Trump's Second Term

IMO the "but" followed the democracy at the point of a gun and was the "dominate" zooterkin mentioned upthread.
In the version linked from post 16778 he says:
The job of the US armed forces is not to host drag shows, to transform foreign cultures, but to spread democracy to everybody around the world at the point of a gun, the military's job is to dominate any foe and annihilate any threat to America, anywhere, any time, and any place.
OK, it's not very coherent. His droning manner of speech makes it seem like one long rambling sentence, and it's possible that there should be a full stop after "gun", which might make it clearer that the "but" is a mistake, but the "but" clearly precedes the "spread democracy" bit. I suppose it could be that the video has been edited, or what sounds like the word "but" is just Trump banging into the microphone while trying to say "or", as his mouth is hidden behind the microphone.

On reflection I may have done him a disservice. He said their job was to eliminate threats, rather than people. You can eliminate threats with deterrence, which is indeed what an army is for.

How is it edited?

He might not have meant that but it's what he said.
Did you watch the video, or just copy the text?

What he actually says is:
The job of the US Armed Forces is not to host drag shows, to transform foreign cultures, or to spread democracy to everybody around the world at the point of a gun. The military’s job is to dominate any foe and annihilate any threat to America — ANYWHERE, ANY TIME, and ANY PLACE.

I think that's the problem, it's not 'but', it's 'or'. He doesn't say it very clearly, but if it were 'but', the stress would be completely different.

He doesn't do inflection, it's all in a droning monotone that would be the same whatever he was saying. The word definitely sounds like "but" to me. But it's Trump, so who knows what, if anything, he actually meant.

ETA: are we actually listening to the same recording? The only one I've heard is the one Andy linked to in post 16778. Are there others that sound different?

Thanks for that. Though what he did say wasn't a lot better.
Given how much emphasis Trump and co have put on dealing with internal threats over external threats, there's plenty to be very unhappy about there, all around, of course, without any need to meaninglessly quibble over whether something was an or or a but. Going a little further -

Trump suggests using military against ‘enemy from within’ on Election Day

That was from October in 2024, incidentally, and more broadly -

Trump has made more than 100 threats to prosecute or punish perceived enemies

Since 2022, when he began preparing for the presidential campaign, Trump has issued more than 100 threats to investigate, prosecute, imprison or otherwise punish his perceived opponents, NPR has found.

It's a reaction to the same event, so that was the state of affairs in October 2024.

Having actually listened now I'm sure he says "but" though in context I'm equally sure he was meant to say "or".

He was trying to say it's not his army's job to fight for anyone else's freedom.
The American right have never been particularly keen on democracy elsewhere, it allows people they don't like to be elected. They tend to regard it as one of the things that Trump said the military should be annihilating.

They aren't cutting medicaid, they are just strengthening it

Speaker Mike Johnson
@SpeakerJohnson
Let me be clear: we are NOT cutting Medicaid.

We are STRENGTHENING the program for the American citizens who need and deserve it.

As President Trump has said, we are eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse by STOPPING 1.4 million illegal aliens from stealing coverage and 4.8 million adults who are able to work but refuse to from gaming the system.

We have to preserve resources for America’s most vulnerable like pregnant women, single parents, low-income seniors, and the disabled.

Another reasoned, well-considered, holiday message from our Commander-in-Chief.

“HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY THROUGH WARPED RADICAL LEFT MINDS, WHO ALLOWED 21,000,000 MILLION PEOPLE TO ILLEGALLY ENTER OUR COUNTRY, MANY OF THEM BEING CRIMINALS AND THE MENTALLY INSANE,THROUGH AN OPEN BORDER THAT ONLY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT WOULD APPROVE, AND THROUGH JUDGES WHO ARE ON A MISSION TO KEEP MURDERERS, DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS, GANG MEMBERS, AND RELEASED PRISONERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, IN OUR COUNTRY SO THEY CAN ROB, MURDER, AND RAPE AGAIN,” Trump wrote in 174-word post Monday morning.

The president continued, adding that those migrants whom the administration has attempted to or successfully deported in recent months are “ALL PROTECTED BY THESE USA HATING JUDGES WHO SUFFER FROM AN IDEOLOGY THAT IS SICK, AND VERY DANGEROUS FOR OUR COUNTRY. HOPEFULLY THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, AND OTHER GOOD AND COMPASSIONATE JUDGES THROUGHOUT THE LAND, WILL SAVE US FROM THE DECISIONS OF THE MONSTERS WHO WANT OUR COUNTRY TO GO TO HELL.”
What a ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ lunatic.

It's Memorial Day, ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊. Take a day off from your authoritarian rants and act like an solemn adult for once in your life. Today is a day to honor and mourn fallen armed service members, not throw a temper tantrum, you stupid ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ prick.

ETA: And what's this Happy Memorial day ◊◊◊◊? Didn't he wish everyone a Happy Good Friday? Crazy Grampa has no clue as to social skills and decorum.

Be careful what you wish for, Donnie.

Here is a slightly more complete version of his Memorial Day greeting:
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY THROUGH WARPED RADICAL LEFT MINDS, WHO ALLOWED 21,000,000 MILLION PEOPLE TO ILLEGALLY ENTER OUR COUNTRY, MANY OF THEM BEING CRIMINALS AND THE MENTALLY INSANE, THROUGH AN OPEN BORDER THAT ONLY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT WOULD APPROVE, AND THROUGH JUDGES WHO ARE ON A MISSION TO KEEP MURDERERS, DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS, GANG MEMBERS, AND RELEASED PRISONERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, IN OUR COUNTRY SO THEY CAN ROB, MURDERER, AND RAPE AGAIN — ALL PROTECTED BY THESE USA HATING JUDGES WHO SUFFER FROM AN IDEOLOGY THAT IS SICK, AND VERY DANGEROUS FOR OUR COUNTRY

As a mathematician, I especially enjoyed the part about "21,000,000 MILLION PEOPLE". Hard to understand how the number of people who entered our country illegally could have been over 2500 times as many people who live on earth today. But it's hard to argue with a fellow who saved 258 million lives during a 100-day period earlier this year (according to his Attorney General).

The references to scum, destroying our country, warped minds, mentally insane, an incompetent president, suffering, sick ideology, and "very dangerous for our country" are perhaps best understood as projection.

I could have sworn he's tweeted that seething cauldron of bile before. I guess eventually it all just merges into one constantly leaking sewage outflow of hate.

I'm still fully convinced he thinks "asylum seekers" means criminally insane people seeking a luxurious American lunatic asylum to live in at the taxpayers expense.

Is this one of those dress colour things? Or have you been primed to hear 'but'? It's more of an 'uh' than an 'or', and it's followed by the 't' of 'to', but there's no initial 'b' there. Even if he had said 'but', in this case it's clearly an error. (And I'm the last person to be an apologist for Trump.)

Politico reported, "President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to redistribute $3 billion in grant money from Harvard to trade schools, opening up yet another chapter in his escalating fight with the university...“We are still waiting for the Foreign Student Lists from Harvard so that we can determine, after a ridiculous expenditure of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, how many radicalized lunatics, troublemakers all, should not be let back into our Country,” Trump wrote Monday...In early May, the president announced he would revoke the university’s tax-exempt status. “It’s what they deserve!” he wrote on social media."
