn that this magickal energy exists? How could I learn to manipulate it? And why not apply for the MDC - you say that you're happy, well by successfully winning the MDC you could publicly prove to the skeptical community that you were for real, and we could all start to learn the techniques that make you so happy! The million dollars is inconsequential really - give it away to charity, or hell, even refuse to accept it and just donate it right back to the JREF! You have the opportunity to educate the world, and make them as happy as you are! Please don't be selfish about this!

Well, aren't you? What in all what you have claimed so far isn't woo?
I'm not in disagreeance with you about the upsurdity of my claims. There was a time when I saw things much the same as you all do; difference being I was willing to explore the possibilities of magick for myself. From my current perspective, though, it isn't "woo" and the word "magick" is really not correct; what I work with is energy, and the techniques are nothing more than precise control of your own mind and feelings to bring about a desired result - whether it be exiting your body, or materializing a caramel latte. It sounds crazy, and I admit that.

Why does it have to be private? Why can't you just present it here, so that more people can benefit from this enlightenment?
Start a new thread. The instructions are lengthy, and out of place in this thread. I'm not sure that I rank high enough in the forums to create a thread, so if someone starts it for me I'll participate enthusiastically.

Do you understand that you just contradicted yourself there? If you can fast forward or rewind time to wherever you want, then time does exist.
Time exists in our dimension. The other dimension exisits above time. That is the fact of it. If you can take a few minutes and conceive of such a thing - that a place in the universe exists seperate from time, then you can understand. I can site references in many books by people like myself who have been there that explain the same phenomenon. There is no contradiction.

Does this mean you can see inside a box?
I've never tried. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Why on Earth not? How much will it take? Are you having problems expressing yourself?
To explain the exact discipline necessary to stop your brain from interfering with this, would take a great deal of space. Simple explanation: you learn to shut your brain off. Your thoughts are non-words, or symbolic before they become words - you have to shut off the part of your brain that turns the symbolic knowledge into words and learn to just use the symbolic knowledge to think with. This, in turn, stops the part of the brain that fantasizes things and gets in the way. Once you have control of your thoughts then you can begin work. Mental discipline.

No, let's keep things out in the open. I am not looking to be your secret student, I am looking for your evidence.
Okay. But can I still send you a christmas card?

Why are your senses not playing tricks on you?
Mental discipline again. In order to do most of what I'm talking about you have to learn to shut off your senses. Your five senses flood the brain with information - itchy nose, sounds of the neigbors kids, smelling what the rock is cooking, etc... with all of that flowing into your brain your mind gets distracted - so you have to learn to shut off the flow of sensory input. I know it's not my senses playing tricks on me, because I know how to distinguish between what my five senses are bringing in, and what my sixth sense is bringing in. Also, with the figures of light that I see, you can tell that it's nothing you're imagining. It would be like me saying, "how do you know that you see those people on the street?" when you can clearly see them.

And this happened?
It could. I've been there (to that time) a few times now. I'm not sure that I want to take that path through life.

You think that having experiences of your own past is evidence of these supernatural powers? Are you kidding??
No, it's not supernatural to have an experience of your past. But it goes beyond normal explanation when you can go to that event and experience it from a perspective that is outside of yourself, like from another camera angle almost; or recall parts of it that you were unaware of previously. The past is a bad example, becuase the skeptic can always argue that, "the mind can remember anything that it's seen or experienced," thus explaining the event through memory. If you do this meditation for yourself, you have no doubt about the reality of it though.

