Kent Hovind gets 10 years

Oooo! I'll take three! :D

Incidentally, Gene, I'm waiting (we're waiting) for your own words to describe Hovind's flagrant misrepresentation of play-documents from a backwoods word-processing house as the genuine articles, the purpose being to fleece his woebegotten flock of ignorants of their worldly wealth. OMG! Thanks for this, I saw it nowhere in the news!

Damn, I feel so sorry for him. He was always very pleasant and came off as very likeable and made for a great Ali G segment once.

Just spotted something. This horrible article by the Dakota Voice (a Christian paper http://www.dakotavoice.com/About.html) is completely missing any hint of scientific understanding and on Kent's son, Eric Hovind it says:

Source: http://www.dakotavoice.com/200605/20060507_1.html

Anyone know what "college" Eric Hovind claims to have completed? Was it Kent's alma mater (the degree mill in Colorado) or was it simply Eric took the elder's "college seminars" (the childish and ill-informed DVDs and booklets Hovind sells)? Or maybe Eric is just a liar?

I'm going to answer my own question in case some people would like to know.
According to a brochure taken from the skepchick website:
n120800102_33062377_9863.jpg

Eric Hovind graduated from the Pensacola Christian Academy and Jackson Hole Bible College.

What this means is Eric completed kindergarten through high school at Pensacola Christian Academy. More laughable is completing Jackson Hole Bible College, which is a one year school that isn't even accredited and the list of professors ( http://www.jhbc.edu/faculty.html ), including Ken Ham from Answers in Genesis, doesn't have a single teacher based in the same state as the school.

On a side note, the website refers to Ken Ham as Dr. Ken Ham, and he is certainly not a doctor. Falwell's Liberty University gave Ham an honorary doctorate and that does not qualify him to use the title.

You can read from Jackson Hole Bible College: http://www.jhbc.edu/ ("one-year, in depth study of the scriptures")
According to the US Department of Education it is not accredited: http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/

Regarding Eric Hovind's "education," Kent Hovind wrote:

While my son was in Jackson Hole Bible College one of his teachers began teaching a modified version of the gap theory/day-age theory. My son was torn up by the confusion it caused in his mind so I wrote this letter to help him see the subject clearly.
...
...As I was preaching today on my seminar 1B about the gap theory and the ruin restoration theory, I was stuck once again by the importance on the subject and was nearly overwhelmed with anguish by the thought that I have sent my son off to school to study to join my ministry team only to have him taught something I am so vehemently against...

Had I known that the school there had a teacher that taught the ruin restoration theory I would never have suggested that you or anyone else go there. I know how impressionable young minds are and how difficult it is to undo damage that has been done by false teaching...

Your teacher has the distinct advantage of being with you many hours whereas I can only try to convince you on occasion by phone or letters. I refuse to accept mail or e-mail debates with evolutionists because while they tie up hours of my time I could be reaching a dozen others who want to hear with the truth. I normally would not take time to write a letter such as this but you are my son and I love you with all my heart. Two cannot walk together unless they be agreed. I will not let one teacher take my son from me or erect a wall of separation between us. Please consider these verses from my perspective as I have tried to do from your teacher's perspective.

The teacher made a big deal out of the difference between the words "created" and "made" used in the Bible. He told you this was proof of a pre-Adamite civilization. Comparing the following verses will clearly demonstrate he is wrong. The words are used interchangeably all throughout the Bible.

So Hovind doesn't even agree with the creationists at his son's unaccredited school.

Easy. All Kent has to do is tell Eric that "they're only theories".

Also, from the link:

Do these people even comprehend that the babble has been translated many, many times and an English translation can't be used to argue semantics? Ah, the Church of High Stupidity is alive and well.

Hello Zep,

For the most part I'm finished with this thread. I didn't think the point I made of the blatant hypocrisy of sceptics could be more forcibly made than it was with this quote....

Quite the contrary. Reason demands that legal authority based on reason and evidence should be respected, but it's perfectly legitimate to reject legal "authority" based on nothing of the sort.

When someone picks and chooses which laws they respect and abide by, that is a clear statement they think they’re above the law. That point has been further driven home by the discussion about ...

