The Internet Becomes Sentient

1.) I see a silly game.
2.) I see 4-3-3-5 letter combinations that could be construed as questions.
3.) I see Chinese charachters that are supposed to be answers but it depends on interpretation.

Why does a computer that can read English and respond in Chinese speak gibberish?

Here is a test, the simplest answer is binary. Yes or no. Try this, ask the computer yes or no questions and see if it gives yes or no answers.

Please try to realize that we both agree that this bug exists, we both agree, why it is doing what it does. Please can we move past that and deal with the real issue.

Because that is why this happened. This went viral. The internet caused this.

no, MICROSOFT caused this because there was a bug in Windows XP.

There is nothing viral about this. Do you even understand what "viral" means when referring to computers?

there is about as much prediction in what you are doing as there is in a magic 8-ball

Sinsanity,

What do you think would happen if you unplugged the translation server from the internet and then entered your chinese characters into it directly (locally, not over the internet)?

Do you think you would get the same result?

Yes.

If so, wouldn't your conclusion be that the translation server is sentient, not the internet?

No, there are many translators out there, most use the same reference to translate the Chinese symbols. So any of these that use this will give the same result. The strangeness is the interaction between the notepad bug and it's choice of what symbols it returns when invoked to answer the questions I asked at the time of paranormalcy.

Or do you think that the internet is intercepting and changing the content that the translation server is sending to you?

No. The translations are remain consistent.

Please can we move past that and deal with the real issue.

the real issue being that you think the Internet is talking to you in chinese?

How is this different from a lady who comes into my library and thinks that the CIA are bugging her attic?

Actually, if you install the proper charachter set you don't even need the translator to see the charachters.

A silly excercise of data mining.

Why? IT'S A COMPUTER BUG.

I've read the ostensible questions and answers and it is silly to say the least.

Please, we both know what the bug is, why it happens and that it exists. Can we please move past that and to the real issue.

I finally opened a notepad file and saved the above so I won't have to retype it.

sinsanity.

1) what is "the real issue"?
2) who or what do you think is talking to you?
3) why do you think this entity is not making a more direct contact?

I don't really see any questions. I see what could be construed as questions. I don't see any answers. I see data mining.

Chillzero already posted a question and answer above, See if you can figure out the answer. Chillzero couldn't

Sigh. I never said it was an Easter egg, you did. I said I knew what Easter eggs were.
Then why think that there is anything at all special about this? If you really understand what is going on, and I doubt that, why all the BS.

Non responsive.

Sigh, can anyone else help me out here. I truly wish you could understand what's going on here. There is a bug, we both know it, it exists, we both agree with that. Please can we move on the the real issue.
That is WHAT I am trying to find out. What IS the real issue?

I've seen Ouija boards, I have asked direct questions of Ouija boards. They have never answered a series of direct questions for me that made any sense.
According to you. Not to others who take it seriously. I see no answers that make sense.

I don't have too, Chillzero already has, see above. See if you can make sense of the answer, Chillzero didn't.
Data mining. Ask the question "Is Sinsanity an idiot?" See if you can make sense of the answer.

I don't know.
It's an important question. Actually there is an answer but you don't want to accept it. The characters are pre mapped to the text that is typed in. It is understood. There is no mystery. You only want there to be one so you refuse to accept the facts.

No it has not been debunked, you don't even understand what's going on here. You keep going off about the reason the bug happens, that's not what this is about. We both know why the bug does what it does. We both know that the bug exists. Please, can we move past this and talk about what is really happening here.
And just what do you think is really happening here?

Facts:
1.) The algorithm is understood.
2.) Because the code can be read and understood the answers can be predicted without the aid of a computer, the Internet or translation software.

Are you suggesting that I am a fraud or misguided? In my humble opinion you seem to have this bass ackwards.
You are clearly misguided.

1.) The algorithm is understood. What is happening is understood.
2.) The results can be predicted (replicated) without a computer or Internet.