No, let's hear it now.
There are as many time lines through infinity as there are sentient beings to experience them. We all live in our own universe, that intersects partially with those we come into contact with, but it does not have to intersect completely. You don't know that I experience the same dimension as you do (and, in fact I do not), we only assume that we see and experience the same things as those around us. This is why Sylvia's predictions are always wrong, because there isn't just one time line that's going to happen; there are many, many time lines. The one that we collectively experience as the reality we share is the one that we all collectively agree on in our minds. Remember how I said that your doubt can kill my magick? Same thing here - you are projecting your own reality around you, and I share that job of projecting with you when I'm near you; if it's just you and I, then we decide the reality - it's our time line. If later on we both agree to change what we saw, no one else needs to be involved and we can change the past that you and I experienced. The universe takes care of the details that fall in between - there is no "Back to the Future," like effect to it where everyone and everything is effected.

But human perception can easily be fooled, even though you think you are a careful observer.
It's not about just being careful, it's about being positively sure of it. Like I said, you have to shut off your senses while you do this. Anything that disturbs the tranquility of the mind will cause the visions to cease and normal eye sight will return. Besides, if you saw what I saw you wouldn't doubt it!

Take a look at this illusion. Can you, merely by observation, determine if A and B are different shades of grey, or if they are the same?
At first glance, using my normal eye sight they appear to be different. If I use the technique that I use for seeing, then the illusion vanishes. You should try staring blankly at the image until you can see it for what it is. I'm a film maker by trade, and I've seen many, many of these optical illusions before, they're useful for testing your abilities to see things honestly - not relying on the first impression that your brain gets when observing something. After a moment or two I can see the greys differently among all of the squares. A and B are the same shade.

You have to understand that personal experiences weigh very little on a forum for skepticism and critical thinking.

Something a little more spectacular, maybe. I sure didn't expect it to be somethink akin to what I read on the back of cereal boxes.
Read the book, God Speaks by Meher Baba. What is in that book is the truth of the whole matter I'm speaking of about the meaning of life and such. I received that knowledge prior to getting that book from a friend (a few days prior), and was surprised at the fact that Meher had come up with the same explanations that I had heard. If it seems simple to you, maybe you should consider that. Life isn't really complicated, it actually is that simple. Just live, and have fun.

If this is just a joke, come out and say it now, and stop wasting people's time.
No joke. And I'm wasting my time here as well. There is nothing beneficial for me in doing this, and I don't get kicks out of razzing all of you. I'm interested in this forum because you have so few of us shamans who come forth to tell you science/skeptic types that there is something more to reality than what you understand of it. Carlos Castaneda wrote books about this stuff decades ago, and there are many people world wide that followed that path into the same understandings that I have acheived. You can train yourself to see with your own eyes the energy that new-agers are talking about, and it's possible for anyone to do so. Period.

"It only works if I'm alone. If there's a skeptic in the room, the effect disappears."

Would you accept this excuse of yours from someone who claimed to be able to conjure spaceships?
I see your point, and I knew that this would be a difficult side of the equation to explain. Let me think about it, and I'll try to come around to this in another way.

What is the difference between that, and "They are sending beams through my ceiling to kill my thoughts"?

Yes, that's what skeptics call the Clustering Illusion.
I understand that principle. Crowley actually writes about this alot, and we students of the art are to check our work versus such chance-odds to see if we are making false conclusions. To make it clear, I consider this whenever I notice a result from my work.

Why not? That would be precisely the evidence you need, in order to convince other people.
Who said I'm looking to convince you of my power? I want you to awaken to the possibility of your own power; or, rather, I just want you to be awake. *see Buddhism.

Who has an instant "manifest-time"?
Anyone in a higher dimension experiences instant manifest time. Those with signifigant power on Earth would not reveal themselves to you; there would be no point in doing so. This brings up an interesting point though, becuase the reason we are on Earth is to experience the: contrast of wanting something, and not receiving it instantly but at a later point in time; the whole reason that we are here is to want, wait, then receive. I can site this being explained in many, many different religous texts - including the Bible where it is symbolically expressed in the story of the fall of Satan.

Before you went on to these bigger things, did you try moving things with your mind?
I'll give it a shot just for you guys.

Yes, it is. Because that's what you are trying to do here, e.g. when you invite people in for private lessons.
I want you to awaken to your own powers; what you do with them is your destiny. Would you spend your money on me to prove that you have money?

