The US votes on too much stuff, by design; making it harder for citizens to know what they're voting for.
That and the time between the election and when the candidate is sworn in. It's plenty of time for a spiteful bastard to set a few, metaphorical, fires for the next person to put out

Absolutely.

A voting system has to be not only fair but seen to be fair. And transparent so everyone can understand and see how it works.

As well as being robust.

I'll refer to the British system as that's what I'm most familiar with, but many democracies have similar solutions.

The make-up of the constituencies and size of the constituencies is controlled by an independent electoral commission. And there are consultations when changes are proposed. There are national guidelines for each polling station and uniform opening times.

The vote at every polling station is open to scrutiny from representatives of the candidates and every ballot and every ballot box. They can see people entering the polling station, and the ballot boxes can be watched by anyone in the polling station. The booths are private, so what someone can see, is a person putting a folded ballot paper into the ballot box.

The count is also watched by the candidates or representatives of the candidates. And is counted by hand.

And as you say, there are things that could do to cheat the vote.

One could try to vote multiple times, but even before we required photo ID, it would be risky and only get a handful of votes that almost certainly wouldn't affect an election.

When the casting the of the votes through to the count is based on paper and pencil and no machines, there is a scope for error (which is why recounts are sometimes requested) but any effort sufficient to affect even an election for a single seat would require massive logistics and be likely to be caught.

The same cannot be said for a system relying on electronic voting machines, a global hack might flip say 5% of the votes the other way with no way for normal people to prove it and possibly difficulty even for professionals with the required access.
That wouldn't work in the USA, because this kind of system would allow non-MAGA people to vote. Allowing anyone that doesn't agree with The Regime to vote is rigging the election against The Regime.

Mobutu, Bokassa, Bongo, Idi-Amin, and not a few potentates of remote banana-republics would be proud to see Trump follow their examples …

MAGA Inc has a massive $850 million war chest but he's still loathe to give any to Republican candidates so far. You'd think he'd be more generous considering a blue wave will certainly result in his impeachment. He's probably saving it for the humongous legal fees facing him post-presidency.

Trump is far more likely to simply pilfer the loot to a private bank account in the Caymans or whatever. Anyway, he owes Pootie and the Arabs billions already. Not that he intends paying off that debt.

Counting is much faster if you don't, you know, count all of them, just a select few.
To make the process faster, first you sort the ballots into “for and “against”, then you count a pile, and just take the result as indicative of the total ballots received.

In trying to comply with Trump's Executive Order, the USPS is in disarray. Could've seen that coming right up Pennsylvania Ave. It will probably head back to the Supreme Court for another 5-4 bad decision.

The disclosure from the unidentified whistleblower contends that the Postal Service has been scrambling to try to build a complex system that would normally take a year or more in only three months, sometimes in defiance of the judge’s orders halting work. The goal is to have it ready for use in the midterm elections.

The disclosure contends that, due to the new procedures, a single scanning error in a batch of tens of thousands of ballot envelopes could prevent any from reaching voters. It details a system that election officials have already warned could not be implemented before the first mail ballots begin going out Friday in North Carolina.

TEXAS REPUBLICANS DID IT — JUST 63 DAYS BEFORE ELECTION DAY

In Tarrant County, they voted 3–2 to close 92 Election Day polling locations, cutting the number from 316 to 224.

More than 100 people showed up to protest and speak before the vote. Republicans did it anyway. Closing nearly 30% of Election Day polling places

Sure it's just coincidence that Tarrant County is 30% Hispanic and 20% black and turning blue. If Trump wants real election interference evidence, he can start here.

Perhaps the Supreme Court will decide that since the post office isn't ready for the very legal postal ukase and Texas has so many polling locations still to close, the midterm elections must be postponed until those matters have been sorted out.

Simon Marx on LBC has suggested that the only point is to cast shade on the legitimacy of the elections.

Trump's wish to make it impossible to vote by mail ballot is supposed to help MAGA. But how? I thought people used mail ballots in order to avoid driving long distances to the voting stations. Surely, this is a problem for rural voters, but not so much for urban voters. I thought that the rural countryside was more MAGA than the cities, so wouldn't it hurt MAGA more if voting by mail ballots is impossible?

Mail in voting helps whites if you know in advance who to send or not send ballots to. Just get the Post Office to check the names on the voter rolls against the GOP "good" and "bad" lists. Good ones get mail deliveries on time.
