No. Getting scammed by Netanyahu into starting an unwinable war was already more than enough to confirm he is unfit to be president. There are many other things he did before that that make me believe he is unfit to be president (the DOGE thing for example). Tr*mp backing down on a threat to commit genocide doesn't move the needle.

The New York Times has an important story today, reported by Jonathan Swan and Maggie Haberman, on how and why President Trump decided to attack Iran.

This will be behind a paywall for many, so I'll summarize the main points.

On 11 February, Benjamin Netanyahu and a small number of high-ranking Israeli officials met with Trump in the White House Situation Room. Also present were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, General Dan Caine (chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), and a few more hangers-on such as Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Netanyahu pitched his plan for the two countries to launch a joint attack on Iran.

That plan had four objectives:
  1. decapitation: kill the ayatollah
  2. destroy Iran's power to threaten its neighbors
  3. inspire a successful popular uprising
  4. regime change: install a secular leader of Iran
Discussing that plan on the following day, the Americans agreed that the first two objectives were achievable, but that objectives 3 and 4 were detached from reality. Ratcliffe said objective 4 was "farcical". Rubio explained the meaning of that word to Trump: "In other words, it's ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊."

General Caine, trying to be more diplomatic, said the Israelis routinely oversell the prospects of plans that aren't well developed. Caine also warned that such a war would rapidly deplete stockpiles of sophisticated US weapons, especially interceptors, and there would be no quick way to replace those weapons. Caine also noted that the US had a basically unlimited number of cheap bombs, which would become useful after air superiority had been achieved. Trump heard the word "unlimited" and took it to mean he could ignore Caine's other warnings.

Caine also warned that Iran would probably block the Strait of Hormuz, and it would be very hard for the US to prevent that. Trump dismissed that concern because he thought the war would be over before the Iranians could get around to that.

Trump decided objectives 1 and 2 were reason enough to go to war.

After another meeting in the Situation Room on 26 February, Trump conveyed his final decision the next day: "Operation Epic Fury is approved. No aborts. Good luck."

It is not as if progressives or sane people have suddenly, out of the blue, decided that calls to destroy an entire civilization are beyond the pale and have opportunistically decided to oppose it because of TDS.

Well, of course he is. That’s what it always meant to those who voted him to be president. Anyone with eyes to see and the memory longer than a goldfish could have told the Americans that electing such an obvious and visible selfish, greedy, idiotic moral vacuum of human being to enormous power was a stupid thing to do.

Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution.
