Merged (edited) General thoughts about Christianity and the bible

My esteemed colleague, Mojo, was engaging in a peculiar British trait called humour, by quoting a, to many of us, well known line from The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

It is a section in which the protagonists finally discover who is running the universe: a man in a shed, who feeds his cat and tries to do his best by said feline.

In many ways my life is a minor variation of this, as this post was interrupted by my small white and black cat demanding to be fed...But I am not in charge of the universe.
I did give a serious answer to the point, but it seems that Rusty has chosen to ignore it.

IIRC, the 'serpent' was not turned into what we now know as a snake till afterwards, as a punishment. When doing the initial tempting, he was... something else? Presumably humanish, because other animals were not credited as chatty?
Whilst the word in biblical hebrew can mean snake or serpent it's pretty much always means snake, no reason to suppose it is different in the start of Genesis. So it's not a serpent in Genesis it's a common garden snake, albeit with the power of speech and knowledge of god's creation but hey lets just go with it it eh, wow these herbs are really great, I've got the munchies, oh there's an apple tree....

I've seen a god playing with a mouse. It dragged the mouse into the middle of the lawn, and batted it about until it the mouse played dead. Then it pretended it was unaware of the mouse until the mouse, lulled into a false sense of security, thought it might be able to escape. At which point the god went, "ha! You thought I'd forgotten about you, didn't you?" And then the god once again pounced on the mouse, and beat it to death as a punishment.

The mouse had committed an original sin.

ETA: Sorry, did I say "god"? I meant "cat". But that's a distinction my cat doesn't make.

Ya ok, but I meant it was not a slithery snake till afterwards, as punishment. A reading from the Book of Genesis:

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15
And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[a] and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel

Less clear than I remembered, but it sounds like the serpent was not "crawling on his belly" till afterward, meaning he was upright prior?

Remember, the cat God also created the serpent.

Such as... what? To which part of what post are you referring?
Sorry if I wasn't clear I was referring to this "Agreed, there is much in Chrisianity that is moving and insightful and solid grounds for a good way of living your life." What's unique in Christianity in that regard? And if it isn't unique to Christianity why should we look to a religion that thinks raping women is a punishment for something their husband did, that a woman who is deemed not to be a virgin on her wedding night should be stoned to death and genocide is fine, and slavery is fine and it goes on and on, you can't ignore all the crap that comes with some bit of good you may find in the teachings and just pick the bits you like - that's what a Christian does! ;)

(And for those that say that is the OT so doesn't count - remember Jesus is quoted to say those laws still stand, he makes it crystal clear that the barbaric laws in the OT should be followed to the letter, for example killing a child that doesn't honor their parent Matthew 15:3-6 and Mark 7:9-13. It is Paul's teaching that you don't need to follow those laws, which is why Christianity should really be called Paulinanity.)

Nope. The world shows absolutely zero evidence of divine intervention. Not a scrap. If you follow the evidence, no Gods appear to exist.

If one or more divinities turn out to exist but are really good at hiding, they don't get to be cross that we couldn't find them.

Also, if you think belief is a choice, I invite you to choose to believe in, say, the ancient Greek pantheon or the Norse gods for a day. Let us know if you succeed.

They definately exist it's just that they're small, nervous and hide behind the skirting boards. But you can lure them out with cheese and.... Oh, sorry that's mice. Mice definitely exist. Which makes them better than gods.
