Cont: Roe v Wade overturned - this is some BS part II

I am sure the fine legal minds will use their legal genius to review the constitution, examine past case law, and come up with a ruling that they were always going to make regardless, by quoting some "expert" from centuries ago.
IIRC, in the Dobbs ruling, Justice Samuel Alito relied on the works Sir Matthew Hale, an English jurist who oversaw the infamous 1662 Bury St Edmunds witch trial, where he allowed shaky evidence, including "spectral evidence" and testimony from young children, to convict Amy Duny and Rose Cullender of being witches, and resulting in their execution in 1664.

Or literally pretending that a prior case was ruled in the opposite way that it was and using that as justification. Or resurrecting another legal framework that was unanimously rejected by a prior Supreme Court for being so very disingenuous. Or... meh. There's been so much variety of bad behavior by the radical right-wing political extremists of the SC that trying to predict it to be any particular line of bad faith argument is something of a fool's gambit.
Look it isn't easy being an extremist supreme court judge, you know what the ruling has to be and then you have to spend absolute ages working on some kind of justification!

I don't think they're even really trying to come up with good justifications. "Because we ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ said so" is all I see.

It's a good thing women are protected by this administration. And they totally respect small government and states rights.
Oh wait, no, women should not make decisions about their own pregnancies.

Even if he doesn't get confirmed he'll still stay acting AG. And make no mistake, he's going to go after Plan B like nobody's business. Pun somewhat intended.

There is a 210 day limit on how long someone can stay as acting AG.

I am sure Trump will try to abuse the rule somehow (like they did with Alina Habba, where they tried to get around limits by changing titles between "acting" and "interim"), but fortunately the courts have shown some willingness to push back against that type of shenanigans.

“You know, I’ve seen video myself of what appears to be pills coming even from overseas to young women, and doesn’t matter who applies for it, anybody can get it. There’s no instructions; they just come dumped out of a little plastic bag, and it’s wrong,” Blanche said. “I very much commit our resources to stopping this.”
Note the "appears to be". Even IF true, the reason desperate women might be resorting to this is because they can't get it here safely and legally. And he wants to make it even harder.

This sounds great!

Robert F Kennedy Jr’s new cooking show isn’t the only big news out of the public health world this week. On Wednesday, Dr Erica Schwartz was confirmed by the US Senate as director ‌of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), making her the first Black woman to hold the position. This is the first time in almost a year that the agency has had a permanent leader; the previous director, Susan Monarez, only lasted 29 days before she was ousted for butting heads with RFK about US vaccine policies. Translation: she was a little too keen on following accepted science for the Trump administration.

So is Schwartz an RFK-approved vaccine skeptic who thinks you can cure cancer by praying to trees? Surprisingly: no. Schwartz, who served as deputy surgeon general during Trump’s first term, actually has government experience and a public health background. During her confirmation hearing in July, she walked a careful tightrope when asked about her stance towards vaccines. Schwartz said she “will never betray the science” but also dodged questions about how she would handle pressure from Kennedy.

But don’t breathe a sigh of relief quite yet. During that same confirmation hearing, Schwartz made some chilling remarks about abortion surveillance when quizzed on the issue by Missouri senator Josh Hawley, an anti-abortion lawmaker who wants to ban the abortion pill mifepristone nationwide.

“The CDC collects data on abortions that are committed in the United States of America through a system called the Abortion Reporting System,” Hawley said when asking Schwartz if she would commit to collecting detailed data on abortions. “This system is voluntary, and so a number of states, not coincidentally large blue states, do not turn over any data, so that it’s difficult to get a picture of just how many abortions and under what circumstances are committed in this country. We do know the numbers are going, way up.”

“Senator, you have my commitment,” Schwartz replied. “Abortion surveillance is absolutely a critical component of what the CDC is currently doing … I also want to make sure that certain states are not conflating emergency services and hiding abortions in that emergency services case definition,” she added. “We need to make sure we’re pulling out true abortions and making sure that we’re really having clear case definitions regarding abortions so the data is actually accurate.”

“Tremendous,” Hawley replied. He seemed very happy with her response.
Horrendous.

Hawley is a tool of the first order. He brought it up at Blanche's confirmation hearing too, talking about horror stories mifepristone; it's his obsession. But unfortunately he's a dangerous tool. His Orwellian named legislation Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act sounds like it came right of a Handmaid's Tale.

Reporting Highlights

  • Increase in Deaths: ProPublica’s analysis of CDC data found that almost 200 women died after an ectopic pregnancy from 2020 to 2025, compared with about 100 in the previous six years.
  • Delays in Care: Abortion bans make exceptions for ectopic pregnancies, but getting a definitive diagnosis can mean waiting days or even weeks, while the risk of rupture and death rises.
  • Federal Inaction: There’s been no public response to the increase in deaths. The Department of Health and Human Services has drastically cut maternal health staffers and grant funding.

Unsurprising given the right's abject lack of care for women.

Too depressing for words. Onwards Christian soldiers, marching as to war on women, till we have built Gile-ead in Texas' and Oklahoma's no doubt green, but still quite surprisingly unpleasant in some ways, land.
I rather think Baring-Gould would have disapproved of these laws. He was an interesting character.
Also, he had something of an amusedly contemptuous opinion of his most famous composition.
Sorry for going a bit OT.

Resolved: Killing an ectopic zygote to save the mother's life is an acceptable tradeoff of one human life for another.

But what does this have to do with abortions of convenience? People who buy Plan B aren't worried about ectopic pregnancy.

There are no adequate words.

Ignorance is Strength!

An ectopic pregnancy is not a viable foetus, there is no trade.

Just be proud your vote helped this situation arise - it's what you wanted, so why bother failing so hard to defend it with imaginary scenarios?
