Bigfoot: The Invisible Variety

Apparently President Theodore Roosevelt disagrees with you, and agrees with me. Sorry. This just completely slipped my mind since you boys were focusing on Carter.

SORRY TO COMPLETELY RUIN YOUR DAY! You wanted prooof, so NOW YOU HAVE IT. I guess this means that there will be no more whining, no more stupid demands, no more stupid questions, no more mind games, no more impossible requests and of course, no more DENIAL.

I've been busy this week, but I did check out the book and have read it. Here's the bibliographical information:

Theodore Roosevelt. The Wilderness Hunter. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1893, 1902.

I rather expected to find more information about Bauman and his encounter in the book. However, here's what I found:

The story is not in the book. Bauman is not mentioned. The mysterious predator is not mentioned. Unless the publisher abridged the book for the 1902 reprint, it looks as if the whole tale is either made up by someone else and falsely attributed to Roosevelt or as if it came from some other source. I can probably borrow a first edition through interlibrary loan, so I'll see what I can find. Here are the chapter headings from the book in our library:

Preface
Chapter 1: The American Wilderness; Wilderness Hunters and Wilderness Game
Chapter 2: Hunting from the Ranch: The Blacktail Deer
Chapter 3: The Whitetail Deer; and the Blacktail of the Columbia
Chapter 4: On the Cattle Ranges: the Prong-Horn Antelope
Chapter 5: Hunting the Prong-Horn: Frost, Fire, and Thirst
Chapter 6: Among the High Hills; the Bighorn or Mountain Sheep
Chapter 7: Mountain Game: the White Goat
Chapter 8: Hunting in the Selkirks: The Caribou
Chapter 9: The Wapiti or Round-Horned Elk
Chapter 10: An Elk-Hunt at Two-Ocean Pass
Chapter 11: The Moose: The Beast of the Woodland
Chapter 12: Hunting Lore
Appendix

Chapter 11 looked promising, but the beast was the moose, with Roosevelt telling stories of how two of his acquaintances were charged by moose and recounting a second-hand story of how a wounded moose had run down and killed a man named Pingree.

Chapter 12 has no mention of Bauman, but deals with various writers and their works: John Burroughs, Henry David Thoreau, John James Audubon, Caton, Van Dyke, and Dodge, Theodore Winthrop, Parkman, Herman Melville, Fenimore Cooper, Daniel Webster, and at some length, the diaries of George Washington.

So either our library has an abridged copy (there is no indication of its having been abridged, though) or the "Bauman" story is misattributed or a hoax.

Edited to add: It occurs to me that historian might be interested in reading a couple of stories: Ambrose Bierce's "The Damned Thing" and Guy de Maupassant's "The Horla." Both of them deal with invisible creatures that menace humans. Both are fictional, of course.

You da man!

After some more checking, I think you are 100% right that the Roosevelt/Bauman story is a hoax.

Now...who might do such a thing? Surly not Roger Patterson in his 1966 book "Do Abominable Snowmen of America Really Exist"....

Thanks, Locknar. The "night sounds" passage that the site you linked to said were Roosevelt's own bigfoot experience is in chapter 8. Here is the entire passage:
Ammai [the Indian guide] objected strongly to our leaving the neighborhood of the lake. He went the first day's journey willingly enough, but after that it was increasingly difficult to get him along, and he gradually grew sulky. For some time we could not find out the reason; but finally he gave us to understand that he was afraid because up in the high mountains there were "little bad Indians" who would kill him if they caught him alone, especially at night. At first we thought he was speaking of stray warriors of the Blackfeet tribe; but it turned out he was not thinking of human beings at all, but of hobgoblins.

Indeed the night sounds of these great stretches of mountain woodland were very weird and strange. Though I have often and for long periods dwelt and hunted in the wilderness, yet I never before so well understood why the people who live in lonely forest regions are prone to believe in elves, wood spirits, and other beings of an unseen world.

On the next page, Roosevelt enumerates some of the sounds: "the wind moaned harshly through the hemlocks"; "the splashing murmur" of a stream; "the clatter of huge rocks falling down the cliffs"; "the hooting of owls"; the "rumbling of a snow avalanche." He says that if he used his imagination he could turn these into "thunderous voices laughing" and it almost seemed that "some huge shape might stalk out of the darkness."

However, none stalked out. It seems to me that Roosevelt wasn't reporting an uncanny encounter, but just saying that he could understand how people listening to wilderness sounds could get spooked.

Funny I can not find this on say the official Skamania County website, nor in their County Code. Perhaps you could provide an official source?

Fake documentation does not support your claim Neal.

ETA: I'll save you the trouble; not it is listed as "not codified"; wonder why that is *haha*

The Lake Champlain monster "Champ" is protected in both Vermont and New York, and there's a bigfoot protection ordinance, I believe, in Whitehall, New York, as well. I'm sorry to dissapoint anyone, but this does not actually constitute proof that either critter is out there.

Your reply is a super example of phony research, fraud by labeling the documentation as fake, and fraud by virtue of representing the law as not on the books. That makes 3 counts of fraud in one form or another.

Skamania County lists very few laws as accessible for viewing by the public, over the internet. Ordinance No. 1984-2 is not one of the laws available for public viewing. Consequently Locknar's research, like so many other skeptic's work in regard to Bigfoot, appears to be another complete fraud. But I am sure that Locknar himself is just a fine upstanding individual, once he steps away from his computer.

Anyone see a sprocket from an irony meter go flying by? Mine exploded, and I can't find the left-handed wibble sprocket anywhere.

Really? The post/make very few laws accessible for public viewing over the internet?

That is odd, since not only is the county code available on line so are the Ordinances as of 2007.

Of course, I know when I want to look up public law, I almost always go to bigfootinfo.org; the leader in public law resources *haha*.

So...in other words, what you are saying is "I do not have an official source for this uncodified law"; didn't think you did.

Perhaps you are misrepresenting "Ordinances as of 2007" with "ordinances actually passed in 2007".

Update: I've been in touch with a librarian at another school who tells me there is an expanded version of The Wilderness Hunter which includes several more chapters than the 1902 printing. She says that the Bauman story is included in chapter 20 of that edition, subtitled "In Cowboy Land." Her library's copy is in the Rare Book Room, but she is going to try to photocopy the chapter in question and send it to me. I'll tell you what I find.

1995: On August 28, 1995, a TV film crew from Waterland Productions pulled off the road into Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and filmed what they claimed to be a sasquatch in their RV's Headlights.

I would like to be the first to say that I always knew that bigfoot existed. I was simply playing along this whole time.

I mean how could anyone doubt that the Big Stinky one is for real. Look at the YouTube videos people! I mean YOUTUBE. Does it get anymore reliable than that?????

His link takes you to the entire, friggin' county code with every ordinance in it. What are you talking about? It's like you believe in imaginary creatures or something! ;)
