reading another thread "Ding, Dong...", I was alerted to the fact that there was an interview of Hitchens on Anderson Cooper.

I thought it was actually quite good. Cooper let Hitchens speak his mind without undue interuptions and was very polite. It is far from the theater of O'Reiley and his nonsense.

One interesting point was hitchens claim that he'd "miss religion" if it were gone. I would be interested to know what he would miss about it, if it was the cultural influences, the whipping post it serves for him, or something else.

I think that what Hitchens is saying is that it's so much in the fabric of our society that it would leave a void. But in any case, it's a purely academic consideration, since Hitchens in no way thinks that religion is going away.

Hitchens on Hannity and Colmes

If you missed him on H&C you really missed something. They had him on then implied that his opinions were mean, and insulting to the family. About halfway through the interview Hitchens was visibly preterbed and got really snarky with both hosts. It was the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Towards the end he went after Mr. Reed making a snarky jest when he called Jerry a Dr. and made a crack as the interview ended that if you gave Falwell an enema he could be buried in a matchbook. Funny:D

I read the transcript of the Falwell stuff. I don't know why he's so sure Falwell didn't believe what he preached. He didn't offer any evidence. Though I don't blame him for that, given that it was a TV segment, I'd like to hear his reasons. People sincerely believe stuff that's far more absurd and bizarre than Falwell's brand of Christianity (hard to believe, but it's true). Why suppose Falwell didn't believe this stuff? Lots of people do.

If someone claims to believe certain things I think it is prudent to take them at their word. The only way for Hitchens to prove Falwell's beliefs would be to use lie-detection technology that doesn't exist yet.

And if he didn't believe? Well then he's a liar and a hypocrite.

He definitely doesn't do much to endear people to his view, but it was funny.

Daily show had used the clip of him telling hannity, "you've taken all of my time with your rather long unlettered question."

my husband was very impressed and had never heard him speak at TAM.

My husband said, "I have a feeling there is a glass with some Scotch in it just off camera, but I like what he's saying."
