Foley...its the Democrats fault...

Ok this is totally heresay, so take it with a grain of salt, but my brother-in-law works for the graphics department at FOX, and he says that he and all his co-workers are a bunch of liberals.

Not specifically because of that, but because that's a good example of how even FOX news is not monolithic... I suspect this is either an error or a conspiracy of one.

Once it is an error.
Twice it is just sloppy.
Three times becomes a pattern....maybe a pattern of wishful thinking for Fox editors, but a pattern.

Of it wasn't a mistake. If anything, Since the truth is against them (the right wing) at this point - I bet that we'll see more of these blatant lies in the weeks ahead.

If there was a D after Foley's name, he would probably be getting re-elected.
On July 14, 1983 the House Ethics Committee concluded that Rep. Dan Crane (R-Ill.) and Rep. Gerry Studds (D-Mass.) had engaged in sexual relationships with minors, specifically 17-year-old congressional pages. In Crane's case, it was a 1980 relationship with a female page and in Studds's case, it was a 1973 relationship with a male page. Both representatives immediately pleaded guilty to the charges and the committee decided to simply reprimand the two.

However, Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) demanded their expulsion. On July 20, 1983, the House voted for censure, the first time that censure had been imposed for sexual misconduct. Crane, who subsequently apologized for his transgression, lost his bid for reelection in 1984.

Studds, however, stood by the facts of the case and refused to apologize for his behavior, and even turned his back and ignored the censure being read to him. He called a press conference with the former page, in which both stated that the young man was legal and consenting. Studds did not break any U.S. laws for that time, in what he and page called a "private relationship."[1] He continued to be reelected until his retirement in 1996.[2]
1983 Congressional page sex scandal

I think it is safe to say that the tolerance of child abuse has certainly gone down in the last 20 years. That, in my opinion, is a good thing.

There's no way Studds gets away with that today. Then again, there is no way that Thomas Jefferson gets away with owning slaves today, either.

Is it strange that whenever I see Foley's name, I think of a catheter?

Me too! I've been getting a chuckle out of CNN's graphic headlines - the one for this fiasco is usually entitled, "Foley Fallout," which brings to mind a vigorous re-catheterization. OUCH!

Katana mentioned the headline regarding Condy Rice's angry answer to Clinton's assertions was, "Steamed Rice." I'm sure someone at CNN has a finely-tuned sense of humor - it sure beats Faux News subliminally connecting Foley to the Democrats. :)

"But in fairness to the Republicans, let me just throw this out: who invented the Internet? That's right, Al Gore, a Democrat. If it wasn't for him, none of this would have happened. Run with it, Fox News!"
---Jimmy Kimmel

How long before we see this argument as a real talking point from the RNC?
;)

On a semi-related topic and this being the first Foley thread I came across, I'll ask:

Does anyone have a source for the transcript of the released IM's and/or emails?

A local radio station did some role-playing with personalities reading transcripts of some of the IMs. Question: How did this guy manage to get all these IM handles? Is it the most obvious explanation: He asked and they gave it to him? And are these transcripts coming from the former-pages which they copy/pasted and saved?

Also, just to repeat what others have said: I highly doubt Fox purposely put a D in front of his name, etc. They're intellectually lazy, incompetent ideologues -- much like the Bush administration.

I suspect that the graphic identifying Foley as a D rather than an R was likely saved in the Character Generator and simply recalled as needed. It does remind me of the time CNN planted a great big X over Cheney's face. Another glitch that alarmed us all.

That was mentioned in another thread. It wasn't a glitch; it was some lone guy at CNN making a statement. He was promptly fired.

Well, Fox News is pretty fair and balanced, I'm sure we'll see some firings over this oversight. ;)

Well, I just heard Rush Limbaugh SUGGEST that these IMs were cut and pasted, and may not contain what their true intentions were. His logic is that AIM conversations can only be saved by cut and pasting the snippets into a word processing program. At least that's what his "windows people" tell him. Besides, why would anyone have the conversation log turned on anyways?

The only thing that could make this funnier is if the parents of one of the kids came out and said "We log our son's AIM to protect him against perverts. We love our kids.".

Love this little mix-up (if that what it was!) Fox News graphic identifying Foley as a D....I suppose once you come out as a potential child molester, you must be a D moving on quickly to abettor of terrorism...at least in Fox's eyes... ;)

Actually, unless my memory is way off, Republicans are more likely to be turning the pages and such. Democrats tend more to adult females they are not married to. I am not positing either of these as absolute but I believe if you go back looking for scandals over the last 50-60 years it plays out that way.:D
