very simple question....

pros [lol] ;

outreach possible with some of the most vulnerable members of society - re drug addiction, abuse, counselling, job help, benefits etc.

Removing women from the street where they're most vulnerable

regulation of trade can prevent the spread of STDs - regular health checks for workers etc.

possible arguments for cons

people will regard prostitution as more socially acceptable

prostitution is exploitative and should not be condoned through legality

"I wouldn't want my daughter to be a prostitute!"

really, personally this seems like a slam dunk in favour of legalisation....

what do you reckon?

Yes.

It would allow the collection of a head tax. ;) That might retire the deficit.

(See XVI th amendment)

No. And neither should marijuana. Or homosexuality. Or, ummm, masturbation. Or apple pie. Motherhood is right out.

Did I miss anything?

right, our laws are a mess.....

Prostitution - exchanging participation in sexual activities for money or other goods - has always been legal in the UK. It's actually arguably more acceptable to charge for your sexual skills than your cooking or brewing skills - you need a certificate or licence for the latter two! However, many of the activities that prostitution often involve are illegal.

The laws on working on the street have become 'gender neutral'. Anyone, male or female, on the street (or on a balcony or in a window) can be found guilty of soliciting for the purpose of prostitution.

Streetwork is one of the few areas where clients of adult workers can get into trouble too - anyone kerb-crawling (approaching other people from or near a vehicle they've just got out of for the purpose of prostitution) is particularly at risk, not least as their vehicle can now be seized.

In fact it is illegal in general to persistently solicit anyone on the street for the purposes of prostitution, but this is much less fequently prosecuted, not least because if they are in fact prostitutes, they don't count for this law!

Working alone indoors, or for an agency or in a brothel

All remain legal. Provided the worker is at least 18, buying sex from them is also legal.

'Pimping', running an agency or brothel

All remain illegal.

But controlling another adult's prostitution is now only illegal if you gain from it (or know that someone else does). Looked at another way, gaining from someone else's prostitution is now legal: it's the control for gain that's illegal.

So sex workers' families should now be free of the risk of being charged with "living on the earnings of prostitution", however owners of escort agencies and brothels as well as 'pimps' will still be at risk.

In addition, it is specifically illegal to own or run a 'disorderly house' or brothel - anywhere more than one woman or man resorts to for non-marital sex. As this doesn't necessarily have to be at the same time, or involve sexual intercouse or, indeed, any payment, a very wide range of places are therefore 'brothels', including many hotels. (Remember that it's legal to be a sex worker at a brothel provided you don't assist in its management.)

The penalties for owning or running a brothel involving prostitution have been increased.

there should be legalisation [and more importantly stingent regulation] of the prostitution industry across the board....the current ad-hoc approach is pretty lamentable....

Penn and Teller had a Bulls Hit episode about this. There are several problems with prostitution. Crime, disease, drugs, taking advantage of women and general lack of control. But all of these things are problems only because it is illegal. Clean, inspected, lawful whorehouses would assure that disease is minimized, criminals were excluded (as well as laws are able to exclude criminals), women would be paid more fairly, and control in general would be supervised and regulated.

Other problems such as home-wrecking and juvenile delinquency are not really related to whether or not prostitution is legal. It could even be argued that they would be less of a problem if prostitution were safer for "runaway girls" and for the poor wife who might get a disease from her philandering husband.

C'mon folks, there is a reason they call it "the world's oldest profession." It is going to exist no matter what you do, so the best thing you can do is try to minimize its negative effects.

If prostitution was legal then it would be easier (but not impossible) to keep under 18s out of it.

I've always wondered why it was ok for me to use one part of my body (my hands let's say) to make money but not ok to use another part of my body (my genitals) for the same purpose.

Yes prostitution should be legalized and police should be forced to protect prostitutes as well as they do any other member of society. Prostitutes are legitimate business people.

your pros far outweigh your cons. One pro that I see is that there will be fewer people in prisons to help the overcrowding. and less people to easily murder (like they will more likely get caught if a murder occurs, they cant just pick up a prostitute anymore). there will be less rape too i think.

Prostitutes are legitimate business people.

Indeed. I would like to see prostitution become part to the service industry, much like cleaning and termite inspection. In fact, I can even see a company sub-contracting a prostitution firm to "service" their employees. Right now, my company hires a car care company to clean, detail and make minor repairs on their employees' cars while they are in the parking deck. Why not prostitutes? Well, maybe not in the parking deck...

I'm sick of those damn "Planet X" options. Where did they come from to begin with? Anyone who votes on them is an idiot.

I would consider that more a pro than a con.

Of course prostitution is already legal as long as payment is not made in cash and there's really no binding contract for the payee to deliver. Payment may be made in the form of dinner, shows, wedding rings, etc. Once payment has been made the payee is free to renege on the deal yet still keep the payment.

However experence suggests that once you do legalise it you get a jump in people trafficing and many brothels continue to operate illegaly.

Anyone who does not now and again use the Planet X option is an easily-led-by-the-nose fool.

Dustin, here is a deposit in your clue bank: the Planet X option is a funny way of saying "none of the above."

On Planet X, everyone is born with a clue.

No. The "Planet X" option is for people who still think it's witty or cute to actually vote for that. I frequently see "none of the above" and "Planet X" on the same poll.

I try to be helpful.

And this is the thanks I get.

I would have to say I am more for legalizing prostitution than I am for legalizing the use of pot.
