Hugh Grant...allegedly.

Sticking "alleged" in front of things doesn't work as a defense against libel suits, but bad journalism persists in believing it does. It probably has more to do with not being caught out by hoaxes and errors and then lambasted by all the competitors for inaccuracy...which of course happens anyway.
I found that doubtful to be honest. Now clearly it doesn't work as a blanket defence for anything, say "Hugh Grant allegedly molested, killed and ate 5 little girls" because there is no credible accusation about such things against him. On the other hand if a credible accusation did exist, such as in this case, I would think it would work as a defence. If such defences did not work, it would be borderline impossible to report about any trials.
