Trump's Second Term

He wants to encourage the south to secede, and to get rid of California, but also to seize Canada and Greenland.

So, although I don't know why, his master plan is to recentre the United States slightly further to the North and West <edit> East I meant, obvs.

You don't have to tackle climate change if you just move your country north. 5D chess baby!

Los Angeles police say they're conducting "mass arrests" after mayor Karen Bass declared a curfew for parts of downtown LA

Chief McDonnell says it does not apply to residents within the designated area or those experiencing homelessness, nor credentialed media.

The curfew "is not about silencing voices", he says.

About that....

About that....

The USA is very, very broken.

What do you do when the organisation nominally dedicated to protecting and serving do that. To whom do you turn?

When a uniformed representative of the state can do this, and, will bet my left nut, experience no consequenses, what do you do?

(I wonder if her health insurance covers this..?)

Interesting article here. In the 1930s the USA sent 400,000 "Mexican" migrants back to Mexico with the rationale that they "took jobs away from whites".
From the individual level linked regressions, we find that the Mexican repatriation program reduced the employment opportunities of incumbent natives. It also generated significant occupational downgrading of native workers as well as an out-migration response.
This finding is robust across several different specifications and subsamples.

Oh, I see. A little read around the internet this morning gives me the impression that they're just going to shoot all the journalists...

I recall once listening to Ann Coulter being interviewed on the radio. It was mentioned to her that there were reports of the U.S. military intentionally targeting reporters in come conflict, probably Iraq or Afghanistan. Her response? “If only”.

I thought the idea was despicable then, and it’s despicable now. But once you establish the press as “The enemy of the people”, it’s perhaps inevitable.

Trump liked military school. At least the parade uniform. And senators too.
“I don’t think that the president had any choice,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.). “These weren’t just protests—these were riots. And it was clear that the governor and the mayor—the mayor’s idea of containment was to give them a hug and a cup of hot cocoa. And the president did what he had to do.”

As for whether he was okay with the Marines being deployed as well, Kennedy told me bluntly, “If they’re needed, yeah.”

“I don’t think they’ll do it unless it’s legal,” he added. “But if it’s necessary to contain the riots, yeah. We need to send whatever we have to end [the riots].”

Frankly, it’s hard to imagine an action of Trump’s that Kennedy and other Republicans would object to or not find “legal.” Kennedy’s words suggest as much: If the administration is doing it, it must be legal. You can’t come much closer to saying “the administration cannot do wrong” without just saying it.

The closest thing to criticism over Trump’s use of the guard and military in L.A. I heard from a Republican lawmaker was a comment from Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.). The chairman of the Armed Services Committee told me, “I was encouraged to hear that the mayor stated that the city and the federal government are now working collaboratively, and I think that’s the way it should be.”

Except, Wicker seems to not be aware of what’s actually happening. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass actually called the administration’s activation of National Guardsmen “a chaotic escalation,” adding in a later press conference:

Let’s be real about this: This is about another agenda. It’s not about public safety. There is clearly no plan, and I want the people of Los Angeles to know that we stand with all Angelenos no matter where you were born.
There might not be a plan, but there is a longstanding desire. Trump has fantasized about using the military against citizens for much of his political career. In the summer of 2020, he was eager to deploy U.S. soldiers against civilians protesting in various cities across the United States, according to former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

The ridiculous overhyping of what's happened in LA surely leaves Trump vulnerable to accusations of being incompetently unaware of the real situation he pretends to be reacting to. This is the guy who has the job of (asking Congress to let him) send the marines into actual combat if necessary. He's displaying total incomprehension of what a necessary provocation would look like.

USA, this is why we won't be back to visit for a VERY long time, if ever. First, it was all the guns. Then it was your stupid president. Then the idiotic border force. Now this PR disaster.

Your country is now being run by openly Nazi-style fascists, headed by a patent mafioso lunatic. Until this is "fixed" permanently, you're on your own.

Perhaps this post belongs in the "Places I would never go back to" thread...
