Merged Charlie Kirk shot at Utah Valley University event. / Charlie Kirk Shot And Killed

I can't even express how angry and concerned I am.

Seriously, this is not at all okay.

For years, it's been the left insisting that hate speech shouldn't be legally tolerated. And while politicians haven't acted on that sentiment from left-wing citizens, it's been a pretty consistent refrain. Generally speaking, most right wing citizens have taken a more constitutional free speech view, where you can say whatever hateful thing you want as long as you're not threatening someone or actively inciting violence.

Bondi now advocating to suppress free speech that is deemed hateful is an escalation that needs to be squashed and fast.
Bondi walked that statement back within hours following criticism from conservatives. She said that action will be taken when "hate speech crosses the line into threats of violence."

People who don't have Gen Zed kiddos running around (or Bluesky accounts) might be forgiven for missing the waves of youthful exuberance around Mangione & Robinson, mostly in the form of memes and short videos. It's been somewhat disheartening.
More like terrifying.

The truly ironic part of this entire thing is that Turning Point USA was founded in 2012. They were pretty well-known for their negative outlook on COVID-19 restrictions (including masks) and for being notably pro-second amendment.

How about all of the right-wingers calling for a war against the left? How about deporting people that say something negative about Charlie Kirk? How about threatening all government employees and contractors if they say anything negative about Charlie Kirk? They ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ walk that ◊◊◊◊ back too or are is that still on? I thought so.

Who, exactly, was Charlie Kirk threatening? Better yet, what institution was he threatening, if any?

Think about it. If Charlie, this lone individual, was talking in a town square in China, every member of this forum would know what institution was being threatened.

Rushdie and Galileo were two individuals who threatened some pretty big institutions. I have no doubt there would be a consensus on both. I have never thought of atheism or secularism as institutions, but I seriously doubt they felt threatened by a 31 year old Christian.

So. Who, or what, was being threatened by Charlie Kirk?

President Joe Biden, for one.

Charlie Kirk said:
Joe Biden is a bumbling, dementia-filled Alzheimer's, corrupt, tyrant who should honestly be put in prison and/or given the death penalty for his crimes against America.

You're entirely blasé about the U.S. Attorney General openly and blatantly threatening free speech...

More like terrifying.

... but an unsourced and anecdotal claim about kids saying mean things online has you terrified.

Yeah, that tracks.

"I have come not to replace the law but to fulfill it." "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."
Pet peeve: these verses don't say that the Old Testament law still applies. They say that it doesn't, because it's been fulfilled.

I think everyone knows this, but that doesn't change the fact that online discourse in a fairly civil environment is enjoyable to have.
Sorry, but that is rapidly disspearing.

Gay People, Trans People. BLack People (his civil rights was a big mistake comment) people who are not Fundy Protesnent Christians, anybody who dares to criticize Dear Leader Trump, and give me a minute I could come up with a few more.
And.please not the Galileo comparasion. As Carl Sagan said, noting how every nutcase tried to paint himself as another Galilleo:
"Yes, they laughed at Galileo. They also laughed at Bozo the Clown".

So far I've heard the shooter was a left wing radical, a right-wing radical, and a trans-rights radical dating his trans roommate and the writing on the bullet casing is either radical left or on-line gamer slang, or I suppose both. I don't know why I need to be reminded, but nothing in the first week or even two in any kind of big news story regarding violence or tragedy is reliable.
Or just a general issue Loony.
Of course in a lot of cases it is almost like a mental case flips a coin to see if swings to the far right or the far left.
Both in the end are destructive to democracy and indivdual liberty.

As an aside to the Free Speech discussion as it relates to the subject of this thread, those who choose to mock, sneer and laugh at the idea that free speech is under attack in the UK, need to take a look at this case...

A freelance journalist in Cornwall (Rebecca Tidy-Harris) reported on Twitter/X that a local ex-Policeman (Harry Tang) has been arrested for stalking and harassing someone, and was due to appear in Bodmin Magistrates Court in November. She also shared an article from the publication Plymouth LIVE, about the same case - None of her posts made anything up or included any speculation, or facts that were not in evidence - they are all established, checkable facts with public filings.

Finally, in a later post, she posted a photo of herself and her child on a beach in front of her sister's house. The ex-Policeman complained to Plymouth police that she was harassing him because he lives near that beach. The Plymouth Police called her and asked her to come into the station. When she asked what it was about, they refused to say, so she said no. They told her that unless she comes in for an interview, they would come to her house and arrest her.

See the video for the rest of the interview and story...

This is not an unusual case. It is daily a occurrence in the UK. Its no joke - hundreds of people are being threatened with arrest in the UK every day for things they have posted on social media - over 30 people actually are arrested for things they say on social media, though rarely are they ever charged.

Rebecca continues to be "under criminal investigation" for harassment in a case that the Police should never have taken seriously. It ought to have been dismissed by they at the first look. When people say the "Process is the punishment", this is the kind of insidious Police behaviour they are taking about.

Does not take away from the fact that your nation's top legal advisor should NEVER have said that in the first place. The Attorney General needs to be the very model of calmness, consistency and level-headed demeanor. This one is a crazy MAGA moron and Fat Orange Turd loyalist. She is totally unqualified for the job (just as Kash Patel is totally unqualified for his).

Kimmel should make a large donation to Turning Point USA

FCC Chair Brendan Carr says Sinclair has "every right" to demand that Jimmy Kimmel to donate to Turning Point USA

If Kimmel wants to use their platform, yes, they have every right. The FCC's involvement in this matter seems excessive, but not Sinclair's; they own the stations.

It was a stupid comment.

Bondi was the Florida State AG. We may fault her politics, but she seems reasonably qualified.

And that doesn't take away from the fact that people attacking her are ignoring the fact that she amended her statement.