How do we know that you are closer to enligthenment than us? That these books are just books of clever sayings to you?

Should we trust your word?
No. You should never trust anyone, especially about these things. If you'd like to test my knowledge of buddhism, yoga, or magick then do your research and ask me any question you like. If you'd like to know about enlightenment, then ask.

I'd have to agree with Thoth that we know very little about the nature of reality and its connection to thought and expectation. No doubt, we're in for some surprises, no matter how rational and intelligent we are.
I have sat in silence until my inner voice stopped generating thought.
The results were quite profound. I usually don't talk about it.

Humility can be over-bearing if it gets mentioned.
Yet, one wonders how many scientists ever truly probe the nature of their own consciousness, in a disciplined manner.

Mind/brain discussions aren't always woo.
Everything we do begins as thought. Its hard to dodge that.

Theoretical physics and philosophy have more in common than many from either camp are glad to admit.

Excellent post.
Just as a side issue.. hopefully Thoth will hang around for a while... but just look at this thread, it is such hard (and often boring, pedantic) work sticking around in this forum if you're a person who dares to try to explain a world view at odds with the world view here. It's a shame. You'd think maybe people would have more sense and would be able to hang back a bit, without the usual dogmatism. But such is life, eh.
It's a shame because with even, say, 5 or 6 Thoths this forum would be doubly interesting.

You work with energy? Good!

Please raise the temperature of this bottle of water with 1C.

Start a new thread. The instructions are lengthy, and out of place in this thread. I'm not sure that I rank high enough in the forums to create a thread, so if someone starts it for me I'll participate enthusiastically.

You can start a new thread. Start by explaining why you decided to drop your demand of keeping what you will explain secret.

You have to understand that just because some people "explain" something in "many" books doesn't make it "fact".

I've never tried. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

And I'll predict right now that you will come back and say that you couldn't.

To explain the exact discipline necessary to stop your brain from interfering with this, would take a great deal of space. Simple explanation: you learn to shut your brain off. You are talking about meditation now? Or something that goes beyond that?

Mental discipline again. In order to do most of what I'm talking about you have to learn to shut off your senses. Can you use this 6th sense to determine if the grey squares in the illusion I linked to are the same color or not?

It could. I've been there (to that time) a few times now. I'm not sure that I want to take that path through life.

But that's not experiences of the future that came true. That's just you fantasizing about the good life.

Have you had any experiences of the future that came true?

No, it's not supernatural to have an experience of your past. But it goes beyond normal explanation when you can go to that event and experience it from a perspective that is outside of yourself, like from another camera angle almost; or recall parts of it that you were unaware of previously. The past is a bad example, becuase the skeptic can always argue that, "the mind can remember anything that it's seen or experienced," thus explaining the event through memory. If you do this meditation for yourself, you have no doubt about the reality of it though.

Why is going back in the past and seeing things from a different perspective supernatural and not just your fantasy at work?

There are as many time lines through infinity as there are sentient beings to experience them.

Does this mean that sentient beings will experience the same rock, always?

We all live in our own universe, that intersects partially with those we come into contact with, but it does not have to intersect completely. You don't know that I experience the same dimension as you do (and, in fact I do not),

Why is that a "fact"?

we only assume that we see and experience the same things as those around us. This is why Sylvia's predictions are always wrong, because there isn't just one time line that's going to happen; there are many, many time lines.

Wait a moment. If there are as many time lines as there are "sentient" beings, then Sylvia's predictions will always be right.

Do I have to be present to kill your magick? Can I doubt from afar, even in another time? Do I have to doubt your specific magick when you do it?

It's not about just being careful, it's about being positively sure of it. Like I said, you have to shut off your senses while you do this. Anything that disturbs the tranquility of the mind will cause the visions to cease and normal eye sight will return. Besides, if you saw what I saw you wouldn't doubt it!

