Will tariffs make America great?

Reports that Boeing, the USA's biggest exporting company, are quietly petitioning the Trump admin to either ease off on tariffs, or give them exceptions. That would mean a huge hole in whatever tariff earnings would apply. China has already returned a pair of 737MAX aircraft that were on order, another is in the process of being returned, and an order of some 50-odd aircraft has been either stalled or cancelled. China says it will replace the units with Airbus A320 models and/or its own C919 aircraft.

...being shut out of one of the world’s fastest-growing markets would be a blow, particularly if Airbus, which builds planes in France, China and the US, is able to continue selling.

“We are not going to continue to build aeroplanes for customers who will not take them,” [Boeing CEO] Ortberg said, adding: “If we see markets closing that’s going to be a big challenge for us.”

Here is a current and in-depth documentary by gamers nexus about computers and the tariffs insanity.
They even talked to multiple CEOs. Quite extensive and good overview about the supply chains and all the problems these tariffs create etc.
It's a very good channel, must watch the video.

WINNING: Apple Ditches Communist China, Moves All U.S. iPhone Production to India by 2026
Thanks to President Trump’s tough on China tariffs, Apple is pulling the plug on its reliance on Communist China, announcing plans to shift all U.S. bound iPhone assembly to India by the end of 2026.
This move will strip China of its $70 billion iPhone cash cow, hitting Beijing where it hurts while boosting jobs in a friendlier nation.
Apple’s decision to produce over 60 million iPhones annually in India is a direct result of Trump’s America First trade policies.
The tech giant, once cozy with China’s regime, is now scrambling to align with MAGA’s vision of breaking free from globalist supply chains.
India’s pro business incentives under Modi make it the perfect partner to support this massive shift, proving Trump’s strategy is reshaping the world economy.
America is winning again, and China’s feeling the heat as Apple’s exodus signals more companies will follow.

So the America First policy is triumphantly bringing back iPhone manufacture from China to <checks notes> India. You're sure it's not Indiana, right? They probably already have tiny screwdrivers in Indiana.

The story would be perfect if Apple was going to move its assembly line to the Indian state of Kerala (Wiki), but I don't know the exact location in India.

ETA: By the way, notice that Apple only "plans to shift all U.S. bound iPhone assembly to India," which makes it sound as if the assembly of iPhones to the rest of the world market will remain in China.

Those tiny screwdrivers have to be imported from China...

ETA. 27% tariff on India anyway. So they will still go up appreciably in price.

it’s likely, unless the rest of the world decides to tariff china as well. which, i’m assuming, was trump’s failed plan

Expect the tariff on smartphones from India to be "adjusted" in due course.

Any seeming connection between occasional fine-tuning of the super-genius tariff system and scrambling to avoid the sticker price going sky high on stuff people will clearly notice is not real. I'm shocked you even think it might be.

Presumably iPhones are currently made in China because that's cheaper than setting up the infrastructure to make them in India. So this will make iPhones more expensive for the US and likely a bit more expensive for everyone else just due to the loss of economy of scale.

Even with the 27% tariff it seems it's cheaper to make them in India rather than the US. But of course the entire tariff scheme will have changed a dozen times over before a single Indian iPhone is made. I wonder what promises of stability Apple and India got, and whether they're worth the paper they aren't written on.

I needed some ICs to repair lithium battery charging faults on portable equipment and most manufacturers use the same chipset for the job. Much the cheapest way to get the two ICs required was to buy a ready-made postage stamp sized circuit board and raid it for the chips I needed.
That's a clever and cheap solution. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me because under our engineering rules that would count as a "reclaimed" part, even if the assembly we're taking it from has never been used. It may be functionally indistinguishable from a brand-new part, but for some of our critical applications it would be disqualified under our rules.

The model of manufacturing that Pres. Trump and others are pushing is a quaint 1970s model that completely ignores the reality of a global infrastructure and global trade. What they're doing has zero chance of bringing manufacturing back to the United States, or of bootstrapping any sort of isolation-friendly industry. It's Trump doing his typical thing of plundering an economy for personal gain and leaving everyone else holding the bag. Only this time it's the world's formerly most prosperous and reliable national economy, not one of the many companies he bankrupted with his ineptitude and bullying.
