A correction and an apology:
This whole time I've been laboring under the illusion that the UN was looking at changing its own internal policies for representing the globe in two dimensions. After reading the cited article more (at all) closely, I realize that this is actually the UN's recommendation to the nations of the world.
I apologize for my inattention to this important detail, and for many posts in which I argued from a flawed understanding that could have been easily prevented or corrected.
Anyway, this is a resolution from the UN that people should not default to the Mercator. So I assume that yes, over the next few years, the Mercator Projection will indeed be phased out of common usage around the world. In fact I wouldn't surprised that even though the the official position of the US government is that it's unnecessary and a waste of time, many American school districts are already putting proposals together, to switch over to some other projection.
Hopefully it won't be Togo's preferred "Eastern Ukraine belongs to Russia now" version.
