I remember a PoMo lecturer telling us as undergraduates that the chairs we were sitting on don't really exist in any objective way, but are a product of social consensus. He also said that if there was one thing we really, really, needed to understand, - that was the answer to life the universe and everything (he didn't use those exact words, but that was the impression), it is that there is no such thing as eternal verities. I actually didn't hear clearly what he said, and only worked out that it was 'eternal verities' later when I learned more about postmodernism.
I think PoMo tends to attract people who are narcissistic for several reasons. It allows them to sound superficially impressive and use big words without saying anything, then pretend other people are too stupid to understand. It says there is no objective truth and that speech is not about discovering truth but about power relations; therefore, they can't be objectively wrong about anything. It gives them the illusion of having special insight into how the structures of oppression are created and reinforced through language and performance, which is not available to less enlightened individuals. Clearly, a narcissist has to be morally superior; so they do it by claiming to be on the side of the oppressed, which also eliminates any need to be accurate. Then they get to call everyone who disagrees with them or points out their errors a something-ist instead of arguing rationally. What's not to like?
Just some folks like folks with bodies organized the same way as their own. Makes no difference to the work they do.
