<shrug> Let your imagination run free. Maybe it's just old-fashioned crime, like money laundering for gangsters. Maybe those 'girls' weren't girls. Whatever it is, when the chips are down, Trump consistently acts like someone completely in thrall to Russian compromat.

The curious thing is, if it ever turns out there really wasn't anything he was utterly desperate to avoid being revealed, the real puzzle will then be why the hell was he so supine with Putin?

I think the truth is more prosaic. Trump is not being blackmailed, because that suggests that otherwise he would be doing something good or noble or in his country’s interest if it wasn’t for the Kompromat. But frankly Trump is a ◊◊◊◊◊◊ person who is greedy and venal and unprincipled and doesn’t give a stuff about Americans or anyone else.

And no blackmail is likely to work because his supporters, anyone who is still with him, have no principles either. They are not sitting there wondering why he is sucking up to Putin. They buy into the insane propaganda that Putin is “waging a war on woke and all those feminists and transgenders etc…”.

You seem to be incorrectly assuming that those in question are patriots. Actions speak much louder than words, regardless, and the Republican Party is well known to rely heavily on using words to try to convince us that up is down and down is up.

Thanks. Just as a point of information, Renee DiResta is a lady rather than a gentleman. She is very involved in looking at disinformation campaigns, specifically those launched by Russia, so I think she has good credentials. I personally don’t have the technical knowledge to judge either way. However, I think the other bit of information that’s important is the level at which some of the claimed topics, such as AfD, did not change to any noticeable degree when looking at the stats as opposed to people’s intuitions about it.

Unfortunately AfD is a very popular party in Germany and presumably their voters voice their ideas online. So it is not as though all the traffic needs to come from Russia.

I'm assuredly not saying she was wrong. It might be possible that taking out the Yandex data centers had no effect overall on the bot output but that would be pretty shocking. It would kind of be implying that no Russian bot networks use any Russian infrastructure to do bot things. Yandex is the largest provider of services in Russia, but anything is possible. Nothing shocks me after 2024 if I'm being honest.
