Cuomo defeated in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary

Yes, let's focus on his skin color and whether or not he or his parents were the correct kind of non white....
Momdani created this issue by falsely claiming to be of African decent when he applied for Columbia. Obviously hoping for a AA step up, which would have meant he stole a place at Columbia from a REAL TRUE African-American.

Race fraud is not cool.

He listed his ethnicity/racial background as Black or African-American and Asian.

He was born in Africa to Asian parents.

Uganda expelled all the Asians, they weren't allowed to take any property or money with them. They were citizens that had lived there for generations,
A phenomenon that I suspect a great many naturalized US will become familiar with.

No you you other 'totally not Trump supporters honest' types have manufactured an issue to help justify it when your 'not' beloved President has him arrested and thrown in a detention camp.

This is one fight I'm content to let the black voters of New York fight for themselves. If they don't think Mamdani's lived experience places him within the African-American community, who am I to disagree?

People of Indian and Pakistani descent, are not African-American and are not black.

Just as Elon Musk is not black even though he was born in Africa. Just like Mamdani.

Only people of black African ancestry have any business claiming to be black or African for admissions purposes when applying for college, scholarships, etc.

A deeply insane take.

I have to assume the obtusness is deliberate.
1. The question is mostly for tracking demographics.
2. In the united states, black and African American are generally synonymous with African American descendants of slaves.
3. The US owes a specific debt to AADOS.
4. Some programs are meant to address that debt.

It's remarkably odd to think that answering a question about race and ethnicity with I am black or African American makes sense if you are not AADOS.

It's remarkably ignorant to think that question isn't intended to determine if you ar an African American descendant of slaves.

He accurately checked a box on a college application and didn’t even get into that college.

People born in Africa are African.

When did Mamdani claim anything about lived experience? He identifies as African because he was born in Africa. That is the only claim he made.

In a 2020 interview, Mamadani expounds on his heritage:

It’s definitely a complex journey because I am many different things all at once. There’s no question in my mind that I’m Ugandan. There’s no question in my mind that I’m Indian. And there’s no question in my mind that I’m a New Yorker. And I’m all of these things, yet in each of these places I’ve been made to feel that it’s not actually my home to call– in Uganda, I’m told this guy is actually Indian, in India, I’m told this guy is actually Muslim, and in New York I’m everything but a New Yorker.

But I’m realizing that it’s not a determination I should be outsourcing to others. It’s something that if I know and feel, then I need to become comfortable in asserting. Others will take time in catching up to that. It also helps to understand that if you’re part of any diaspora you have to live in multiple worlds at once, and have multiple sets of cultural references and histories–so that if you were to describe yourself in one singular term, it doesn’t really capture the different ways in which you think about the world.

Looking forward to the dip ◊◊◊◊ brigade sputtering “But he’s not Black!” in response.

That's a thoughtful answer to a complex situation - so exactly the sort of thing that most people have no time for or interest in.

They want the certainty of "African" = dark skinned.

People with a predominantly non-African ancestry born in Africa - not really African

People who are North African and not particularly dark skinned - not really African

Indeed anyone who doesn't fit their idea of African - not really African

For those people he's equivocating and digging the hole deeper. He needs to admit that he lied about being African, withdraw from the mayoral race and self deport back to Africa.

Yes, but on the other hand I remember an interviewer once calling Lenny Henry a British African-American and getting very confused when he said he wasn't.

This issue is about Mamdani lying about his racial ancestry, not Trump.

He was born in Africa and moved to the USA. No, he's not a DOS, but neither is Barack Obama. Does 44 qualify as African-American? His dad was African and his mom was American.

Both you and Herc have leapt to the assumption that not only was he intentionally misrepresenting himself but that he was gaining an advantage by so doing. We don't know his intentions but we know that it didn't succeed with Columbia. Note also that by ticking the Asian box as well, Mamdani was probably hurting his chances, as Asians are considered overrepresented at the Ivy League schools.

Don't like the guy's politics, but this is a nothingburger.

A very fair position to take IMO.

No, he does not need to leave the election or leave the country. He simply needs to own up to his error on the Columbia application.
