:con2: So global dimming has been masking global warming (greenhouse effect)...And humanity jumps on its high horse and attempts to reduce pollutants in the atmosphere, less particles attracting water molecules..less sunlight reflection and more chance of millenia of natural cloud formation paths returning to normal parameters. Have I got this right.... However due to the impact of humanity ( I take refuge in ignorance..okay..) for once actually having a positive anti -pollutant affect and successfully reducing particle emissions, means global warming has a more powerful effect on the planet and the earth is getting hotter more quickly with obvious devasting consequences is all because some one forgot to reduce the carbon emmissions in environmentally designed catalytic converters and industrial chimmney dampers/scrubbers. Anyone care to elucidate??

Does this mean we're only going to be hearing this junk for another thirty years?
No this is a thread that is truly not happening, no decent response, entirely my fault and I apologise sincerely for not posing the theme in a more stimulating manner....

Sort of like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound, isn't it?

Well, it was nice knowing you all.

I guess the evangelicals where right. I'm going to church.

ETA: To stave off accusations of fallacy. I'm not making an argument here.

Well, if you're into a little light reading, you might download this PDF: Winning The Oil Game. It tells about dealing with one part of the problem. The RMI Site also has this web page on things you can do: Home Resource Efficiency.

Thanks again Solitaire, I did peruse the recommended reading, can't say I read it all ( it was a tad dull)and I feel the solution is must be more than that. Nothing is as simple as it seems, the global warming scaremongering occured because humanity (the devilish rascals) crusaded on about global dimming with out thinking about other factors.Does no-one else consider this topic as frightening or am I a scaredy cat. Of course it doesn't do to become extremist about these kind of topics but does it not warrant more serious consideration.??

Why "And humanity jumps on its high horse and attempts to reduce pollutants in the atmosphere"? If you want to see what happens when you don't reduce the pollutants, just go to Bankok.

The "high horse" was the assumption that we could make all these technological advances without considering the possibility of side effects.

? Technological advances? Oh Christ. If we made any mistakes it was burning too much fossil fuel and doing too little to conserve. There is no reason to think that we couldn't advance technologically and act to reduce green house gases.

I didn't say technological advances were inherently bad, just that when you have one, don't be surprised if there are side effects. Kind of like drugs. You can treat many medical conditions, but all drugs have side effects too. Don't expect one with without the other.

AUP, with all due respect you did not address the substance of my post. Yes, technological advances often come with side effects. That fact really isn't significant. The problem, in the long run, isn't the advances it's that we did not take the warnings seriously and we failed to make imporant changes in our behavior and failed to make important decisions that could have made a difference. If we had conserved more, built more efficent cars, used public transportation, etc., we could have made a difference. There is no reason to believe that we couldn't have most if not all of our technological advances and made significant reductions in green house gases.

There is still time and hopefully due to our technical abilities we will be able to generate new innovations which would regress the global warming scenario..as long as we consider the possible affects on extraneous variables this time! Statoil are now funnelling carbon gas waste under the ocean floor! But I wonder what the long term affects will be? Additionally this appears to be a short term function as space there must be limited, giving us a waste depository of a couple of hundred years only.

Let's reverse global warming!

[Gene Wilder Willy Wonka To An Errant Child Voice]No. Don't. Stop. [/Wonka]

If you go too far, you'll induce an ice age, thanks. You're starting to endanger my life now.

Ice age ...global warming...global dimming.....
Where do we take a stand and when will all of the globe participate?
