Funny how sometimes race suddenly matters and sometimes it doesn't!
He's not black at all. He's not black enough for them and if he was he wouldn't deserve anything anyway, it's racist!
African-American is synonymous with black. If you claim to be black for admissions purposes and are not you're committing fraud and it's very wrong."folks like him"
Asian descent from Uganda. How does that not qualify?
Shows incredible disrespect towards black persons and the suffering they went through in this country, to falsely claim to be one of them so as to get preferential treatment on a college application.Skin colour seems to be very important to you.
It's all quite childish. Racist to notice the difference except when it's racist to not.Shows incredible disrespect towards black persons and the suffering they went through in this country, to falsely claim to be one of them so as to get preferential treatment on a college application.
I believe in Affirmative Action and paying our debt to black American society for what we did to them. Taking advantage of such a program by falsely claiming black African heritage, is horrible.
There is nothing childish about wanting to repair 400 years of syatemic racial discrimination, and using preferences in college admissions as a way to help that process. It's all quite childish. Racist to notice the difference except when it's racist to not.
Missed the point I think. It's childish to act as though the attempt to rectify that 400 years should distinguish between African American descents of slaves and descendants of South Asians from a Africa. Or that laws meant to do so weren't intended to make that distinction. There is nothing childish about wanting to repair 400 years of syatemic racial discrimination, and using preferences in college admissions as a way to help that process.
Uh, nup. Up until 1967 in your country, Anti-miscegenation laws definitely deemed Asian Indians to be non-white.He's not black at all.
Indians are not considered black. They are Caucasian.
Also, a number were brought over by the British as indenturerd labour, so some SE Indians in America can indeed claim to be descendents of slaves.Anti-miscegenation laws discouraging interracial marriage between White Americans and non-whites affected South Asian immigrants as early as the 17th century. For example, a daughter born to an Indian father and Irish mother in Maryland in 1680 was classified as a "mulatto" and sold into slavery. Anti-miscegenation laws there continued into the early 20th century.
Ergo, some Indian-Americans from Africa (Uganda) can claim to be descendents of non-white slaves. In addition, in the 1890s, 32,000 labourers from British Indians were brought to Southeast Africa under indentured labour contracts to work on the construction of the Uganda Railway. Most of the surviving Indians returned home, but 6,724 individuals decided to remain in the African Great Lakes after the line's completion. At the time of the expulsion, there were approximately 80,000 individuals of South Asian descent in Uganda,
He was born in Africa and moved to the USA. No, he's not a DOS, but neither is Barack Obama. Does 44 qualify as African-American? His dad was African and his mom was American. It's remarkably odd to think that answering a question about race and ethnicity with I am black or African American makes sense if you are not AADOS.
Both you and Herc have leapt to the assumption that not only was he intentionally misrepresenting himself but that he was gaining an advantage by so doing. We don't know his intentions but we know that it didn't succeed with Columbia. Note also that by ticking the Asian box as well, Mamdani was probably hurting his chances, as Asians are considered overrepresented at the Ivy League schools. It's remarkably ignorant to think that question isn't intended to determine if you ar an African American descendant of slaves.

Ya gotta SJW about "black" to cover up your Republican preferences somehow . . .Both you and Herc have leapt to the assumption that not only was he intentionally misrepresenting himself but that he was gaining an advantage by so doing. Don't like the guy's politics, but this is a nothingburger.
Only when it suits the right-wing.I have been told all my life that government-run companies can never compete with private run ones - was I being lied to?

Why should they not deserve the same rights as descendents of African black slaves?
