We Want To See Your Papers

Not this nonsense again... and what's with the scare title "we want to see your papers"?

Biggest non-issue of the century, right up there with the North American Union and the Amero, therefore I expect all the Ron Paul supporters to be all over this thread denouncing Real ID.

A good rule of thumb for me is that if Alex Jones is against it, I am for it. So click here to see all the hysteria over Real ID at prisonplanet...

I have my doubts about whether a national ID card is worth the trouble (about five minutes after they come out someone will have a program to forge fake ID's) but the paranoia about this issue is silly.

This isn't even a national ID card, just nationalized standards for state ID cards. I really don't understand the problem.

There are uh.. two reasons. Possibly a third, but it's not a major reason

1] A unifed database is a tempting hacking target. And THAT would be a serious issue.

2] RFID. Thankfully, this seems to be optional, but I'm almost wary by rule of stuff like that.

3] Where do you think the cost is going? Even reduced it STILL is another 3.9 billion dollars.

Between this and Obama..er, I mean the anti-christ, $5 and my lead-lined tinfoil hat says this is totally the beginning of Ragnarok.
:D

But seriously, I'm actually more concerned with data clearinghouses doing whatever they wish with my personal information on toilet-tissue preferences than some silly bit of soon-to-be-forged and sold on the black market bureaucratic fishing license.

Ragnarok already happened a few years back. You are not keeping up with "Thor" comics, are you?
And now Asgard has been relocated to Oklahoma. I kid you not.
I guess I should be scared that here in California The Terminator is in charge of the ID program and is sending all the date to Skynet.

Well, I have much the same problems.. I'm more afraid of what they'll DO with the data than having to present it.

What can they do?
(Not being a smart aleck, I do really want to know.)

* Keep you from flying?

Can't they already do that?

* Keep you from traveling to another state?

If that happens, I think things will have gotten so bad that it'll be time to stop and knock on the door of Bubba who is living in his mountain fortress and advise to him that (sigh) yes, you were right, the Government is evil and is out to get me...I'm sorry I called you a you deranged crackpot. Now may I have my rocket launcher back?

* Keep you from getting a Bank account or Credit card?

Considering that even illegal residents can get both already?

What else?

What information will this database have that the Social Security and IRS databases don't have?

Exactly. In an era of identity theft and and being harassed at airports because you share the name of a suspected terrorist, a reliable way to identify yourself is a good thing. The feds already now who you are, where you live, how much you make and can get your bank records if they want them. I have never understood how a national id card is a privacy issue. It can't be any worse than what is happening now.

Now, if this was extended to the 'next level' THEN I'd be concerned:

Neither have I. Identity theft is a huge issue right now, the ID standards of many states are a joke.

Well, that's why you want to stop it as many "levels" away from this as you can.

There's a new video on LiveLeak where a Russian police officer demands some guy's "papers". Yes, we need to stop this as many "levels" away as possible.

And no one here has explained how we are even one bit closer to that with Real ID.

I suspect I'm older than you, but I remember distinctly the horror that was instilled in us as children at the thought of living in a country like the Soviet Union or East Germany - where you had to carry your papers and verify your identity at every turn in the name of national security. That so many are so completely unfazed by this sort of thing and accept it as just sensible, frankly, sends a chill up my spine and your contempt for those who do see the parallels and are concerned with the steady slide toward USSR style statism is very disheartening. People can't even remember, apparently, what liberty and freedom really are.

I know a guy that ended up on the no-fly list. The first time he was stopped, he was carrying proper ID in the form of a US Passport, but that didn't matter. He still wasn't allowed to board his flight. The only thing that mattered is that his name (David with a common Anglo-Saxon surname) was on the list.

But how does unifying the standards for existing ID cards represent a step towards having to carry your papers and verify your identity at every turn.

This doesn't make ID cards mandatory, does it?

The Irony is that it's not government that makes carrying a form of ID essential, buy Private business. Try to write or cash a check, use a credit care, or reserve a hotel room without one.
It's not a case of Big Brother, but a case of business's want to be damn sure you are who you say you are to keep from being stiffed .
