Trump's Second Term

Reporter: Have you and Bessent discussed another intervention in bond market?

Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military and if we have to, we will use it.

Art of the deal.

Canada says it will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down...

A fresh wave of US tariffs on a wide array of Canadian goods came into effect on Saturday after a last-minute breakdown in trade talks.

Announcing the suspension of negotiations shortly before the Friday night deadline, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would impose reciprocal tariffs on US goods "dollar for dollar".

Carney said "last-minute changes in the US proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal"...

Both sides blame the other for making changes at the last moment; I think it is more likely Trump tried to change things at the last moment because that is his negotiation technique.

Yup.

And by "last minute" you can also include after the agreement has been signed - see his reneging on his own renegotiated NAFTA deals

If anyone wants, or can handle, a really deep dive into the whole Natalie Harp situation, there’s a podcast called “Inside Trump’s Head”. The latest two episodes - an hour plus each - get into the back story and its implications quite well. One of the hosts is Michael Wolff, an author who has chronicled the situation going back many years, and documented the veracity of the two letters currently making the rounds.

Trump sues thinktank:
Donald Trump gave a think tank until 5 p.m. today to retract a report, apologize to him, and pay him, or he will sue it for $5 billion.

The report, from the Center for American Progress, found no evidence that his National Guard deployments have brought down violent crime in American cities. That is the entire offense. CAP looked at the numbers and concluded the troops made no measurable difference.

The government's own data tells the story. In Washington, where Trump sent troops last August, homicides fell from 274 in 2023 to 187 in 2024, which the Justice Department itself called a 30-year low. They kept falling in 2025. The drop started well before the Guard arrived, which is exactly what the report said.

Then CAP's lawyer pointed out the part Trump seems not to have thought through. A president who can sue a research group for publishing inconvenient facts is a weapon that does not stay in one set of hands. The next administration, he wrote, could aim the same thing at the Heritage Foundation.

According to what's been posted in another thread, "they defamed President Trump by distorting a contested empirical question into a sensational, false, malicious and defamatory accusation that President Trump knowingly lied to the American people".

I can't see how saying that he's lied to the American people would damage his reputation.
