Split Thread DEI in the US

not really sure what you're trying to accomplish here.
Just trying to figure out just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

If MAGA really is trying to bring back South African style racial apartheid, then my neighbors are even worse than I'd supposed.

oh ok. to me maga seems to be a bunch of billionaires who gave up on america and got together to strip the copper out of the country. they sometimes have conflicting views on how to go about doing it and have their own pet projects. but primarily maga, leadership at least, seems concerned with personal enrichment come what may.

but that wouldn’t play well with their base. for that support, they hired a white supremacist to craft their immigration policy, advertised what they thought about immigrants and what they were going to do, and that was pretty appealing to your neighbors.

that’s what i think anyway

Barbara Jordan was MAGA avant la lettre.

what's the alternative?
According to the graph, the alternative to record highs during the Biden years was what we got in 2025.

MAGA folks hoping to see fewer border crossings got exactly what they voted for, but at least we can call them white supremacist for wanting it.

yeah we saw how maga treated immigrants in 2025, and they did get what they voted for: immigration policy drafted by a white supremacist. doesn’t make them personally white supremacists, but they supported putting one in power.

and if you don’t want to confront that then so be it. doesn’t seem like you do.

Failing to condemn isn't quite the same as supporting.
If you fail to condemn white supremacy, then you are either a white supremacist yourself, or you are okay with people being white supremacists. Thus, the circle closes itself and we are back to where we started.

If hoping or working for less immigration is a sign of white supremacy, then of course MAGA is white supremacist.

I suspect there may be non-racist reasons why someone might argue in favor of firm national borders, however.
If you hope or work for less immigration when all economic and societal research shows that immigration is good, then I would start to wonder if there's a reason you're against it. There aren't all that many reasons to be against immigration. One of them is white supremacy.

Isn't the "MAGA" view on immigrants pretty much the norm in the rest of the world? It was the Democrat norm less than a generation ago.
No, it isn't.

The "MAGA" view on immigrants was, in fact the official policy of Australia between 1901 and 1971. It was abolished by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. This was the policy of selectively permitting immigration based on racial criteria. In particular, it favoured immigrants from European countries while prohibiting immigration from Asia and Africa, which is why it was called the White Australia Policy.

MAGA folks hoping to see fewer border crossings got exactly what they voted for, but at least we can call them white supremacist for wanting it.
Here's a hint. It's not border crossings from Canada that they're not hoping to see fewer of.

I'm okay with people being wrong in all sorts of ways so long as they aren't making policies which hurt other people. Steve King lost the Republican primary for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District in 2020, which was the first available opportunity after the offending remarks.

Just because something is economically good for GDP (or any other aggregate measure) does not mean it is good for every individual voter. People who have to compete directly with an influx of hardworking immigrants—regardless of legal status—are going to be tempted by nativist promises to staunch that flow, which might help explain why white working class voters flipped parties in the U.S. over the last few election cycles.
There aren't all that many reasons to be against immigration.
People of educational privilege have a harder time than most seeing the obvious reasons, but Bernie Sanders shows that it's not impossible.
It's not border crossings from Canada that they're not hoping to see fewer of.
Border crossings from Canada are unlikely to put significant pressure on working class labor markets because Canucks are no less educated than their neighbors to the south. Border crossings into the U.S. from Mexico will tend to depress labor rates in relatively unskilled fields such as landscaping and roofing in a way that border crossings from Canada will not, and that is before factoring in the relative magnitudes of those two immigration flows.

None of this really relates back to "DEI in the U.S." though, all that it shares in common with that topic is the progressive tendency to assume conservative opposition is motivated primarily by hatred for subaltern groups rather than ordinary self-interest.

To compensate for the off-topicality of my last post, I offer this recent study which purports to show specific policy positions upon which Democratic Party officials would most benefit their party by modifying their stance to a more moderate position; the top two both fall under the umbrella of DEI.

ETA: Over half of the nine specific issues with statistically significant effects (top of the attached graph) are arguably DEI issues, which is much higher than the fraction of DEI issues to the overall test set.

i saw that todd blanche announced a grand jury indictment against the southern poverty law center for wire fraud regarding payments to informants against the kkk and other hate groups and thought it might be of interest to this thread. unless we are completely done talking about what white supremacist policy in action looks like

I've been trained not to go off-topic after seeing several dozen posts moved to AAH. 🤷‍♂️

Presumably weaponization of the DOJ against progressive activists will be covered in one of the many Trump threads.

The whole 'I'm agin DEI' stuff seems to be:

"Anyone who isn't white shouldn't get anything, ever."

And, the MAGA stuff seems to sit pretty closely with that.

Make American Great Again, is just code for: "Get rid of, or oppress, all the Red|Yellow|Brown|Black people, just like the good ol' days."

If that's not MAGA's message, you're doing a really ◊◊◊◊ job of promoting the real message.

Especially here in the DEI thread.

yeah but you guys won't participate in those, and we were having a really conversation about dei as it relates to the reemergence of white supremacy. which, i think, gives this thread and regarding the efforts to dismantle dei a lot of important context.

Shouldn't come as any great surprise that people who voted against Trump don't do a good job of promoting his movement's message.

Self-interest is racist.
Is it racist to pursue self-interest by becoming the individual beneficiary of an Affirmative Action program (e.g. placement/scholarship at a highly selective school) or is pursuing self-interest only racist when white folks do it?

We were considering assertions that eliminating DEI is an attempt to roll the clock back to Jim Crow or apartheid South Africa. These are not ideas which need to be taken all that seriously, they are just nightmarish extrapolations of what would happen in the event that MAGA keeps going well beyond their stated goals.
