Historical Mysteries

Except they didn't say it was a lion back then. They said it was some kind of gigantic, muscular wolf, that didn't behave anything like a wolf does. The hypothesis that it better matches a male lion without a mane is quite modern, and based on contemporary descriptions. Because, yeah, some people saw it and lived to write about it. We're also talking about mid 18th century, not about what some dark ages monk painted. They already HAD wolves, tigers and lions in menageries.

Or a rabid wolf, or one that had become used to humans, perhaps? People are dreadful eye witnesses, anyway.

I know that the lovely painting i posted was far earlier, but it's too good not to post, so I took advantage of your thread, sorry :xtongue

I love mediaeval paintings of animals, especially of ones the artists have only heard about, but never seen!
That's not entirely surprising to me, given your posts here.

Oh, medieval and ancient cryptids are a right barrel of laughs. For example, they thought cotton (which came from abroad) actually came from a plant growing a sheep kinda fruit, and actually painted that in several different manuscripts :P

And we haven't even mentioned Aristoteles and his natural science yet! (Which, like the curate's egg, is excellent in parts, but also hilarious.)

One of my favourites is the dog-headed people, Jesus even went to visit with them:

Visit them? St Christopher even carried Jesus on his shoulders. Christopher = Christ Carrier. And he was apparently some kind of wolfman according to classical sources. And somewhere between 5.33 and 6.28 metres tall, depending on which cubit size you believe was used. Note that I'm not talking feet, but metres. Multiply that by 3.28 to get the size in feet, ya imperial bastards. So yeah, he was mech warrior sized.

But did he have two penises? Or penes, to re-open that argument....

Anyway, historical mysteries; Krete, the Minoan civilization, the labrys and Linear A.
