Why is baby eating illegal?

Many species of animals will eat their own young, from time to time: and while the meal is still alive, even!

The fact that most humans are generally revulsed by the idea is probably a circumstance of our evolutionary heritage.

So, that either means there is a valid evolutionary reason why we have laws against eating babies, or that our phisiological heritage messed up, somewhere along the line.

Either way, you still have the freedom to eat dead babies. Just be prepared to pay the consequences.

Can't expectant rabbits reabsorb their embryos? I remember reading that somewhere. Not that it's really relevant to this thread, but then, when would it be relevant? I may mention it at a meeting at work, just because it's interesting and it needs to be said. "Mary hired three new receptionists this month, we're having problems with a vendor, and female rabbits can reabsorb embryos in the womb. Oh, and Friday is Silly Hat Day." I love the corporate world.

I see. So, what about live babies? What's their lobby like?

In case anyone’s interested in gaining a bit more insight on this issue, I found an excerpt from the August 2003 issue of National Infant that offers a relatively thorough analysis:

Postnatal Postmortem
Reflections on death of Live Baby PAC
By Mikey Jr.

The much-hyped Live Baby Political Action Committee succumbed to a sudden and unexpected death last week after its principal contributor rescinded all political and financial support, calling its alignment with the lobbying group an “ill-conceived formula.”
Gerber Foods spokesman Bob Applesauce said his company initially had high hopes for Live Baby and its stated goals of bolstering eugenics regulation and promoting foreign aid for anti-infanticide campaigns.
But relations between the lobbying group and its chief benefactor became strained – and ultimately mashed – when Live Baby instead introduced the so-called “Universal Binky Bill,” which failed to pass through the House Ways and Means Committee.
“The PAC leadership was just so easily distracted – they couldn’t stay focused on a single issue,” Applesauce said. “All it took to break their resolve was to show them a brightly colored object or jangle a set of keys.”
Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn., said the Binky Bill smacked of socialism, and that similar laws in Europe had produced abysmal results.
“I don’t see how it should be the federal government’s responsibility to provide a binky to every citizen,” Santorum said. “Besides, they tried that in Russia, and it created such a backlog that some children didn’t even receive their government-issue binkies until after they had turned 16.”
Live Baby spokesman Jo Jo, the group’s only speaking member, lashed back at criticism that the group, still less than 18 months old, had been disappointingly slow to develop and gain its footing.
“We were still cutting our teeth on Washington politics when Gerber pulled the pacifier out from under us,” he said. “Don’t they understand that we had to learn to crawl before we could run?”
Jo Jo said the PAC faced an uphill battle because of a widespread misconception that American babies “have it pretty good already.”
“All we were trying to do was protect our God-given rights,” he said, “but if we complained about anything at all we were painted as a bunch of cry… a bunch of malcontents.”

Silly Hat Day? What does that have to do with eating dead babies?

so, checked the exhaust of your car for any holes lately?

Just a suggestion.

I drive a new rental car every week, so I suppose I could check this morning's fresh rental. Anything in particular spark your alarm?

As long as we're asking outrageous questions... here's one I'm curious about (from a legal standpoint)... as horrible as it was, in situations (historically, or in some weird nation) where rape was not a crime ... (for example, when it was not a crime to rape one's wife)... how much... er, "defense" was permissible on the part of the victim? Could the victim be charged with assault and battery if they fought off the rapist?

"Your honor, there I was, forcing my wife to have sex with me, when suddenly she stabbed me in the leg! I demand full prosecution!"
Well, if a society treats women like property, property can't be prosecuted, can it? Presumably, the husband would be able to give whatever punishment he wants.

Can't expectant rabbits reabsorb their embryos?
I read that humans can as well, and in fact, as many as 20% of human pregnancies are originally multiple.

Why would you eat fetuses?

Would you eat unfertilized ovaries?
What exactly is a fertilized ovary?

Besides chicken embryos, what "steaks of the unborn" grace your table?

Why don't we write to the big business handlers of unborn animal meat products and get their take on human fetus processing, specifically... will it become an option in the future when overpopulation and food shortage trendlines cross?

Supposedly the United States is the land of the free, but it doesn't feel all that free.

Why is it illegal to eat human babies? I mean, it's perfectly legal to eat baby chickens. And eggs, for that matter. Why can't we head on over to the local planned parenthood and pick up some abortus for breakfast?

Freedom my derriere...

I couldn't do anything but support such a modest proposal.

No one seems to have mentioned the side note. Why can't we buy and eat abortus? I can't think of a specific reason.

Strangely, there is a very good reason not to, which was touched on before, but not covered adequately. BSE (mad cow disease) is a result of cannibalistic feeding of cow parts to cattle. There is considerable evidence to show that the same thing happens in humans with a disease which is very similar to vCJD, the human equivalent of BSE, the actual CJD itself. Link

That very good reason has no bearing at all on the illegality of eating babies, but now that we do know it, I suspect it'll make reversal of the law harder.

Given that the problem seems to be brain/spinal based, I think we can do a deal for amputated limbs, but will have to leave the foetuses off the menu.

I hear there's a place in Saudi Arabia which is very good for fresh limbs. You could do hands like rack of lamb. Stringy, but satisfying.

Didn't someone actually eat a placenta on TV?
I didn't see it, but I vaguely recall reading about it somewhere.
Apparantly the placenta has the same DNA as the baby.

Eating placenta isn't as rare as you might expect.

Some people also take them home and put them in the ground and plant a tree on top of it. My wife left our ones at the hospital.

I didn't even want to cut the umbilical cord for my kids. I was in the room with teh wife, but I tried to avoid looking at anything like the afterbirth or holding the baby until the nurse toweled it off.

I'm similarly squeamish. I don't like to be near newborns until they're at least nineteen years old. Before that, they're all covered in fluids and stuff. Ick.
