Two cops shot dead in rural Australia

Edit. If he wanted to get away quickly his best bet would be to steal a bicycle. I hope he has plenty of cash. If he uses a credit card then the police will know where he is. Otherwise, he can stay in a hiding place that is well stocked with food, etc until the police give up. That could take weeks.
He's an experienced hunter. He could stay out there for months if he wanted to.

He would need food. He might be able to shoot an animal, but you need to cook it. Since it is raining that means do it inside. Expect police to regularly visit everything that is suitable. Then the sound of the gun going off would give off his location. He should have somewhere that is fully stocked with everything he needs for weeks. Then he will be hard to find.

Loaning a murderer your car knowing that he killed two police officers would land you in serious trouble. About your only defense would be that you did not know he is a killer. I doubt that police would take long to detect this fact. One thing they might do is trace every car registered in the area.

Nope, won't happen. He killed two cops. They do NOT give up on that. Ever. Even if it means finding his dead and rotting corpse and kicking it.

How long can they afford to spend 100s of police looking for him in that area? Anyone know of any similar cases?
Operational decisions are made without consideration of budget. Police have very large budgets which contingency funding always available. They won’t be stopping any time soon.

Or the simpler "He threatened me and my family and I didn't believe the police could protect us".
If they are true sov cits they would not say that. They could not resist the opportunity to tell police they have no power over them.

Well it's not exactly comparable, being in New Zealand and lacking any murders, but Phillips has been hiding out with his three children for nigh on four years.

I have worked with police investigations, albeit not in Australia, and that is nonsense. Even murder investigations are subject to budget restrictions.

And I have worked for Victoria Police, and at one stage, as Acting Director of Administration, had the Finance Department under me. There were a lot of mass murders (including the killing of two police) in my time. Budgets did not impact on these operations.

Of course, there were attempts to direct funds from lower priority areas, or extra funding from Treasury. But budgets did not impact on critical operations.

If all investigative leads have been exhausted is the case still active? Or just open?

Is the lead detective supposed to spend an hour each day, cold-calling random citizens, just in case they know something? Have constables tramping through the bush in shifts, in case they stumble upon a fresh clue? They're cops, not terminators.

And what exactly has this to do with the Freeman case?

I am certain this case will not scale down until Freeman is arrested or found dead.
