Ed Israel/US Attacks Iran /Yet Another Country/Iran

Statement

Donald J. Trump +
@realDonaldTrump
We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East with respect to the Terrorist Regime of Iran:
(1) Completely degrading Iranian Missile Capability, Launchers, and everything else pertaining to them.
(2) Destroying Iran's Defense Industrial Base.
(3) Eliminating their Navy and Air Force, including Anti Aircraft Weaponry.
(4) Never allowing Iran to get even close to Nuclear Capability, and always being in a position where the U.S.A. can quickly and powerfully react to such a situation, should it take place.
(5) Protecting, at the highest level, our Middle Eastern Allies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and others.
The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it - The United States does not!
If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn't be necessary once Iran's threat is eradicated. Importantly, it will be an easy Military Operation for them.
Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

The MoU is EXPLICTLY temporary. That's part of the MoU. Point 3, to be explicit. That is the sense in which I mean it's not even alleged to be the final deal. There is no final deal yet.

And your own link points out some important differences between the signed MoE and the draft one. One is that Iran CANNOT charge any money for passage of vessels through the straits during the negotiation period of the MoU. Another is that the minimum acceptable disposal method of Iran's enriched stockpile is to down blend it in place (ie, mix it with non-enriched uranium to lower the enrichment level) under IAEA supervision. These are both significant points.
Right, so the Iranian nuclear program is going to be overseen by the IAEA and the Iranians are not going to charge for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

How is this any better than the JCPOA that Trump disengaged from which ultimately precipitated this whole drama?

iran gets $300b in restoration funds and another $100b in seized assets returned to them, so that's pretty good for them. they also don't have to deal with the inspections they did under the jcpoa. plus, the us has to stay out of the strait from here on out.

oh you meant better for the united states?

Right, so the Iranian nuclear program is going to be overseen by the IAEA
No. The down blend will be overseen by the IAEA, if that's the final disposal method for the stockpile. They're not guaranteed to HAVE a nuclear program.

They won't have a stockpile of enriched uranium, and they already lost their enrichment capacity. Plus their conventional military forces and military production capabilities are severely degraded. The JCPOA did nothing about that. Their Hezbollah proxies have also been significantly weakened, which the JCPOA also did nothing about.

Sounds pretty bad until you factor in the hundreds of billion of dollars Iran is getting to rebuild it all.

"Memorandum of understanding signed off on Wednesday; Tehran will charge ships after the 60-day negotiation period has ended, says chief negotiator"

Was this expected? I'm losing track of the shennanigans.

From the same link:
When he announced that the US and Israel had launched a war against Iran on 28 February, Donald Trump said one of the reasons the attack was necessary was that Iran had been “developing long-range missiles that can now threaten our very good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed overseas and could soon reach the American homeland”.

“We’re going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground,” the president insisted. “It will be totally, again, obliterated.”

On Wednesday – 109 days later – Trump said it would be “unfair” for Iran to not have “some” ballistic missiles, telling reporters in Paris:

I’m saying that if other countries have them, it’s a little bit unfair for them not to have some. A ballistic missile is not the same things as what we’re talking about, when we talk nuclear. But if Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and they all have some, I would say, in relative proportion, I think it’s OK.

Utter humiliation.

A nothingburger???!?

It's crazily one-sided in the ledger for Iran.

Look at this....

The United States have to rustle up 300 BILLION DOLLARS to give to Iran!

In other words, no more stirring up the monarchists and anti-regime people. The IRGC runs Iran now and the United States must keep out!!

This is Iran basically saying that they have always said they don't want nuclear weapons. Apparently the difference is that this time Trump and co are choosing to believe them this time.

What the hell!? The US is promising not to strengthen its forces in the region and no new sanctions on Iran?

Trump is proving that he is an utter incompetent at negotiations and deal-making. Apparently when he cannot extort or bully, which are his main tactics, he folds like a deckchair.

Amazing how many "Alpha Males" look up to this pitiful and senile dribbling failure of a man.
Yeah, Iran emerges stronger from this deal, and anybody who thinks this is a good think and will add stability to the Middle East is either crazy, ignorant, or viewing this thrugh huge ideological lenses.
Trump is an idiot.
This is like the treaty of Versailles: Just a truce before the next round starts.

Of course it make things more stable - the effort to keep the biggest nation by size and population isolated was not sustainable.
Israel is the troublemaker, was before and will continue to be

Can I just note we've finally reached peak humour.

People still trying to defend the orange toad and the agreement.

Please keep it up!
I won't defend the orange toad, but I will defend the agreement. There's nothing in it that I don't agree with. So thank you JD Vance, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Pakistan and of course Iran for ending this stupid war. Whatever you may think of any of them, in this case they did good.

Can you praise someone who finally does the right thing after having tried every single wrong thing?
The US and Gulf States realized the limits of their ability to dominate Iran militarily, and instead of keep fighting anyway, they cut their losses.
I guess that is worth some praise.
