Trump's Second Term

Gonna sic the US military on Wall Street if the bond market collapses? SRSLY??
Exchanges like the one cited make me wonder: Is Donnie's hearing going bad?
He's 80 in hominid years; his ears are bound to be somewhat compromised.
Does he perhaps not really catch what he's being asked, and automatically assumes that it's
meant as a challenge?

I'm not trying to make him sound more human than he really is, I'm just wondering about
a possible explanation for at least some of the loony crap he vomits.

Yup.

And by "last minute" you can also include after the agreement has been signed - see his reneging on his own renegotiated NAFTA deals
FYI. Nobody outside the USA trusts Trump to honour his deals. He is always expected to jink and jive and simply ignore them anyway. So it's likely from now on that nobody will be prepared to even talk with him, let alone negotiate, about trade. Trump is reliably dishonest.

Reporter: Have you and Bessent discussed another intervention in bond market?

Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military and if we have to, we will use it.

While this might sound silly like trump might try to bomb the bond market, there is a terrifying prospect behind this admission. I'm reminded of Thomas Friedman's very honest adage "The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist". It is seldom said out loud but it is a brutal reality.

The US economy and its massive borrowing has always been underpinned by the world's mightiest military. The country owes so much money it could never hope to pay it back but that's never the point. Seriously, who is going to enforce debt obligations on the united states of america? No one, that's who. A country can own US debt but they will soon find out, if they don't know already, they're not allowed to sell it.

America will do it the nice way first, propping up the currency like they did with JPY this week (including Bessent's hilariously obvious "to-do" list leak). They will likely have to do it again. The message is clear...if your economy is in trouble, america will provide a little help to prop it up but you will not sell your US debt. If those measures don't work, the coersions will get stronger and stronger with the ultimate backstop being a nuclear armed US military that is ready to threaten anyone they need to.

Maybe this was just a stupid, offhand comment but I think we should be very, very afraid when a US president starts talking about using the us military to prop up the economy. As this administrations disastrous economic decisions start to come home to roost (ie the markets are not being propped up by unsustainable investments by AI hyperscalers) this could become a very real possibility. We are in uncharted territory here.

According to what's been posted in another thread, "they defamed President Trump by distorting a contested empirical question into a sensational, false, malicious and defamatory accusation that President Trump knowingly lied to the American people".

I can't see how saying that he's lied to the American people would damage his reputation.
Also, it's not defamatory, slanderous, or criminal when it's completely true. Trump and co did knowingly lie and seek to deceive the American people for personal and organizational gain.

And that damage is not going to be recoverable after he's gone. the rest of the world breathed a collective sigh of relief in 2020, only for the USA to decide they needed more chaos in 2024. Even if some sane president signed a trade deal or a treaty in 2029 where's the guarantee trump 2.0 isn't in the White House come 2033?

Exactly, we gave them a second chance and they blew it. The rest of the world now knows that america is never more than 4 years away from turning into this again. Add in the destruction of state institutions that projected soft power around the globe that will take decades to rebuild if they ever are. The damage will last for a generation at least.

The rest of the world needs to prepare for a world where america is no longer the dominant power. Its a scary time and the planet could, conceivably plunge into another dark age. Its incumbent on the middle powers of the world to work together to build a multi-polar alternative that ensures no one nation can dominate, even if they do promise to play nice for a while.

Regarding the US/Canada trade war...

The latest word is that the last minute additions that the US tried to make (apparently at the insistance of lutnick) restricted Canada from signing trade deals with any other nation without US approval as well as various other attacks on our sovereignty including removing the ability to regulate basic aspects of our society like language, product safety and a whole host of others. It would have, in short, turned Canada into a vasal state with no rights to its own determination.

Yeah, hard "NO" on that. ◊◊◊◊ you america!
