Consciousness question

Yes, before we go running around like a chicken with our head cut off to the doctors.
That's right--you always did prefer a comfortable fantasy over anything at all that had evidence to support it.

I hope you never have a serious, life-threatening illness, Iacchus--or worse, have one befall someone you care about. With an attitude like yours, such a thing would be significantly more dangerous than it would be for a rational person.

What is that word that so perfectly sums up your characteristics? Ah yes. Here it is. misanthrope
Yes, and that Jesus character must have been a real insensitive creep for ever having said such a thing.

Of course He also said this ...

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. ~ Matthew 6:19-21
What do you think it means?

Actually, do you know why I didn't go to the doctor when I had the alleged heart attack? ... because I had a dream about going to heaven. ;) And I figured I would have been just as happy if I had died then and there so, I wasn't too worried about what came afterwards. Now, if I hadn't had the dream, as much as I resist the notion of going, yes, I probably would have gone to the doctor.

I'm just glad you don't have kids that you might keep from going to the doctor because of a dream.

And I am genuinely glad to hear you would have gone to the doctor if it were not for the dream...and I wish you dreamless nights from now on. Dreams don't seem to be something that have a good influence on you.

Yes he was. Poor guy just wanted to go bury his father, and Jesus told him to forget it, because he wanted to take a boat trip. That Jesus could be a real rectum sometimes.

What do you think it means?
I think it means you don't understand the bible any better than you do science.

This is one reason why I don't have kids. Because how can you justify bringing them into a world which you don't believe in? Of course there was this girl I was mad about way back when, and that's one of the only things I could think about but, that's another story. I honestly can't see something like that happening again.

I don't know a lot about MS but she has to undergo low dose chemotherapy for a week. After that, she has to give herself injections every day--not sure how long. A nurse showed her seven different places to administer the injections. I think I'd want to try something different to see if I could get any relief some other way.

Chemo and radiation suck. They have nasty side effects. Your hair falls out, you get nauseated, you feel terrible. I can see why somebody might want to try herbal tea, or peach pit extract, or pretty colored lights, or a massage, instead of chemo and radiation.

The problem is...chemo and radiation work. The others don't. While somebody takes the time to try tea and lights and prayers...the tumor grows. Yup, cancer grows on false hope. Cancer is already a nasty bugger; it doesn't need you giving it a head start.

I have friends who are doctors. They are in the business because they genuinely want to help people. If there was a kinder, gentler way to kill a tumor, they would be the first to advocate it. But sometimes, when a fight is serious, you have to do some serious stuff yourself. You kill the cancer, or it kills you. So go in with the big chemo and radiation guns. Don't try to persuade it gently with distilled water or sugar pills. It will kill you.

(trade "cancer" for any number of other illnesses, and "chemo and radiation" for any number of other treatments. the argument stands.)

I guess it's a different kind of chemotherapy than they use for cancer. She has multiple sclerosis (MS). A medical consultant in my office said that any drug is considered "chemo" as far as that goes. Some of the things recommended for MS in the "natural" realm are Omega 3, Omega 6, evening primrose oil, flaxseed, Vitamin E, etc. The doctor here just laughed when I mentioned it to him but he's a very strict adherent of conventional medicine. He pooh-poohs anything that they sell at a health food store.

That's disgusting!

Vitamin C helps build the immune system and Selenium helps deal with the free radicals. Now I don't know how much it will help after you've gotten cancer but, it might give you a fighting chance.

It should be a piece of cake to find out why. You have access to the internet--do you have access to scholarly journals? Our university has access to several on-line databases of clinical trials in peer-reviewed journals. Your doc pooh-poohs these things because they have not passed the test. They have not been demonstrated to be effective. There is, as yet, no reason to believe that they work!

You have the tools to check the data yourself--you say that various things were "recommended"; you can find out whether they are recommended because there is evidence for their effectiveness or because someone is trying to make a buck. If these things work, there will be evidence. If there is no evidence, it doesn't matter how earnestly someone recommends it to you, they have no reason to.

There is no reason to be an uninformed consumer when you have access to the data. If you or a loved one is sick, and you are seriously considering ignoring your doctor's advice, you are making an important enough decision that you owe it to yourself to really dig; to really make sure it is an informed decision rather than a decision made out of nothing but fear and hope. This isn't a matter of spending a few bucks on a tarot reading; this is somebody's life.

If you take these instead of real medicine, it gives the cancer the fighting chance, not you.

This is not a silly game. This is cancer. Don't **** around with vitamins. The more you put off real treatment, the bigger head start you give the cancer. Something that might have been easy to treat, if given a few months to grow while you pop vitamins, can kill you.

In the case of my brother's girlfriend who has MS, the test results confirmed the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis back in July. They have just now told her about it. She called the office about something else and it wasn't until then that her doctor realized he had neglected to notify her. She should have called to find out why they hadn't been in touch with her but I guess she just assumed that she would have heard from them if they had found anything conclusive. It doesn't sound like the office keeps very good records. She had many other tests off and on over the past couple years. She has bad discs in her back and various other ailments.

Did you know that there have been lots of studies done on the use of Chromium and diabetes? In fact the week after I started taking it (in synthetic form, instead of organically bound which, is what the book I was reading recommended), I was high as a kite. And when reading the label, it says to be sure and consult your doctor if, you were taking insulin. But I wasn't taking insulin, and I still had this horrendous reaction. I had also read elsewhere (later) that most normal people could take up to a thousand times as much Chromium (200 micrograms) without any kind of adverse reaction. Yet obviously with my sensitivity to it, it was a clear indication to me that my problem was related to diabetes. So I opted to take a different form of Chromium (organically bound or, GTF Chromium) and at a smaller dosage (100 micrograms). And sure enough my energy level increased (to a steady level), the angina pains I was experiencing began to subside (and gone in about a month), as well as the rest of the symptoms I was experiencing. So, it began to look like smooth sailing ... that is, until the drug companies began to discontinue it a month or two later. And I eventually wound up going to the doctor because I couldn't find a suitable replacement.
