Mr Grant voluntarily presented himself at Notting Hill police station on Wednesday, ...

In the movie Notting Hill, Grant is a bookshop owner who lives in Notting Hill and has photographers camped outside his door because a movie star is hiding out in his apartment flat.

Cosmic.

Crazy Brits. Everyone knows the food is to be removed from the tub before being thrown.

When I first heard that Hugh Grant was being held in a bean attack I pictured him finishing up a traditional English breakfast than being trapped in an elevator (er, lift) with an unfortunate photographer (who, in the movie, will also be pregnant and about to go into labor).

I find the baked beans allegation a bit suspect. I bet it was a mixed bean salad. You know the sort of thing, like this:

Why would he have a container of baked beans?

[laughing]

I have no idea, but I cited a source (flawed though it may be). I'm curious to know your theories, though.

:D

Well, around these parts, it would mean he was toting takeaway from a (hopefully) decent Barbecue place (say Brothers and Sisters just off Colonial) and wanted them to mix with the pulled pork and extra hot sauce. Over there, I have no idea.:D

WTF is up with all this celebrity gossip? Chuck Norris, Rosie O'Donnell, Alec Baldwin, Richard Gere and now Hugh Freakin' rant. You people. All this stupid ******** from you *********** mother****ers.

It's got nothing to do with celebrity gossip. I was pointing out that the story was reported as "alleged" but accompanied by photos of the person doing the very thing the media isn't allow to say he definitely did. I'd have posted the same thing if it was about Joe Bloggs from Nantwich, although in that case it would have been unlikely to be headline news. If you don't like it, don't read the thread. And don't insult me for starting a thread about a Hugh Grant story, I don't appreciate being called names even in asterisks.

If a news organization is covering it, then I think it qualifies as a "current event."

Regarding the OP, as a general rule the BBC is correct to use the word allegedly even in cases like this. How can you be sure that the man in the photo is actually Hugh Grant? CYA is the word.

Well even taking that into account they could have phrased it differently, say "Hugh Grant has been arrested on charges of...". It's factually true so you're covered from litigation, and it doesn't sound so ridicilous.

Sticking "alleged" in front of things doesn't work as a defense against libel suits, but bad journalism persists in believing it does. It probably has more to do with not being caught out by hoaxes and errors and then lambasted by all the competitors for inaccuracy...which of course happens anyway.

I agree. But it was the repeated use of it juxtaposed with the photos of him actually doing it that made me giggle. I hope whoever put the article together did it with a suitable smirk of irony on their face. I've never seen such a blatant PWNING before :D
