Cuomo defeated in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary

I think the issue is being blurred by politics here in a way that is likely to rebound in the wrong direction. There may be plenty of reason to consider Momdani a lousy candidate and to call for someone else to win, and all sorts of other things....
Spell his name correctly!!!

I wish I was living in a world where this is worth so much attention at the expense of everything else
Can I keep two thoughts in my mind. I think an American descended from South Asians that lived in Africa for a generation or two would know that in the US "Black or African American" is almost always meant to indicate that you are an African American Descendant of Slaves, generally meant to indicate you are the Descent of folks enslaved in the US and not the children of two wildly successful South Asians. The reason is pretty obvious. I think he did it to can gain some advantage. It also didn't seem to help even if it had. But as it is, it does not matter and anyone that says they care is probably full of ◊◊◊◊.

Has it occurred to anyone that they may be overthinking this?
It's occurred to me. While it raises for me some interesting and/or amusing ideas, I'm not that invested in it. I'm certainly not interested in the level of kremlinology and doctrinaire rules-following that herc aspires to.

And I do think that, cynical or naive, Mamdani was probably overthinking those checkboxes by a huge margin.

Every single time I point out that you never address the fact that tour president threatens to deport Momdani because he disagrees with his policies, a step only taken by other tinpot dictators, you ignore that fact and point to minor character flaws, neither of which actually has to do with his run for major....
Sorry, no such man exists. Maybe spell it right.

Not really "black African." "African-American" means black American decendant of slaves. Americans know that. We joke that Elon Musk is African-American but really, in the American usage, he's not. Neither is Mamdami.
Again, this man has a different name. Spell it right.

It's a bit like mispronouncing "Kamala" over and over and over, ad infintum, after you have been corrected; "these names are just too outlandish! Mom or Mam, does it really make a differnce?" Of course it does. Write Momdani once, sure, it's a typo or a misunderstanding, but if you keep doing after it has been pointed out to you, it does begin to smell a little off.

Enh. I pronounced it ka-MA-la because that's how it would be pronounced in Portuguese. It still feels like the most natural way to pronounce it, and Harris herself has pronounced it that way in the past. Honestly I think suddenly standardizing pronunciations midstream, and then castigating anyone who didn't immediately adopt the new shibboleth, was a more cynical move than whatever Mini-Me was trying to do with those checkboxes.

Really? Do you really think that? I'm not sure I believe that. What I do believe is that names are in their own category; they are pronounced the way their owners pronounce them. I've never heard her, or her children, or partner, or colleagues for that matter, mispronounce it, and to keep mispronouncing it once you know seems at best disingenuous (I don't mean you).

Never mind, this is ot, we were talking about Mogadishu.

As someone with a difficult foreign name, I've taken the position that they're pronounced however someone manages to pronounce them.

But then, I place a premium on people not having to worry about whether I'll get mad over how they pronounce my name.

Never mind, this is ot, we were talking about Mogadishu.
Indeed, let's get back to Miami.

So sad that one participant has managed to derail this thread with trivial BS. I think there is a word for that behavior.

Why many Asian American Trump voters chose Zohran Mamdani in NYC's primary

“I liked his policies, mainly his support for education and affordable housing,” said Shirley Wong, 70, of Bensonhurst, referring to Mamdani. “He seems to listen to us.”

But less than a year ago, Wong cast her ballot for Trump. She cited the influx of migrants in her neighborhood, as well as the cost of living under President Joe Biden. But now, Wong said she regretted voting for Trump, citing the Big Beautiful Bill’s projected cuts to Medicaid.

“I changed my mind to choose someone who can help us,” she said, referring to Mamdani and his progressive platform. “He just needs to prove everything he’s saying.”
