It's more performative idiocy: pretending not to know how the legal system works, "taxi rank"'n'all.

But what I find more disturbing is the barely concealed implication that those who are "obviously guilty" or "don't stand for what we do" or whatever should be denied legal representation and defence.

Which is odd coming from the likes of the member for Innsmouth who is very fond of throwing legal heat at folk who use hurty words about him.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has said she has brought in lawyers to potentially challenge the government over local funding cuts, after a record council tax rise in one of her party's flagship local authorities.

She told BBC Newsnight the proposed 94% hike in Wandsworth, a south-west London borough run by the Tories, was "outrageous"

The UK's "dismal" record in selecting songs and acts for Eurovision is to be scrutinised by MPs.

The chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee, Dame Caroline Dinenage, said: "We want to get to the bottom of who chooses our entrant, on what basis and whether our dismal record of achievement in recent years [Sam Ryder to one side] is the result of bad song choice, weak performance... or something else"

It's expected that figures from the BBC, as well as music industry experts, will be called to give evidence to the committee of cross-party MPs at a hearing that will be held "over the coming months". The committee is also likely to receive relevant written submissions.

We pissed off everyone else in Europe with that whole Brexit fiasco. There, mystery solved. Now get back to work on the issues that actually matter.

And of course we have sent bad entries that's also why we haven't done well, send a good song and we would be in with a chance - Sam Ryder came 2nd in 2022 and would have won in a normal year, because it was a good song. One of the other reasons is that we don't treat them like pop songs and pop groups, most of the Eurovision countries will be doing heavy promotions of their song long before the contest.

Labour has won back a council seat in Walkley after a by-election triggered by the resignation of a Green Party councillor.

Hannah Cawley was elected after securing 2,315 votes, while the Green's candidate, Seb Van Bilsen Irias, came second with 1,249.
