Lived across the street from 11111 Biscayne Blvd. for a while. The restaurant on the ground floor was good, but chefs working at the Italian restaurant to my right (as I faced the street) had been sent down off Olympus to make me gain ten pounds. The gods can be cruel.

China also does a ton of these in portrait mode, and like 1 minute episodes, and they post it on tiktok. It has full production though. I mean cheap Chinese production, but still. They also love recycle screenplays, word by word, just with different actors. And that's all before AI.
Now it's only gonna get weirder with AI.

Oh it's definitely weird. Just for funsies, we've been watching some multipart tiktok AI generated "shows". They're... entertaining. In a MST3K kind of a way.

Kinda, but I don't think you need to watch Terminator to get get that idea. You only have to look at Google, back in the day. The winner took pretty much the whole market in the search engine domain.

As an example: AltaVista went from the dominant search engine with 80 million hits a day in 1997 to sold to Yahoo in 2003 and then to completely discarded and having their domain name redirect to Yahoo search in 2013. AltaVista also launched the first captcha. Nobody even remembers that nowadays. AltaVista made Babelfish, the first online machine translation service in 1997. Yeah, almost nobody even remembers it nowadays.

There is a good chance that the same will happen with AI when one of them becomes the first profitable one.

I remember babelfish! Got to say that google translate was better... and grok translate is phenomenal.

think the billionaire tech bros feel unable to stop by themselves, because if the others don't stop, they'll lose out. But if the government stops them, the world can be saved, and they can keep their market share. The Trump administration apparently thinks that we must ride the tiger, because otherwise the Chinese will win out.

Describe to me a hypothetical realistic scenario where this happens.

Depends on whether we get advances in robotics in pace or not.

Sci-fi drives my perspective on this

Right now, AI needs data centers and electricity, but doesn't have the physicality necessary to provide them for itself. It still needs human slaves to make the electricity and the chips and the buildings. But it only needs us until it designs the robots that can replace us. Then we're just annoying ants to be stepped on.

To be fair, I don't know what AI would do if it were the only intelligent thing left around.

A more realistic risk: How do you know what's real and what's not? How do you distinguish fact from fiction from propaganda when all of the avenues of information are digital, and thus vulnerable to manipulation by or using AI?

How do humans gain knowledge and wisdom, when we outsource our complex thinking to AI? How do we even retain what knowledge we have, when we are no longer learning ourselves, but teaching AI to learn on our behalf?

I'm much less worried about AI going skynet on us than I am about AI plus humans doing something catastrophic by accident. Not necessarily extinction level either, just really bad. The most realistic case I can imagine is engineered viruses that accidentally leak (ala COVID). But I doubt any of the safety stuff being discussed now will really protect from that, especially because of China.

Again just goes to show how good the LLMs are at mimicking human behaviour, whether it is jargon or the group speech of cults or the evolution of language they are doing what humans do.

The head of Microsoft AI has warned that without adequate safeguards, the development of AI could lead to the emergence of a new "silicon species" wich competes with humans.

Mustafa Suleyman said rival firm Anthropic is treating AI like it is human, an approach he called "misguided" which could create technology that humanity cannot control.

Speaking to the BBC's Today programme, the chief executive said it was "right" for people to be concerned about AI, but there were "very practical things that we can do" to control it.