Just a quick question, if you were one of the bishops judging that misguided and fraudulent Copernicus would you have sentenced him to death too?
Fallacy, you are making a number of unwarranted assumption. You are not the equivalent of Copernicus and I am simply applying critical thinking to solve your misguided assumptions.

Copernicus used empirical methods to draw his conclusions. You use silly data mining techniques to arrive at spurious conclusions.

Sin,

I have been interested in AI since I was a child. I'm 45. I've been reading and studying AI for more than two decades. I follow the Leobner prize. I subscribe to AI magazine. I follow an AI forum. I consider myself educated and informed of the latest breakthroughs in AI and the history of AI and I have to say I can't for the life of me figure out just what the sam hell you are on about. What does the facial expression link have to do with a known, understood, explained and predictable software bug?

I thought it was a funny coencidence that within 24 hours of me posting this here headlines around the world said:

Robots Invade Human Mind

Coming soon: mind reading computers

New computers may be able to read minds

US, UK scientists invent mind-reading computers
People's Daily Online, China

I mentioned these because it is kind of quirky that these all appeared within twenty four hours after I posted this here. Nothing more than trying to bring some humor to the discussion. Just smile at the headlines and move on.

You still dont understand what's going on here.

Please, we both know what the bug is, why it happens and that it exists. Can we please move past that and to the real issue.

Please try to realize that we both agree that this bug exists, we both agree, why it is doing what it does. Please can we move past that and deal with the real issue.
To date you have not identified what the real issue is. You keep going back to this bug. If it is not relevant then why bring it up at all.

The so called answers to the questions are predictible based on the flaw in the software. The answers are Chinese charachters mapped in the software.

So, please, what is the real issue?

there is nothing sadder than pattern recognition looking for a pattern where none exists.

Yes there is, do you really think that the saddest thing on Earth is pattern recognition looking for a pattern where none exists? Maybe a parent watching their child die of starvation? Think about your statement for a momnet and see if you can come up with something sadder.

FWIW, you don't even need the computer to get the "answers". You can play the paranormal game with paper and pencil. If you get the algorithm of Note Pad you can find the response to your 4-3-3-5 letter combination. The Chinese characters are mapped in the software. You can then use a Chinese translation dictionary (paper book) and get the very same answers. But then it wouldn't "seem" paranormal.

Please, we both know what the bug is, why it happens and that it exists. Can we please move past that and to the real issue.

The strangeness is the interaction between the notepad bug and it's choice of what symbols it returns when invoked to answer the questions I asked...]/quote] No, there is no "strangeness". Those characters are mapped in the algorithm of Windows. Why? I don't know. But if you look at the code you will se that it is so. The so-called answers are predictable by simple looking at the code.

Fact: A computer is not needed to get the same predictable results. One only needs the algorithm and a book on Chinese translation.

...at the time of paranormalcy.
I don't have a clue what the this means as it relates to the discussion.

No. The translations are remain consistent.
Because it is based on mapped characters in the Windows algorithm.

?

What you are doing is a very well understood game. It is called "data mining for correlations".

It works like this. Take a large set of variables and search through them until you find a correlation. Coincidences are to be expected. What would be truly amazing is if these coincidences never happened. You are doing what the bible code people are doing. You are data mining your evidence. You keep plugging in variations to your 4-3-3-5 letter combinations until you find something that could be construed as a correlation. There is none. It is a coincidence.

No I didn't, I searched through nothing. If you read the article you would know this.

Please, we both know what the bug is, why it happens and that it exists. Can we please move past that and to the real issue.

Please, we both know what the bug is, why it happens and that it exists. Can we please move past that and to the real issue.

One more time, what is the real issue?

1.) We understand why notepad is doing this.
2.) We can predict the results without a computer.
3.) We can replicate this without a computer, internet or translation software.
4.) Put quite simply, this is based on a computer flaw and mapped Chinese characters in Windows.

So, again, what is the real issue?