There is nothing much unusual about the 197-page dissertation Marcus R. Ross submitted in December to complete his doctoral degree in geosciences here at the University of Rhode Island.

...elsewhere on the forum. It seems that you're damned if you get a 'real' degree and you're damned if you don't from the sceptics perspective. They fascistly insist you agree with them or they'll call you names. lol.

Gene

No hypocrisy. Either you accept scientific fact or you don't. Many of those who accept science and teach it have accredited degrees, but some have accredited degrees, and pick and choose according to religion what to believe in science.

Then there are others like the Hovinds that get meaningless "degrees" from institutions that lack proper instructors.

Hello Zep,

You really are pathetic, gene! Why did you wait this long to resume your failed argument? It's been beaten thoroughly and left in ashes. Did you think we would all forget? Never assume others are as stupid as you are.

They fascistly insist you agree with them or they'll call you names. lol.

That's not even a word. lol.

Answer the question or begone. Better yet, just be gone.

Of course it does. Luke 6:45

Gene, here's the quote you tried to hide in white-on-white.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Relevance? What does this have to do with evil prevailing? From what I see it's pretty much self-evident tripe. Doesn't your god have more worthwhile things to do than write meaningless prose?

See what he posted about condoms and HIV. AgingYoung is pushing ignorance on to people. Science be damned! He's got evangelical authors.

Actually, Questioninggeller, you either accept the law and abide by it or all law is meaningless. In another thread there is a discussion about biblical prophecy being fulfilled and what evidence is there of that. This thread ties in perfectly with that one. The prophecy is in regards to the increased lawlessness in the end times.

Now consider most people rationalize their behavior. I've heard that people like Jessie James or Al Capone considered themselves normal. They rationalized their acts. They self-justified them.

That very normal yet self-justification is relevant in this regard: People that imagine they are intellectually capable of parsing law to decide which are acceptable and which aren't have the media of the internet to spread their views. They present persuasive arguments as to why they are right.

Now here is the downside of that reasoning. People that imagine they have the protection of law understanding where the boundaries are find themselves in a very precarious situation. They really can't know what the limits are. They can't rightly judge what to do or not do. This is chaos.

The perspective of picking and choosing which laws are valid creates a situation of anarchy that utterly destroys people that are looking to this same law for their justification. If anyone can decide which laws are right or wrong and act accordingly, they put the ones that look to the law to set boundaries at a severe disadvantage. This is not just.

Questioninggeller,

That is irrelevant to the point at hand but it does point to the means to which you'd stoop to dismiss the idea. Too funny.

If you'd like to make a point to me I'd have to say you're probably wasting your time. If your sole point is to marginalize me then I'd have to say carry on. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

Gene

slimething,

There are two times I can read your stupidity. One is when someone quotes you and the other is when I'm not logged on. This time you were quoted.

Now if you were 1/2 as intelligent as you imagine you are you wouldn't waste your time.

Perhaps you should apply your point to the Hovinds' blatant and illegal attempts to do exactly this - think they’re above the law. First remove the log from your own eye...isn't that how it starts?

We are talking about Kent Hovind's play-time diploma that he bought from some backyard shyster that confers on him the title of "Doctor". The reality is that the "diploma" is not worth the paper it is ink-jetted on, and Kent's doctorate is as completely fake as he is. His doctoral thesis (available online if you but search for it), such as it is, would score him a good solid E or F as a 5th grade essay.

In summary, nothing about this man is genuine. Fake qualifications, faked work history, faked tax records...even an utterly faked attitude to his employees and his flock. Perhaps you might like to point out anything genuine about him - I can see only one thing: genuine crook.

*reference to the aforementioned name calling. It's so kind of you to be interested in 'protecting' them there ignorants.
Answer me this: Where did all the money go that they gave Hovind? Not one red cent went to any charity or "good deeds". So where did it go?

Yes, thank you. I saw it just before returning here. Amazing that even this lackwit would think that the latex protection that surgeons use against bacteria and viruses and chemists use against solvents (about a thousand times smaller than a virus) will allow HIV through. Mainly because HIV is a punishment from his all-merciful and loving god, I guess. :boggled:
