John Edward smackdown in Dallas

I got an extended response from Jody today and yes, his inbox floweth over. Apparently he's more concientious than I am as he seems to be replying to everyone. I told him about me being and atheist and Randall being a sub-Deacon at his Orthodox Church and that we're both big fans of Ole Anthony and the Trinity Foundation which publishes the "Wittenburg Door" that Jody alluded to above.
Mr. Dean checked out the StopKaz web site, and said that he subsequently informed the Trinity Foundation about her. :)

There is a mp3 of the interview available

The www has been removed so I can post the link

I just did as suggested but then I had a thought (I can smell rubber burning)
Can anyone let me know if I have just wasted JRF's time:confused:
I don't think they would view it as a waste of time. The people who run the foundation don't seem to have a lot of time to view the forum, so it may be a while before they notice stuff like this. Also, I believe they are filtering Randi's email while he is recovering, so you don't have to worry about flooding him with duplicate emails.

If this is an unedited performance, I'd love the chance to examine it line by line. (ETA -- I'll listen to it first. Rereading the above, perhaps someone has already created a transcript?)

I agree. I got a reply yesterday, very short and very nice. He says he is "humbled by the response" and it may have been overwhelming. I have a hard time replying if only 10 people email me in one day...... ;)

I also got an email from Jody saying the same thing.

My own little investigation of John Edward is what led me to JREF so anything to do with this fraud gets my attention. Jody is now on my "hero" list. Guy did his homework and was ready for all of Eddies responses.

Email sent, reply received. Thanks for the mp3 link up there, by the way.

Transcript

Rough (very) draft of a transcript of the mp3 file posted earlier. Let me know if there are any mistakes and I'll fix them. I freely admit that I paid more attention to Edward's stutters and stammers than I did Dean's. Sue me.

Damn, that man talks fast....

He also does not answer questions directly. (meaning JE...I did not listen, I read)

Thanks for the transcript.

This thread and Jody's interview have become a very big deal for me since I have been grousing for over a year now about how important it is to embrace skeptics of all religious backgrounds how two of the major players that made it happen and made us aware of this evisceration of Edward were devout Christians. My fellow atheists, there are skeptical allies everywhere, but sometimes we can turn of many from joining organizations like JREF or the "movement" as Girl6 put it by insisting on what amounts to intellectual Orthodoxy.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! If anyone has the time and inclination to do a double checked transcript with appropriate elipses for Edward's stuttering, that would be great. I'm going to transcribe tsg's for now.

The transcript is great. It shows what you can do against Edwards by doing some homework. It is also entertaining. My point, as it was earlier, is that this needs to be circulated far and wide...radio and TV people need to see that they can score "entertainment" points by going after people like Edwards and showing them to be fakes, as opposed to sucking up to them as "celebrities".

Jody did a fine job. Hopefully, he won't be the last. Someone should share theis with Larry King's producers!

My thoughts

Well, it wasn't the "you're a complete fraud and here's why" that I was hoping for, but it was a good skeptical interview. Jody had much more composure than I would be able to maintain and managed to ask Edward the hard questions (and letting him completely fail to answer them) without him getting pissed off and hanging up.

...the new owner of the house popped his head out and saw the cameras
and wanted to know what was going on. So this girl's husband
addressed the man and told him, you know, this girl was here, she was
in a fire, her family passed, she's a sole survivor of it and he
said, Oh my god, I've been looking for you. Brought her into the
house and she, for the first time in ten years was able to, um,
really find closure. He had a lot of her stuff in boxes, she had
nothing left from her family.

Oooooh, freaky. There's no way that could happen without the dead's intervention.

Jody: Well, in terms of ... I know your studio show ... two, three
hours in some cases and what comes out the other end is usually, what, an
hour long, a half hour long?

John: Oh no, actually it's the other way around, you know, we, we
sometimes out of a two or three hour taping were able to get like 17,
18 segments which would be like 17 or 18 shows.

I want to know exactly how he's getting 9 to 18 hours of television out of three hours of taping. That would be impressive.

John: You know, 'cause, I would only take ... You know, that was a big
misconception with "Crossing Over", they thought like I was in the studio
like Monday through Friday, I was on end trying to get like all this
great footage and the reality was I taped one ... one day a week, for
two hours amd all those, I mean we'd get two hundred shows out of one
day a week.

Ah, so, in other words, you're taping for two to three hours and getting 1/2 to 1 hour of show. Isn't that exactly what Jody asked you?

Jody: ... Is what you do cold reading?

John: Absolutely not. Um, one of the things that, you know, I crack up is when
you see the terminology of "cold reading", you know, it's, it's, it's
like, do you have this, or is there someone like this, and it's truly,
honestly, and, and, dude, no offense, but you should really, you
know, like, see what I do, I don't ask questions, I make statements
and I ask them to validate if what I'm saying is actually correct, so
there's a difference, um, and one reason why ....

Oh, now I see. Asking questions is cold reading. Making statements and asking if they are correct is talking to the dead. Hell, I can do that.

Jody: Many of the statements that you make are so generic that any
one could affirm what you just said.

John: No, not true. Not really true, and I'll tell you why. Because
if you have, you know, if you have ten people in a room, you know,
the reality is that you're going to have a lot of similarities, you
know it's like if you put ten people on and say does anybody know Mary
or does anybody know Joe, or somebody that has cancer, yeah, you're
going to have a lot of similarities, but when you have, you know, a
number of people in the room, and you point to a section in the room,
and say it's in this section, this is what I'm getting, does somebody
there understand that...

Ten people in a room, that's just guessing. A hundred people in a room but pick out twenty of them, that's talking to the dead.

Well, I'm convinced....

I don't ask questions, I make statements
and I ask them to validate if what I'm saying is actually correct, so
there's a difference, um, and one reason why ....

Just last night he had to ask his cameraman "Are you a dad?" before continuing on his reading on the only guy around who took the hook.

It's hard to believe that a whole recording crew and all the people that go with it would just show up at someone's house and start filming without having already talked to the owner and gotten his permission. This sounds so set-up.

Ah, so, in other words, you're taping for two to three hours and getting 1/2 to 1 hour of show. Isn't that exactly what Jody asked you?

That is not what John Edward is saying. He would record 4 or 5 hours and get a week's worth of Crossing Over shows out of it. This was verified by people who attended tapings on the tvtalkshows board.

There's no reason to doubt it. If you ever saw the shows and how weak they were, it's easy to see he did not edit it to only show strong hits. Saying that he was in contact with a middle aged woman's father was good enough for the believers without strong hits.

Toward the end, the show was pumped with lots of filler material that was recorded outside of a live audience environment.

So there is no reason to doubt that there wasn't heavy editing. In fact, watching the show with a skeptical eye and seeing just how incredibly weak a demonstration of cold reading it was only served to show just how powerful a desire and belief must be at work on the part of the audience for JE to succeed. His success is only due in part to his skill, but a large part is due to the desire to believe.
