Ed Israel/US Attacks Iran /Yet Another Country/Iran

eh, doesn't sound like a nothingburger. the us would be $300b in financing a rebuild for the damage, dropping all sanctions, and releasing all seized funds in exchange for ceasing hostilities the us initiated.
That can't be the deal. Lifting of all sanctions, including pre-war sanctions?

saudi press claims to leak text of the deal
So in return for the US giving up all its leverage, and quite possibly heavily drawing down its troop complement in the ME, Iran will pijky swear they won't build a bomb.

let's be clear that the deal has already been digitally signed by both sides, Iran and the US.
The Friday Switzerland signature is, in theory, just for show.

Bonkers!

Lindsey Graham: Here’s what we’ve achieved. If this thing goes through, we’ve opened up the straits…There will be in a permanent ceasefire, hopefully, and we’ll try to get a nuclear deal with Iran. Hopefully, that will work out.

If it doesn’t, then we’ve still achieved opening up the straits and stopping the fighting.

Video in link
So what we've maybe achieved by an agreement to stop a fight that we started and that closed the Strait is a couple of "hopefullys," but we've definitely achieved stopping a fight that we started and opening a Strait that was only closed because we started the fight. This is next-level stuff.

Way back in the early days of this caper, when some people were confidently asserting what the goals of the war were, there was a sidebar conversation in which Britain and Europe were being assailed for their weakness and their inability to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. If they were unwilling or unable to do it then it was a damning verdict on their waning powers.

Well now it seems that the US itself was unable or unwilling to reopen the Strait, and have agreed to a humiliating set of concessions. It seems that what was sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
There is still no clear strategy. Everyone is in the dark about the purpose of the war.

You yourself have "suspected" that this is all about killing off the first layer of the regime and then negotiating with someone more pliant, whereas jts thinks it is about killing as many of the IRGC as possible. It's possible that you are going by what America wants whereas jts is going by what Israel wants.

But either way, who wants to join a war with no clear strategy?

Why would Britain want to send its aricraft carriers or minesweepers into a place where they are just going to be shot to pieces if they don't even know what they are doing it for?

I never said it was vital. They stand to benefit from opening Hormuz, but I never claimed they needed to.

The purpose is very clear: destroy Iran's military power and nuclear program.

You didn't answer my earlier question: is keeping Hormuz open joining a war? I don't think it is. Do you feel otherwise?

Are you saying they aren't able to defend themselves from Iran? That's pretty damning.

But if you don't understand why it might be in the UK's interest to ensure freedom of navigation, even if just for non-belligerents, then I guess that's why the UK navy has fallen so far.

The whole point of a navy is to serve national interests by going in harm's way.

If opening the Strait of Hormuz serves UKian interests, why wouldn't they exercise naval power to that end? Because they can't, of course.

Yes, because it is part of the predictable consequences of starting the war in the first place.

So the UK is cutting off its own nose to spite Trump's face?

No. Sending ships sounds like an invitation to cut off its own nose to perform a futile gesture.

And yes, you may be right that the UK cannot open the Strait of Hormuz. All the more insane to send ships in there anyway.

Is that damning of the UK's naval abilities or military prowess? Yes, maybe it is.

But that only underlines the idiocy of sending ships to attempt something it is incapable of doing.

Why do you think you know exactly what the US agreed to? How confident are you that the reported "secret" document is 100% accurate? And given that it's only a temporary arrangement, why do you think it's going to resemble what happens after that, either in the case of a negotiated long-term agreement or a failure to reach such an agreement?

Keep hope alive! Maybe a completely different agreement has been agreed to! Maybe Trump is lying and has no intention of keeping his word!

Sure. Except Vance has pretty much confirmed it. And we can see that Trump is desperate to end the war. He’ll almost certainly try to weasel out of paying up because he always does. But he clearly doesn’t want to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed and yet has no obvious stomach for escalating.

I said months ago that he has to do at least one - escalate or offer concessions. Looks like he is going with the latter.
