Sorry if this is offtopic, but I can't help thinking of the movie "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", also set on NZ and dealing with somewhat similar issues, but sympathetic to the fugitives.

I hope the children can recover, it's not going to be easy for them - they will have to change their view of the world, as well as of their dad. Children are incredibly loyal, even more so when they have been isolated from the rest of the world, and letting go of most of what they have believed will be very painful.

There seems to be some suspicion that he is nearby and using his home as a base, but also a lot of speculation that he is dead and not found yet.

It would be a boring life on private property all the time. Maybe he is helping out on a farm. If so all the other farm hands would be sovcits as well, otherwise one of them would have, for $1m, reported him. He may have had help to escape to a land far, far away. But most likely he is dead.

Dezi Freeman has been shot dead by police after months on the run.

The 56-year-old was found on Monday morning and then shot by heavily armed police bringing to an end a complex, marathon search, 7NEWS can exclusively reveal.

It’s understood Freeman had been hiding in a shipping container around the Porepunkah area.

I’m surprised he was still in the area, but still a result.
