Trump says he does not want Somalis in US as ICE plans Minnesota operation

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been directed by the Trump administration to target undocumented Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities, a person familiar with the planning told the BBC's US partner CBS News on Tuesday.

Hundreds of people are expected to be targeted when the operation begins this week, the official said. The New York Times first reported the operation.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, declined to comment on planned operations and denied that any people would be targeted based on race.

"Every day, ICE enforces the laws of the nation across the country," said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

A 7-year-old student and his mother were detained by immigration authorities while traveling over the Thanksgiving break, according to the superintendent of Vermont's Winooski school district.

The boy, who attends JFK Elementary School in Winooski, failed to show up for classes on Monday after the holidays, according to the school. School officials contacted his home, and his father reported that he had been unable to reach his wife and son since Thursday, according to Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria.

Newsweek has contacted the school district, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security, for comment.

Stop fear-mongering. ICE does NOT arrest or deport U.S. citizens.

If a U.S. citizen is arrested, it is because they have obstructed or assaulted law enforcement. What makes someone a target for immigration enforcement is if they are illegally in the U.S.—NOT their skin color, race, or ethnicity.

Secretary Noem has been clear: rioters will not stop us or slow us down.

Bull ◊◊◊◊. They're dropping charges against citizens they've arrested for "obstruction." These arrests are intended to intimidate.

They are detaining based on skin color; Bovino admitted to it.

ICE detain active duty U.S. Navy Sailor in full uniform—refuse to accept his military ID.

"Agent said he had 'reasonable suspicion' to suspect he was in U.S. illegally," said Navy Chief.

"Needs to provide other ID to prove citizenship... his military ID is not sufficient."

Agents detained this Hispanic sailor—who was in full uniform, on his way to a military base, with an active military ID—for an hour and a half until someone could bring his passport.