But I can't see what you saw, can I? We each live in different time lines, don't we?

At first glance, using my normal eye sight they appear to be different. If I use the technique that I use for seeing, then the illusion vanishes. You should try staring blankly at the image until you can see it for what it is. I'm a film maker by trade, and I've seen many, many of these optical illusions before, they're useful for testing your abilities to see things honestly - not relying on the first impression that your brain gets when observing something. After a moment or two I can see the greys differently among all of the squares. A and B are the same shade.

Yes, they are. But I don't believe that you merely used this supernatural power of yours. Are you willing to undergo a scientific test?

Read the book, God Speaks by Meher Baba. What is in that book is the truth of the whole matter I'm speaking of about the meaning of life and such. I received that knowledge prior to getting that book from a friend (a few days prior), and was surprised at the fact that Meher had come up with the same explanations that I had heard. If it seems simple to you, maybe you should consider that. Life isn't really complicated, it actually is that simple. Just live, and have fun.

I am tired of superstitious people telling me to "Read The Book" if I want to learn "The Truth". I get that all the time, so why is Your Book better than all the others?

Period.

We do get people like you telling us about Their Truth. They don't stay when they find out that skeptics don't accept to be told The Truth. We want to see evidence.

I see your point, and I knew that this would be a difficult side of the equation to explain. Let me think about it, and I'll try to come around to this in another way.

I can hardly contain my anticipation.

But that's exactly what you are demanding that we do.
...
What is the difference between that, and "They are sending beams through my ceiling to kill my thoughts"?

You didn't respond to these.

I understand that principle. Crowley actually writes about this alot, and we students of the art are to check our work versus such chance-odds to see if we are making false conclusions. To make it clear, I consider this whenever I notice a result from my work.

And you completely rule it out?

Who said I'm looking to convince you of my power? I want you to awaken to the possibility of your own power; or, rather, I just want you to be awake. *see Buddhism.

When you come here, telling us about your supernatural powers and how we can achieve them as well, then you are looking to convince us.

When I ask you "who", I want names.

I'll give it a shot just for you guys.

You didn't, then. You just jumped to the conclusion that you weren't able to move things with your mind, and started to work "bigger".

I want you to awaken to your own powers; what you do with them is your destiny. Would you spend your money on me to prove that you have money?

Then, it's about you proving these powers to others.

No. You should never trust anyone, especially about these things. If you'd like to test my knowledge of buddhism, yoga, or magick then do your research and ask me any question you like. If you'd like to know about enlightenment, then ask.

I'd rather like to test your abilities.

if you're a person who dares to try to explain a world view at odds with the world view here.

Fortunately, you don't have to go to the effort to explain anything... I'd just like to be shown something!

:(

ETA:

Theoretical physics and philosophy have more in common than many from either camp are glad to admit.

Be careful not to conflate philosophy with supernatural-magicky-effects. It doesn't do a service to philosophy.

To me, the sum total thingy; the universe(s) is a supernatural magicky effect; all the rest is science.

I was thinking of David Bohm and Krishnamurti. Quantum mechanics is only recently emerging from the mystical into the rational.

The part of your statement I've bolded is what is politely termed 'nonsense' and more often colloquially referred to as a synonym for 'male bovine excrement'.

QM has only recently (well, for a few years now) been commandeered by the forces of woo. It should go without saying that QM and 'woo QM' bear about as much resemblance to eachother as a gum tree does to a joint.

You have misunderstood my excrement. Perhaps it was worded poorly.
How about this:
Before we had the machinery to examine sub-atomic particles, and to probe more deeply into the nature of reality in a scientific manner, it was all speculation and philosophy. "Mystical" is a bit misleading, yet science, in a way, does emerge from mystery.

That would be true if that was how QM came about. That's not the case, however - QM came about precisely because experimental data required it to. The beginnings of QM were not in 'speculation and philosophy' - they were in experiments and scientific rigour.
