Personally I've never agreed with moving the centre of the world away from Jerusalem...
Or Rome.
For me, it will always be Uruk.

What do you think GPS does?
It replaces the daily position fix with a Sextant.
Don't conflate GPS with digital charting.
They are separate things.
For me, it will always be Uruk.
In which case the centre will be more Uruk Hai, than Uruk.In this age of digital mapping Trump can write an executive order saying that all maps must be centered on wherever he is at the time.
Don't give him ideas, please. In this age of digital mapping Trump can write an executive order saying that all maps must be centered on wherever he is at the time.
It fell under geography when I was in secondary school - so been around for at least 5 decades."Social geography"? Sounds like something invented to pacify a particular population.
No, no, no. The omphalos is at Delphi. Zeus figured it out using an experiment! He set two eagles at opposite ends of the earth and had them fly towards each other. Where they met must be the center! Sure, he assumed they flew the same speed constantly, and in a straight line, and failed to notice a sphere doesn't actually have ends, but apart from that it was a very good experiment. Bless his heart, he was doing his very best.Or Rome.
He also did not account for the fact that each eagle could only cover half the remaining distance at any given point in the exercise.Bless his heart, he was doing his very best.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if @Emily's Cat hasn't used a paper map in decades, andI'm legitimately surprised that there are 167 posts on this. From people who use the internet regularly, and who probably haven't used a paper map in decades.
I always use a paper map when tramping in the hills, or when sailing. Unlike GPS there's no risk of Russian jamming or battery failure. Electronic charts with GPS are OK, particularly to see if you are drifting off your planned heading.
minor point - I believe Emily's Cat is male.Russia. North Korea.
It wouldn't surprise me one bit if @Emily's Cat hasn't used a paper map in decades, and her generalization of that personal experience to assume the same of all others is an example of autoethnography.
I apologize for my error. Once upon a time, when @Emily's Cat was rejecting all gendered pronouns, I asked it whether that meant we should refer to it as "it". It replied in the affirmative, and I usually remember to do that. This time, I just forgot. Sorry.minor point - I believe Emily's Cat is male.
It, in reference to a cat, is appropriate.I apologize for my error. Cat owners that I know would reject this vigorously. It, in reference to a cat, is appropriate.
I didn't even notice and that's hilarious.Russia. North Korea.

Of course, and there's lots of good ones to choose from. I like the heart shaped ones, myselfI don't really use maps because I rarely go anywhere, but I do love looking at them. Seeing a different projection renders the familiar unfamiliar, which is always interesting. Can't we just enjoy seeing from different perspectives without arguing that one or another must necessarily be the best one? To me it seems some of y'all are arguing over whether tacos are superior to pizza. There's room for both in a diet, if not the same meal.
