Trump's Second Term

I sometimes wonder if Trump thinks there's a thing called a grocery. He doesn't know just what it is, but people tell him he's doing a good job with it.
Trump's reaction to hearing the word grocery makes one wonder if this is a symptom of Alzheimers like not recognizing one's kids.

Big drop on the Dow 20 minutes ago it fell over 400 points in 5 minutes Now on −635.32

What happened?
Powell was interviewed and said interest rates would not be coming down.

Andy_Ross upthread linked to the interview. Seems like there was more to it, a discussion not just the lecture but I watched too many podcasts and my memory is muddled.

He's never had to buy groceries in his entire life, and has never had the slightest interest in what life is like for those who don't live in a similar bubble of privilege. There are probably other words in common usage which he has never encountered.

FIRE also receives support from the National Philanthropic Trust, Jack Dorsey's StartSmall and the Hugh Hefner foundation, organizations that lean left of center. This spectrum of support is exactly what I would expect: principled conservatives and principled liberals both care about freedom of expression.

Source Watch was rated as mostly factual but also strongly left biased by Mediabiasfactcheck. If anything, I would take their words with a dollop or two of skepticism.
Or you could just check their sources yourself as SourceWatch links to them. :oldroll:

I totally agree that this ^ could explain it. But his reaction to the word has been so odd.

From my observations about how members of the last Conservative governments handled Brexit, a lot of it is performative. Many of the most ardent advocates of a hard Brexit were the same politicians who had campaigned for Remain and even wrote articles correctly predicting the impacts of Brexit. Presumably the chance of a better short term political career (or in the case of Truss very short term but with a nice pension) Trumped their qualms due to their knowing it would be disastrous for the country and presumably their longer term reputation.

I have no reason to doubt that similarly power-hungry rightwing* politicians in the US would prioritise anything above short-term personal political advantage.

*I hesitate to call them "conservative" in either side of the Atlantic as they are radicals, but without the good intentions (however misguided) that many radicals have.
This is a poor analogy. Brexit was promoted and opposed both from the left and the right. The then prime minister David Cameron a 'right winger' opposed Brexit. Brexit became policy as the result of a popular vote, after a referendum even those politicians opposed to Brexit then had to accept the expressed will of the people and deliver Brexit to the best of their ability. A policy of Brexit in name only would have been an undemocratic response to the referendum result. Those politicians who previously opposed Brexit were obliged to deliver the policy to the best of their ability. For the same reason the left wing government currently in power will not reverse Brexit, but continue with the policy. Trump was elected on a MAGA policy whilst there doesn't seem to have been a clear manifesto of planned actions, one can argue that much of what he is doing, is what he said he would do, and to an extent democratic politicians have to accept that this was the will of the USA and need to support Trump in delivering the policy in the best way possible. The problem in many cases isn't that the objectives are wrong in themselves, just the way he is going about it.

In contrast the left wing SNP government in Scotland never accepted the outcome of the independence referendum and continued to plan for independence, with the policy of a redo referendum as soon as possible. This distraction in part has led to the poor governance Scotland has had from the left wing SNP government. It is possible with the appearance of Reform further splitting the Unionist vote that the SNP will win the next election with a large majority on a minority vote and take this a pseudo-referendum and yet again focus on independence rather than addressing the decline in education and health.

To be clear this is not arguing the virtues of Brexit, I personally opposed Brexit.

"the long time abused USA is bringing in Billions of Dollars a week from the abusing countries on Tariffs that are already in place."

He continues to just not understand how tariffs work, or his dementia has gotten bad enough that he forgets every time someone explains it to him.
Or he's lying.

I guess this is one of the exciting opportunities for the next generation Elise Stefanik was chirping about!
Another failure by Harvard, how many graduates go down the mines? It isn't producing Americans with the skills America needs like mining and lumber jacking, sweat shopping, field handing.

Or he's lying.
When his fundamental misunderstanding of how tariffs work first became clear back in 2016 I wondered why none of those around him (which at that time still included a few reasonably sane and knowledgeable people) didn't just sit him down and explain it to him. Then the first behind the scenes books came out and it turned out that several people, including the chairmen of the federal reserve, had attempted to do so. The problem is it doesn't go in. If it's something he doesn't want to hear, he just won't hear it.

'Honesty'
'Love'

"Explore the wonderful opportunities of Black Lung, Lung Cancer and Mine Disasters!"

Quite: there are many reasons why my great-grandfather, who was the last coal face worker in my family (official title "hewer"), made damn sure that his 3 sons got out of the mines and that none of us have gone back since. And that was well before the Durham coal fields were closed.

I saw a poll the other day, apparently 80% of Americans think it would be a good thing if more Americans worked in factories, in the same poll 25% of Americans think it would be a good thing if they worked in a factory..

It's like Tories who think too many kids to to university, too many of other people's kids that is.

@realDonaldTrump
Can you believe it? A Judge ruled against us on 530,000 Illegal Migrants (that Joe Biden flew over the Border in his program to transport Illegals into the Country by airplane) saying that they can’t be looked at as a group, but that each case has to be tried individually. Based on the Court System, that would take approximately 100 years. What is going on with our Courts? They are totally OUT OF CONTROL. They seem to hate “TRUMP” so much, that anything goes! We are trying to bring our Country back from the destruction caused by the Democrats and Crooked Joe Biden. I won on a Policy of Common Sense, and what Common Sense do we have when we have to have 530,000 trials? This Radicalized Judge is saying that Sleepy Joe Biden can fly more than half a million Illegals into America, IN ONE DAY, but we have to hold many years of long and tedious trials to fly each and every one of them back home. Where is the JUSTICE here???

It isn't technically lying. Liars try to conceal the truth.

don't care what the truth is.
I'm deliberately avoiding the masking tech because the word is important.
He seems to want everyone to repeat the bs as if that will magically make his bs true.

Will Trump be able to groom a follower for 2028? Important goals will take years more.

They still have a mission in 2028, finish the job:
1 remove every foreigner who has not had at least a green card 10 years.
2 remove every trans woman athlete from every team. Even frisbee golf.

Other stuff like Social Security will be gone by 2028.
He's planning on being President again himself, he won't groom a follow.
Dictators never do, how could they be trusted?

He's in a third category, he believes anything he said is true because he said it just like documents aren't classified if he says they're not and it isn't illegal if he does it. He needs his proclamations echoed back to him, he's a narcissist but also pathologically dependant on the adulation of those around him, disagreement isn't just on the point of dissent, it's an attack on his whole worldview in which he is, by definition, right.
