:D In my opinion, atheism is a bogus philosophy, at least for all practical purposes. Maybe it's just a crappy word. Sure, I can understand someone wanting to call their self an atheist to avoid being associated with some organized religion, which I believe are also bogus as Hell.

However, to suggest you do not believe in an intelligence and power which dramatically transcends that of mankind is, to me, ludicrous. Maybe this intelligence and power is really called TOTO or something else. However, to deny that it exists is absolutely ridiculous. Why ridiculous?

To deny the existence of an intelligence which is both wiser and more powerful than man means you must believe that ORDER DOES NOT REQUIRE INTELLIGENT DIRECTION. The FACT is, this is impossible!

There are numerous examples of incredibly sophisticated and complex orderliness which are beyond the capabilities of man to produce. An eagle, for example, can do things man simply can not replicate, regardless of the nature of man's efforts. Plus, the eagle can reproduce.

The EARTH, itself, is traveling through space at 18.51 miles per second or 66,636 mph, constantly, on its annual orbit around the Sun which it completes once every 365.2422 days, precisely. This mechanical process is far more durable and precise than any watch or clock man has ever been able to make.

Therefore, call it God, TOTO, or whatever you like..but it "is" here. To deny it is simply insanity. Therefore, you atheists need to be more specific or people will just think you're NUTS!!!!!

Wow, we've never ever heard any of that before. You have produced completely original and profound thinking, that we'll be sure to examine in detail. Thank you so much for enlightening us... [/sarcasm]

People thinking I'm nuts is not reason enough for me to change my mind. You must be quite familiar with this concept.

Which one is the non-bogus one and how do you know?

Atheism is bogus, religion is bogus, not believing in a higher power is bogus, the whole thing sound bogus.

Wrong, the length of a day has changed dramatically over the millenia. Back in the Paleozoic era, a day was only 21 hours. Not very precise now, is it?

Note, I may be wrong on the exact dates, but I do know that a day is getting longer if you assume an hour is a consistent unit of time.

Yet another astounding display of ignorance from bwinwright

One is not an atheist to avoid being associated with religion. That's just one of the fringe benefits.

The name is irrelevant. Believing that some great TOTO exists is ludicrous.

The FACT is, ORDER exists.

There are numerous examples of incredibly sophisticated and complex orderliness which are beyond the capabilities of man to produce. An eagle, for example, can do things man simply can not replicate, regardless of the nature of man's efforts. Plus, the eagle can reproduce.
What can an eagle do that man can't? Grow feathers and a beak? Man can fly, man can see long distances with telescopes, man can eat bunnies.

And last I checked, man can reproduce quite easily. Some might say too easily.

365.2422 days is your example for intelligence? Any intelligent being would have simply shifted earths orbit one way or the other to make an even 365 or 366 days. Then we could have displensed with leap years.

I feel so lost after reading this post. All these new thoughts I am hearing about for the first time. None of these statements have be talked about in this forum before.

Oh, wait.

bwinwright- If you are really looking for some input on this topic this is the place to be. If you want to learn and gain knowledge this is the place to be. There are very smart people on this forum who will help you. Hopefully you are open to criticism of your post.

My opinion is that you are just going to post and run or post and become a atheist vs.christian thread. Prove me wrong.

Oh, how profound! And not belonging to any club at all is a really bogus club to belong to. And not believing in any magical beings is a really bogus magical being to believe in. And... :p

" . . imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for."

Wrong. For example, celetial bodies of a certain size are spheres. This is not a coincidence, they are "crafted" by the MINDLESS force of gravity.

There are numerous examples of incredibly sophisticated and complex orderliness which are beyond the capabilities of man to produce. An eagle, for example, can do things man simply can not replicate, regardless of the nature of man's efforts. Plus, the eagle can reproduce.

We've all heard this argument before and I'm irritated by people who come in here and act like we have never ever considered their point of view. Why do you tell me the counter-argument to your opinion (because you should always know your opponent's POV). Then tell me why my counter-argument is wrong. It will be a good excercise for you.

The EARTH, itself, is traveling through space at 18.51 miles per second or 66,636 mph, constantly, on its annual orbit around the Sun which it completes once every 365.2422 days, precisely. Wrong again. Cesium atomic clocks are more accurate.

I don't believe that order does not require intelligent direction. I just think it's a far more interesting world if I don't assume that it does and see how far I can get without it.

Dang it. I fell for it. I got sucked in to a thread by someone who has no intention of posting replies.

bwinwright just begins a thread and runs away. He has started 6 thread with a total of 8 posts.

I feel violated.

Here's the really cool thing about opinions:

I don't have to care what you think, in order to live my life the way I want to live it.

So you just go ahead and think that all you want, to your heart's content. You think atheism's bogus? Cool for you. I think your arguments are bogus. Cool for me, and if my thinking this doesn't affect your life in any way, as your thoughts won't affect mine, then you'll understand just what I mean.

Isn't it grand?

What kind of philosphy is not believing in the easter bunny and the tooth fairy?

I find that good thinking.

What order have you found that has allowed you to deny at 100% probability involvement of intelligent direction?
