It's a nice way to twist the knife.

Putin absolutely will not allow himself to appear to be obeying instructions from Trump. If he responds at all it will have to be in his own time, seemingly for his own reasons, and with some or other kind of small contrarian twist in order to appear to be a different plan from Trump's plan.
I suspect that contrarian twist will be something along the lines of "except that Russia will still be allowed to attack Ukrainian energy installations," or maybe...

BREAKING: Kyiv is now in a blackout with no water supply, after Kharkiv's CHP-5 thermal power plant was struck by Russia, breaking the US energy ceasefire hours after Trump announced it.

Russia has attacked a power plant in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv despite President Trump’s statement earlier Sunday that both sides had agreed to an "energy ceasefire," according to Ukrainian officials.

Trump's bootlickers will undoubtedly explain that the energy ceasefire concerned diesel fuel, not power plants, meaning that Russia didn't do anything wrong, and that if Ukraine keeps attacking refineries it will be them who are in breach of the ceasefire …

I see the Diesel deal as the same thing as the Rare Earth Deal Ukraine made with Trump: it's a trick to get him invested in aiding you.
Now that Putin has the deal, he feels free to attack infrastructure more brazenly, correctly assuming that Trump doesn't want to look like he got tricked

'Time for Ukraine to get new president,' says Trump after Zelensky condemns diesel deal.

Speaking as he left the White House on Saturday, Trump said the Ukrainian president "wants to make problems for the world" by continuing to authorise attacks on Russian refineries.

"He'd better damn well stop," Trump said before suggesting Ukraine should "get a new leader who can make a deal"...

"We said, 'you can do whatever you want to Russia, don't hit the refineries', because that's a world problem that's caused," he said.

"He could have made many deals and for some reason, he never does."

I bet Putin has already suggested the perfect person to replace Zelensky.

It cost Ukraine nothing (for now) to sign that rare earth deal, not the least since the deposit is in the Russian occupied area. And I bet that even for Trump it was a performative act, to prop up his image as the great deal-maker.

Rare earths are actually not very rare anyway. At one point the USA was producing most of that in the world. And it still has vast deposits itself. And even Elon was TECHNICALLY not lying when he said he could produce those himself... if you ignore the caveat below.

The problem is separating them, which produces very toxic waste. As in, some water with lots heavy metals in it, some even radioactive. (E.g., Uranium and Thorium.) The only reason China ended up with an almost monopoly is because nobody wants that in their back yard, not because of the deposits. I'm GUESSING that as a democratic nation, Ukraine probably doesn't want those plants in their country either, or won't for long. Well, China doesn't care if some kids downstream get sick after dumping it into a river. What are they gonna do? Complain to some government regulatory agency?

I'm sure Ukraine can let the USA build a mine and have all that ore they want. What is Trump gonna do with it? Ship it to China to have it processed? When China doesn't need it to keep their separation plants going, so you'd probably have to give it to them at a loss so it's cheaper than mining their own? Plus, give it a couple of years, and it's not even Trump's problem any more. Let the next president deal with it. And MAGA can rage if it's a Democrat president, for not making use of the great deal by the great dealmaker.

A lot of US natural resource exploitation policy seems to be based on, "why dig up our own back yard, when our neighbor is happy to dig up theirs? Besides, if they ever stop, we still have our backyard to fall back on."
Well, technically they don't want to deal with refining it, but same idea. But yeah, if they just wanted to dig it up and send it to China to refine, they don't need Ukraine, they already have one of the biggest deposits right in California. And it's a shorter route to ship it to China from the USA than from Ukraine. But it's also mind-bogglingly impractical anyway, since you'd need to ship hundreds of bulk cargo ships with the ore to China to get one full of the separated ones back, hence why they're not doing it already. You'd make a loss on the transport alone. Hence my calling it a performative act by Trump, and not costing Ukraine anything.
